ZooParc de Beauval Zooparc de Beauval news 2024

A little time after the death of her companion EOS, the female Fishing Cat AYUSHI is either dead or placed off-show (she was geriatric with ca. 15 years of age).
So Fishing Cats are no longer displayed in Beauval for now.

The 2 Smooth-fronted Caimans Paleosuchus trigonatus (originally in the main Vivarium and in the Gorilla house) have been transferred in the former enclosure of the young Malayan False Gharials in the Dome.
Otherwise, the Douc Langur enclosure is being refurbished.

Beauval newsletter has reported various births for early winter 2023-2024 : 3 Axis Deer, 2 Giant Asian Pond Turtles, 1 Nyala, 1 Lesser Kudu, 1 Somali Wild Ass, 3 Southern Three-banded Armadillos and 1 Red-flanked Lorikeet Hypocharmosyna placentis.

Otherwise, a conference of the director of the Help Congo conservation program is scheduled for April.

A few notes from Beauval, where I went yesterday :
  • the Andean Condor aviary has been emptied for works ;
  • there's signage about Yellow Anaconda (probably a juvenile individual, not seen and maybe not present yet...) in the small snake terrariums of the Gorilla house ;
  • one outdoor enclosure for Marmosets and other Neotropical primates has been demolished, next to the eatery "Les Orangs-Outans".

No worries, thanks for letting me know. How are they doing there? Are they having the same issues other zoos in the west have had with them?

Their acclimatization wasn't really easy.
There has been 3 births, but 2 of the juveniles died later. One of the adult females died last year.
The group remains with one male, 2 or 3 adult females and one teenager.
I don't know what will happen in the future with them.

The former Coati hut has been dismantled, amidst works in their old enclosure, empty since late 2023.
The future of this enclosure is unclear as the direction hasn't announced nothing about that until now. It may become an expansion of the nearby Asian Small-clawed Otter enclosure.

Seen on Howtank forum/chat :
  • a new Caribbean Manatee is born in early 2024 (!), it's probably a little boy ;
  • a new aviary is being rebuilt over the place of a former outdoor primate aviary near the Orang-Utan island. It seems higher than the former one, and will likely house primates again (much probably Marmosets, Tamarins or other small species) ;
  • there are small refurbishment works in other places of the zoo (Northern Raccoons' enclosure...).

A good idea would be to enlarge the otters' enclosure and mix them with binturongs, it would be a new species !

The director of Beauval Mr. Rodolphe Delord is just back from China, where he discussed about panda conservation and the extension of the leasing of the pair of pandas present in Beauval since 2012.
Such news are interesting to notice, especially when confronted with the situation in other Western countries that gave up panda husbandry (or at very best, are pending for any new project about this species).
The article emphasises also on special celebrations (without more precisions) in link with the 60th anniversary of the normalization of the diplomatic relations between France and Popular Republic of China, that was initiated by Charles de Gaulle and Mao Zedong.
