The Zoo is hoping to begin construction on “Cougar Crossing” soon. The only thing standing in the way? Several graves from a cemetery that once stood where the Zoo is today.

On December 12th, it was reported that the zoo is working with archeologists from the University of Alabama to relocate 12-15 bodies after they received approval from the Alabama Historical Commission. The facility will have a service for the deceased in the future before being reinterred, as well as signage in the new Cougar Crossing exhibit detailing the history of the land.

On December 13th, it was reported that the zoo's (1.0) bobcat named Bob passed away in November at age 19 (though bobcats will return when Cougar Crossing opens). It was also reported that the zoo is working on restoring the Protective Carousel which will be completed in early 2024.

In time for the opening of Cougar Crossing (which is scheduled to open on March 19th), the zoo welcomed a five-month old female cougar who was found as an orphan by the Montana FWP.

At the time this post was written, the unnamed cub is currently settling into her new home at Birmingham, and is expected to make her public debut with the opening of the new exhibit.
