West Midland Safari and Leisure Park West Midland Safari Park 2024

Aren’t the two female elephant’s way past breeding age and so it’s more of a retirement home rather than breeding with both of them!
Well Pairi Daiza was looking for a new home for them where they will be living in a new facility and meeting 2 more elephants. They will need to settle in before any of that can happen

I'm pretty sure that is correct, there is probably no chance of them producing first calves at this age and it seems to be more a marriage of convenience with Pairi Daiza being able to unite their cows with their own species and WMSP getting female companionship for Five. I think the only pitter patter of elephant feet will be coming from calves born to Five for now, that the two new cows will be able to assist the raising of while they enjoy their retirement home.

Yes indeed and it's nice there'll be 4 elephants together in the exhibit but for now Suzy and Gitana will need to settle in to the new home once they arrived. Question is how long will those 2 girls be in Quarantine for ?

On my recent visit a few days ago, a keeper informed me that the elephants, Suzy and Gutana, are coming to live at WMSP not to breed but rather so they can live with other members of their species for their remaining years. Due to African Elephants being a herd animal, they are coming from Pairi Daiza Zoo so that they can have a better life together in a larger herd. Coco came to WMSP to breed with Five initially but I understand that breeding is on hold (for now). If a collection needs him more, he will move on. Currently there is no confirmed date as to when the two females will arrive.

If anyone has heard differently, please feel free correct me :D.

Thought so on Suzy and Gitana, hopefully this will be very beneficial for both sides. Were you told the reason why breeding between Five and Coco is on hold?

Pregnancy hormones can be disrputive during introductions so that may be reason why they're electing to hold off breeding with Five for now.

In saying that, it's really vital Five is able to breed asap (considering she last conceived back in 2014).

Ah I hope they breed. Coco only came to WMSP since August

Went to West Midlands Safari Park with my sister, uncle and his wife due to them coming down from Denmark for the weekend yesterday. So treated them all by taking them to there.

All of them enjoyed the day out, but were very shocked at how expensive entry has gone up to (£32 per adult for entry alone).

But also noticed a few changes in the order of where animals have been kept in the Drive Through.
  • Plains Zebra, Ostriches, Ankole Cattle are now kept in what used to part of the Asia Lowlands. (It looks like it's been changed to be part of the Africa area now)
  • Fellow Deer are now in the Wild Asia area.
  • A new species of deer in where the Cheetah used to be (had no idea what species they were sadly)
  • Pete's Deer and an Asian buffalo species (their name always eludes me) have been moved with the Bactrian Camels in The Borderlands
All in all though, a fantastic day out. Was rather foggy at first, but sun came out by the time we had entered the African Lions. Was able to catch Lestari playing with Nakal (The male and her father), so relived to see that them mixing the tiger family together again went well.

But didn't see any sign of the new Southern Rhino baby or her mother, so assuming they're being kept apart for the time being until the weather warms up for her.
