For a month now, maybe more, the camels have been separated. Initially, I presumed this was so the ribby looking one could get fed more, but they both seem to be in good condition now and yet they're still separated. Anyone know why?

Also, something was going on this morning, with a trailer being towed in the giraffe enclosure (normal livestock trailer, not something that would carry a giraffe). Didn't have the time to ask what was happening, so asking on here.
I believe there was some concern over the health of the male camel, Genghis. He had lost some weight and after inspection by specialist dentists, no problem with teeth. The separation is to make sure he is getting enough food.
As for giraffes, is it possible that either Nuru is leaving or after the death of Maggie, another giraffe is arriving

Thanks.

I was thinking it was more likely to do with the ostriches, given the size of the trailer, but it is also possible that nothing interesting was happening and that they were just moving equipment.

There was no trailer in the giraffe paddock this afternoon; just two giraffes and three ostriches seen.

A late report from April 12th:
  • The Zoos previous Sengi passed away due to old age and a new individual coming soon.
  • The male Ostrich is heading to Whipsnade next couple of weeks to join their flock.
  • The lion cubs are doing well and should be on show ~2 weeks
  • The Tiger cubs will sadly be leaving in the next months for their own breeding programs
  • A group of Penguins have gone to Marvell to join their flock.
  • The baby Gorillas will be named Venus ( or Jupiter depending on gender) and Juno.
  • The Malagasy Giant Rat moved from their mixed enclosure to new one and a male has joined her.
  • Meet The Neighbours Aviary now has the follow new birds: Madagascar crested ibis, Violaceous Turaco and White crowned robin chat.
Please keep in mind that this is from a couple of weeks ago.

I did ask this question when I visited the London and apparently there is no set decision currently and that for now the renaming giraffe shall stay for each overs company. I would imagine this is most likely due to the amount of time they have lived together.

I assume they will be getting the sengi from Chester?

Brilliant to hear that the zoo has been able to acquire a new sengi - as mentioned upthread, this was the plan once the last individual passed away, but the zoo feared that there weren't any available and it may not be possible. Thankfully, this was not the case.

Nice to know the names for the gorilla babies, and they sound great, and the rough date for the lion cubs going onshow. May I ask where you got this information from?

Also worth noting (not a criticism of your post, just so that other members are aware) that the MtN birds are not new and have been there for close to a year now, with all three being present at least since my visit last August.

My mistake, I haven’t visited the Zoo in quite some time so I thought I would add this, just in case it is new :p.

I asked both a keeper and volunteer whom were watching the Gorillas. They haven’t yet decided which baby will be named which but currently these are the favoured names.
I quite like these names if this choice isn't overridden by others. Makes a change from the usual African-sounding ones used these days, though 'Gernot' was decidedly different too.

I’m so sad that Priscilla (Sengi) has passed away, she was mine and my partners favourite animal at the zoo! We’d watch her for ages as people walk past (distracted by sloths) and the few that stopped to see what we were looking at seemed puzzled as to why we were paying so much attention to “mouse”.

RIP

hi. seen the post on april 12th. do we have any update on tiger cubs going and lion cubs being on show. cheers

What op did he have? What is the long term plans for the tigers .. just to live out their days together

As mentioned earlier in this thread;
Asim was swiftly operated on, and a blockage – caused by a piece of bone – was found in his intestines. Thankfully we were able to remove all of the bone during the procedure, and Asim was returned to Tiger Territory to recover from his surgery.

Intestinal surgery is a serious and very delicate procedure, and recovery can be slow. We’re still keeping a close eye on Asim to make sure he’s recovering as he should be.

Thanks to the quick responses of our big cat team, who immediately recognised the severity of Asim’s symptoms, we were able to intervene quickly and save his life – something we are all so grateful for."
