Potawatomi Zoo Potawatomi Zoo News

Visited the zoo yesterday and attended the tamandua animal ambassador yesterday, which ended up being the first one they've ever done. It was a lot of fun and they said they may do it again in the future!

The majority of the reptile enclosures in The Learning Center are empty, some with paper blocking the glass and some with a sign saying that a new species will be coming soon. A white-throated monitor is also back on exhibit in the building.

In The Learning Center, the white throated monitor has been replaced by Burmese star tortoises, black tree monitor exhibit has been replaced by a frilled lizard, and a snake exhibit (can’t remember the species) has been replaced by the black tree monitors. Several of the terrariums remain empty and some have construction taking place.

I got my first good look at the Andean bear exhibit and it looks quite nice. I could tell they got some inspiration from Nashville Zoo’s exhibit (I will be posting photos of the exhibit and the neighboring cafe in the gallery).

A Sichuan takin was born shortly after noon today! I was lucky to be able to witness the calf making its first steps. The calf will be examined by keepers tomorrow.

The Takin kid is a boy.
Potawatomi Zoo on Instagram: "Great news! Our Sichuan takin kid is a boy! Vet and animal care staff checked him over and weighed him (he's a healthy 23 pounds). We haven't decided on a name yet, but we'll be sure to let you know when we do! Thanks to Zookeeper Lauren for sharing some of these adorable behind-the-scenes snaps of the kid. #pzoolife #zoolife #wildlife #aza #zoo #takin #sichuantakin #zoobaby #zooborns"

Is the fennec fox exhibit still boarded up?

Some observations I made while visiting today:

A common genet can now be seen in an exhibit across from the colobus monkeys.

The former zoo restaurant between zoo farm and Africa has reopened as a hot and cold drink "cafe".

Poison dart frogs have moved in with the Amazon tree boa in the Learning Center.

Also in the Learning Center, a carrot-tail viper gecko has been moved to what was formerly a tiger salamander exhibit.

That the one by the tree shrews? Just got back, trying to put a species list together. I have everything but an unsigned large snake by the fennec foxes (tv was dark), an unsigned snake by the shrews, and an unsigned frog in the exhibit signed for prehensile-tailed skinks.
