Chester Zoo Chester Zoo Discussion and Questions 2024

I recently donated a number of fish to Chester: Clown Loaches, Lake Kutubu Rainbows, Tiger Barbs, Denison's Barbs, Rohan's Barbs, Filament Barbs, and Pearl Gouramis. Some of these should by now be on display in Monsoon Forest and the Elephant House, although as they're joining large shoals you'll not be able to spot them, except for the Loaches which being subadults are much smaller than the others in that group.

I also accidentally sent them and have now retrived a single Pelvicachromis pulcher Kribensis, so when the 2024 inventory comes out next year and you're wondering what that's all about you'll know who to blame.

Did you breed them all yourself?

Only the Krib! The rest were fish I'd been asked to rehome and for which I had no room (I have twenty-five tanks on the go and so I often get asked to take on other people's fish). I did have space for the Clown Loaches but as I'm fifty and Clowns have a life expectancy of thirty it would have been irresponsible of me to try to take them on.

Mind you I have bred some interesting stuff. So far this year I have Lake Wapoga Rainbowfish and Butterfly Goodeid fry on the go, and I've recently sourced some F2 Altum Angels as the basis for a breeding project.

Has the latest Bornean Orangutan baby been sexed and named yet? Someone mentioned a "Myrtle" on social media which is a name I've not heard before

Thanks Jennings. You sound as if you have a very busy life.

Chester Zoo website now has 2023 animal inevntories, unusually early this year. Unfortunately they still have not uploaded the inventories for 2019.

First breedings at Chester for 2023 (excluding fish and invertebrates) are

79 Imbabura Tree Frog
1 Painted River Terrapin
9 Panther Chameleon
7 Argentine Ruddy Duck
1.0.4 Puna Ibis
0.2 Brahminy Starling
0.1.1 Common Magpie Robin
3.2.7 Tricoloured Parrot Finch
4 White-headed Munia

One import which caught my eye was European Glowworm.

The inventories can be found in the Corporate Information section, underneath the annual reports.

Has anyone actually seen the brahminy starlings? They've been a no show for me everytime since the zoo got them, surely they can't be huddled up all the time.

You don't seriously expect them to add the 2019 report if it wasn't add at the time, because they won't be doing it and zoochat will be wondering forever what happened that year.

Giraffe house was closed for the obvious reason, Orla has given birth. Think this maybe calf number 7 for her?

Out of curiosity, Orla has had roughly 7 calves at least 5 of which are fathered by Meru, will the stud book suspend breeding from her with Meru for now or continue as she is 16 this year

I've just received an email from the zoo informing members that the snow leopard preview period has been extended but members will have to book their day of visiting online as the zoo has been too busy recently and is expected to get even more so over the Easter holidays. I'm lucky that my Easter break for uni starts before the schools do so I'll have to get a visit in beforehand.
