Native Amphibians in Australian Zoos

Around 40 native Australian frogs out of the approximately 250 extant species can be found in Zoos, conservation facilities and private holdings throughout the country. This list is not comprehensive and contributions of missing data would be appreciated. This list will use Litoria/Cyclorana names rather than Litoria/Ranoidea, as the Australian Museum still uses these names.

Note that some of this data is fairly old (since 2020), especially for less visited and smaller zoos, so it might not be up to date, I’ll list any amendments as a reply

Great list and thank you for taking the time to put this together. The Australian Museum has Magnificent and Green Tree Frogs and possibly other species, off display.

Here's two from my visits that may still be present.
Cairns Aquarium (August 2022): Stony-Creek Frog
Hartley's Crocodile Adventures (August 2022): White-Lipped Tree-Frog

Then there are the ones I haven't visited myself but it may be possible these are present if anyone can confirm.
Australian Reptile Park: Giant Barred-Frog
Sydney Zoo: Green Tree-Frog
Taronga Zoo: Green Tree-Frog (Taronga Institute of Learning)

Cairns Aquarium have Litoria wilcoxi a closely related species to the true Stony Creek Frog, Litoria lesueurii.

I meant to put down Green Tree Frog for Sydney Zoo not Sydney Aquarium oops.

I’m not going to put the Barred Frog in there just yet as I had a report from a few weeks ago that did not mention this species, it is probably still there though, I will do more research.

I’ll do an update soon I’ve found quite a few new holders, just waiting on some information about if Taronga still have Red-crowned Toadlets

Nice work @Yoshistar888 - our native frogs are just the best! Australia's only frog zoo - the Frogarium in northern NSW still hasn't revealed if they are reopening at a new location but they had 23 species including a breeding population of Giant Barred Frogs. It's worth keeping an eye if they open again (I know I won't miss the opportunity to visit if they reopen!). I have been keeping track of amphibians for years, so here are some additions to add I am aware of from social media in the recent years, recent correspondences with zoos or visits. Apologies if some have already been listed. Not sure if some of these holdings are on or off-show:

Red-eyed Tree Frog:
Adelaide Zoo (in Envirodome), Byron Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.

Green and Golden Bell Frog: Byron Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, SEALIFE Sunshine Coast, Territory Wildlife Park, Taronga (?)

Southern Bell Frog: Ballarat Wildlife Park, Cleland, Taronga (?)

Magnificent Tree-Frog: Dreamworld (new display last year), Caversham, Symbio Wildlife Park, Perth Zoo, WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo

Green Tree Frog: Australian Walkabout Sanctuary, Snakes Downunder, Walkabout Creek Wildlife Centre, Gumbuya Park, Moonlit Sanctuary, Cleland Wildlife Park, Wildlife HQ

Cave-dwelling Frog: they are at Caversham but I am not sure if they are on-show. This species was kept in the Rockhampton Botanic Gardens Visitor Centre in 2014 according to the zoo – not sure on their status. Probably long gone.

Southern Brown Tree Frog: Cleland Wildlife Park

White-lipped Tree Frog: Currumbin (off-show), Snakes Downunder, Walkabout Creek Wildlife Centre, Perth Zoo, Rockhampton (still?)

Eastern Dwarf Frog: Currumbin (off-show). I haven’t seen dwarf frogs at SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast in years.

Striped Rocket Frog: seen in pet trade.

Great Barred Frog: on-show Walkabout Creek in 2020. No longer at the zoo.

I believe Dubbo might have some frogs off-show for education purposes. Might be worth checking with them. Worth also checking Ranger Red Zoo. Perth Zoo rings a bell for a few commoner species in the wetlands section. I think Tidbinbilla has a few bell frogs as well.

I had Perth listed for White-lipped, Green Tree and Magnificent but I have no idea why they’re not already on the list. I haven’t been contacting zoos directly, I get very nervous about that sort of thing.
If Moonlit have Green Tree Frog they’re not on display.

Thanks for all the data! I’ll use this for the next update coming soon.

Others may correct me if this is incorrect, but I believe Taronga has both Northern and Southern Corroboree Frogs (and on-display, too). The Northerns are in the newer display near the koala encounters area and the Southerns are in the original area outside the reptile house. Not sure what will happen to this once Serpentaria is demolished, but there's a popular species and Taronga has done a lot of work for their conservation.

They are on the list at the top of the thread, the reply you are linking was an update adding some holdings that I had missed. Thanks anyway

Update

A recent social media post from Symbio Wildlife Park has confirmed that their Stuttering Frogs are the Southern species. It is probably safe to assume that all Stuttering Frogs in captivity are balbus, but will wait when/if confirmation from the Australian Reptile Park comes.
