ZooChat Challenge Great Britain, Ireland, and Crown Dependencies 2024

Reaseheath College Zoo 04/01/2023:
I made a very brief visit today just to get my challenge entries up and running and surprisingly made a lifer but not in amphibian terms.
  1. Fea's Tree Frog Rhacophorus feae
  2. Mexican Leaf Frog Pachymedusa dacnicolor
  3. Oriental fire-bellied Toad Bombina orientalis

Interesting challenge this year, nice to have a vested interest in cold blooded sections for a change!

** struggling to find details for this one online, so taken name/species name as listed on signage.

Seems to be a nice selection of species at Slimbridge!

IUCN list 'Rhacophorus vampyrus' under the name Vampire Flying Frog. There does indeed seem to be a conflict of opinion among academics as to whether this species belongs in the genus Rhacophorus or its own genus Vampyrius. Either way a nice species. Also intersting to note, as far as I can see, it has no entries in Zootierliste in either current or former!

certainly seems that way and if zootierliste is accurate a substantial number off show also!

Colchester Zoo 21/1/2024
1. Trinidad Poison Dart Frog (Mannophryne trinitatis)
2. False Tomato Frog (Dyscophus guineti)

A bit of an unlucky start for me with only 2/5 eligible species but I have the rest of the year to spot them (also it is a good excuse to visit Worlds Apart and the orangutan house) while hopefully adding many more species from other zoos.

I have ammended my list to include the new genus for Fea's Tree Frog, and the correct name of the White-spotted Reed Frog, Chester's label says White-bellied. changed the name of Blue Poison Frog to Dyeing Poison Frog.

Colchester Zoo 21/1/2024
1. Trinidad Poison Dart Frog (Mannophryne trinitatis)
2. False Tomato Frog (Dyscophus guineti)

Banham Zoo 19/2/2024
3. Axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum)

Colchester Zoo 22/2/2024
4. Green and Black Poison Dart Frog (Dendrobates auratus)
5. Yellow and Black Poison Dart Frog (Dendrobates leucomelas)
6. Bony-headed Toad (Ingerophrynus galeatus)

Where are the Strawberry poison dart frogs? I haven't seen them on either of my visits this year

They are in the 2nd tank from the left in the sensation station. I will admit I was under the impression they were off show until I happened to go in there and spotted them with some temporary signage in the corner of the building. I would have guessed they are haven't gone in the Worlds Apart tank because of their small size compared to the other 3 species.

Manchester Museum 29/02/24
14 Variable Harlequin Frog Atelopus varius
15 Magnificent Tree Frog Ranoidea splendida
16 Yellow-banded Poison Frog Dendrobates leucomelas

Also saw three species of frog I have not yet identified, one is a Cruziohyla and the other two look like 'Hyla' species.

Participants in the challenge may be interested to read that the museum now has vivs signed for Golfodulcean Poison Frog and Aquatic Caecilian. I saw neither species. The museum is closed on Mondays.

My plan to visit Liverpool World Museum after my trip to Manchester was thwarted because strike action meant that Liverpool Museum was closed. This visit could have added Fire Salamander and Axolotl to my list.

Might as well take the first shot, with the one single amphibian my local zoo has.

--Banham Zoo (1/1/2024)--
1. Axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum)

And for bonus points, they certainly weren't albino.

--Chester Zoo (5+6/3/2024)--
2. Mexican Leaf Frog (Agalychnis dacnicolor)
3. Imbabura Tree Frog (Boana picturata)
4. Blue Poison Dart Frog (Dendrobates tinctorius)
5. Maranon Poison Frog (Excidobates mysteriosus)
6. White Spotted Reed Frog (Heterixalus alboguttatus)
7. Trinidad Stream Frog (Mannophryne trinitatis)
8. Golden Mantella (Mantella aurantiaca)
9. Strawberry Poison Frog (Oophaga pumilio)
10. Golden Poison Frog (Phyllobates terribilis)
11. Titicaca Water Frog (Telmatobius culeus)
12. Fea's Flying Treefrog (Rhacophorus feae)
