We finally got an update on YouTube of Elephant Trek! All I can say is WOW! This is going to be an amazing exhibit!!! It looks like they still have quite a bit of work to do, specifically in the otter / siamang area in Elephant Trek. Let's hope they can get in done in the next couple months but if I had to guess, it will be late summer before Elephant Trek opens. I hope I am wrong but its looking great!
This looks impressive. It seems Cincinnati has been going a bit under the radar with these improvements and is slowly becoming one of the countries must visit zoos.

Another Elephant Trek update was posted to YouTube two days ago:

Of note:
  • "We are looking to complete Yard 2 by June so we can get Sabu back."
  • Once Yard 2 is complete, they will shift their focus to Yard 3 to be completed in July.
  • Once Yard 3 is complete, they will continue to work on siamang, otter, and hornbill area.
  • Once siamang, otter and hornbill area is done, they'll finish the entryway.
  • "We'll be looking good for the fall." This is the latest I've heard for the opening so far.

The zoo shared a post on twitter/x today about the new blue duikers. The caption on the post says they will share an exhibit with the brown mountain tortoises that are on exhibit in the former stork/pelican exhibit.
So what'll go in the former gibbon island in Jungle Trails then?

Why blue duiker and not an Asian muntjac or something?

Anyway, I do find the whole elephant project quite enticing.

When the duiker were first announced, this is immediately where I expected them to end up. It should really be a nice exhibit space for them.

So what'll go in the former gibbon island in Jungle Trails then?

Whatever it is, it’s getting its own brand new off-exhibit holding. Shocked it’s not the duiker.
I visited in February, and judging from the size of the building and the netting support structures that have gone up, I expect it to be a primate. Most of the outdoor exhibits in Jungle Trails do not have direct access to indoor holding, so the animals have to be physically moved on and off exhibit. This would make for much better setup for any of the primates that currently rotate in and out of these exhibits, and it would certainly be a better home for either the remaining Mueller’s gibbon or the buff-cheeked gibbons from Gibbon Islands.

Why blue duiker and not an Asian muntjac or something?
Because the blue duiker population has rapidly expanded in the past couple of years and new holders are desperately needed. They fit well into the general tropical rainforest theme of Jungle Trails. In recent years, with the mixing in of South American fauna as well, the geographic theming of the complex has been broken already. I don’t see the harm in the mix when the exhibit space works well for both species and allows them both to continue to be on exhibit.

Made a visit to the zoo and noticed a flock of lesser flamingo was added to the flock of greater flamingo in Rhino Reserve

The zoo received a flock of ten Lesser Flamingos last year. During the warmer months they are housed in the flamingo habitat in Africa with the Greater Flamingos used as ambassador animals. During the winter all the flamingos are moved to Rhino Reserve as there is not facilities adequate to house them in Africa hence you spotted them in the veldt.

Another example of the amazing partnership the zoo has with Cincinnati Children's Hospital. Female gorilla Gladys broke her humerus while playing with Elle and Mona and was taken to the hospital for treatment. A cast was 3D printed for and she seems to be doing fine now although, according to a volunteer, quite annoyed with her cast. Cincinnati Zoo's Gladys the gorilla sustains broken arm in fight

A new update on Elephant Trek was shared a couple days ago. Looks like they are making great progress! I can't wait to see the finished product. I love the stream running through the main yard. If you have never been to the Cincinnati Zoo, this is going to be a massive upgrade for the elephants. Very overdue but it looks like they are taking into account every little detail for the new exhibit. I have a feeling it will become one of the best elephant exhibits in the US when complete. On top of elephants it will also have exhibits for clawed otters, siamangs and hornbill. I can't wait for it to be done later this year!

On May 1st, the zoo announced their 2024 Spring Babies list, of which the unannounced births/details include:

- The little blue penguin hatched in September 2023 was named Julep, the penguins hatched in late December 2023 were named Benedict and Salisbury Steak, and the penguin hatched in February 2024 was named Brisket.
- Various reptile and invertebrate births for the following species: Pascagoula map turtle, Aruba Island rattlesnake, rhinoceros viper, and brown anole (in the Reptile House), timber rattlesnake and cottonmouth (in Manatee Springs), and giant spiny leaf insect, dead leaf mantis, and peppered cockroach (in the World of the Insect).

As stated in the post, Juno was moved back to the Animal Ambassador Center in the Children's Zoo area after 24 hours.

On May 4th, the zoo confirmed that Juno (Linne's two-toed sloth) is actually a male, not female as previously stated.
