North American Malayan Tapir Population

Why is the tapir population so low in NA. Are they hard to keep? Is there any Canadian zoo that want to house them again, like Toronto or Parc Safari? It would be cool.

In general the AZA prefers its zoos to keep Baird's tapirs, because the EAZA has a healthy population of Malayan tapirs (but not Baird's). As a result, if an American zoo has room for only one species it's encouraged to go Baird's over Malayan. Basically they want to leave Malayan tapirs to the Europeans.

It's Calgary, and the transfer couldn't come soon enough. Their male, Tanuk, is amongst the more genetically valuable males in North America, and he's on the older side. They'll be lucky to get two, maybe three offspring from the pair, assuming everything goes as well as possible.

@Robyn Graham Is there any evidence of the calf being a girl to support your claim?

The zoo named the girl Munah.

Our Malayan tapir calf has finally received her name! We are pleased to introduce Munah, meaning “favored by destiny”. ✨

At two weeks old, Munah is getting the zoomies often and continuing to bond with mom, Ubi. We also expect her to start showing interest in water play behind the scenes, which will translate to her excellent swimming skills later in life.
Munah will start to sample small amounts of lettuce, leaves, and potentially some softer fruits in the near future, too!

Stay tuned for more Munah updates!
