One must have died then recently, last time I was there I thought I saw 3.There are only two lesser flamingos left. They are among the oldest animals in Planckendael, if not the oldest.
Too bad... I found them the most attractive flamingo species around. I suppose this underlines or confirms my suspicions that maintaining the lassers at Planckendael was never a success (and the exclosure sub par / non optimal for breeding).
There have been at most 3 lesser left for years now, around 2016-2017 they still had a fourth if I remember the year correctly.
I assume the fact that the American flamingo’s actually breed in Planckendael is the most likely reason they want to keep them there for now. Breeding has happened in Antwerp, but only 4 chicks have been produced since they moved into the new exhibit (2016 I think). They probably want to increase the group a bit before sending them back, as that might give them more incentive to breed in Antwerp as well.
