Animal Species You Have Seen Both in the Wild and in Captivity

My recent trip to Belize brought a number of exciting wild sightings. Species marked with an asterisk (*) are ones which the only captive sighting is at the Belize Zoo, while species marked with a question mark (?) are ones that I'm not sure if this was my first wild sighting of (mainly birds with wide ranges). I might be missing one or two, but I think this list is mostly complete.

Mammals
  • White-Nosed Coati
  • Kinkajou
  • Jaguarundi*
  • Central American Spider Monkey
  • Yucatan Black Howler Monkey*
Birds
  • Ornate Hawk Eagle*
  • Black Vulture?
  • Osprey?
  • Lesser Scaup?
  • Jabiru Stork*
  • Aplomado Falcon
  • Great Curassow*
  • Blue-Gray Tanager
  • Western Cattle Egret
  • Boat-Billed Heron
  • Snowy Egret
  • Yellow-Crowned Night Heron
  • Black-Crowned Night Heron
  • Roseate Spoonbill
  • Keel-Billed Toucan
  • Yellow-Headed Parrot
  • White-Fronted Parrot*
  • Red-Lored Parrot*
  • Mottled Owl*
  • Anhinga
Herps
  • Cane Toad (all captive sightings were before I started keeping track of amphibians)
  • Morelet's Crocodile
  • Green Iguana
  • Brown Anole
  • Meso-American Slider*
I also saw in the wild some close relatives of species I've seen in zoos, such as the Central American agouti (instead of the red-rumped agouti) or the russet-naped wood rail (instead of the giant wood rail), which were cool to see nonetheless. Perhaps the only disappointing no-show on the trip was that I didn't see any wild peccaries, along with a few species that I had an extremely low chance of seeing in the wild to begin with.
How lucky you got to see a jaguarundi. I've never seen one in the wild or captivity. Despite visiting Costa Rica and the Yucatan I also haven't seen a wild parrot. I have seen keel-billed toucans in both places and heard howler monkeys in Mexico but didn't see them. I've also seen coatis in both places but wasn't able to get a photo. I saw a kinkajou my last night in Costa Rica. I can also add to my list firemouth and what I'm pretty sure we're Jack Dempsey cichlids in the Yucatan. That is if seeing animals in the pet trade counts as in captivity.

Despite visiting Costa Rica and the Yucatan I also haven't seen a wild parrot.
I definitely saw my fair share of parrots, but unfortunately they were almost always impossible to photograph well. Most of the time it was two-second sightings of a loud flock flying overhead, and occasionally saw an animal in the tree. Perhaps the best view of a parrot I got was actually of the endangered yellow-headed parrot, as one flew into a tree right near me, however it was right around sunset, so the glare didn't allow me to get a good photo.
-Central American Agouti
What zoo did you see this guys in, I'm assuming it was outside the US?
-Lesson's Motmot
Now it's my time to be jealous! Motmots top the list of Belizean birds I was hoping to see, but ended up not seeing.
-Rosy-faced Lovebird
Based on the lack of other African birds on your list, I take it there's an introduced or invasive population in Florida that you saw?

ZooAve in San Jose, Costa Rica.

I've also seen three other species of motmots, but Lesson's is the only ones I've seen in captivity. Rufous is my favorite, hence my new profile pic.

Yes to introduced, but no to Florida. It's actually in Arizona.

That's an impressive list. The only one I've seen on that list in the wild and captivity is a California sea lion. Where did you see that?

Has anyone here ever seen a snow leopard or giant panda in the wild and captivity? THAT would be impressive.

My experience with all of the parrot species I've seen in the wild is that parrots are very easy to see, but very difficult to see well. They almost always appear just as flyover flocks.

That's my experience with toucans. Mostly I've just seen them fly over and usually from a bus!

Perhaps I'm a bit lucky to have gotten views of all the wild toucan species I've seen then! Although heard only Fiery-billed Aracari still haunts me.
