Cities without a major Zoo?

Here in America, the ones I can think of most off the top of my head are Austin and Las Vegas. For the UK (I've never been there, so I'm just guessing based on what I've seen online), neither Liverpool nor Manchester have a city zoo but Chester Zoo is the de facto city zoo for both (once again, I'm just making an educated guess, so Brits feel free to correct me if I got this completely wrong.) Any other big cities without a quality zoo?

Major cities without zoos in the US I can think of without zoos (or sparse zoos):
- Las Vegas, Nevada
- Charlotte, North Carolina
- Eugene, Oregon
- Cheyenne, Wyoming
- Hartford, Connecticut
- Maui, Hawaii
- Spokane, Washington
- Lexington, Kentucky
- Fort Lauderdale, Florida
- Worcester, Massachusetts
- Austin, Texas
- Long Beach, California

Major cities without zoos in the UK I can think of without zoos:
- Cardiff
- Manchester
- Leeds
- Sheffield
- Newcastle
- Glasgow

I will also say that Ottawa, the capital city of Canada is definitely one of the most notable cities in the world without a zoo.

There are many cities in Europe without a zoo (within their city limits and which are bigger then just a farmyard with a few exotics). To name a few:

AUSTRIA:
Graz

BELGIUM;
Brussels
Gent

FRANCE:
Marseille
Nantes
Nice
Strasbourg

GERMANY:
Bielefeld
Bonn
Bremen
Essen (Grugapark ?)
Mannheim
Wiesbaden

ITALY:
Bari
Bologna
Catania
Florence
Messina
Milan
Palermo
Torino
Venice (excused because of obvious reasons)
Verona
-I did not count Genua because of their huge Aquarium with Mammals and Birds, but in fact the city would also fit here)

NETHERLANDS:
Den Haag
Groningen
Utrecht

NORWAY:
Bergen
Oslo

PORTUGAL:
Porto (Zoo Santo Inacio in Avintes, that does not belong to Porto afaik)

SPAIN:
Zaragoza
Bilbao
Malaga (except you count marine parks)
and a few smaller cities like Oviedo or Gijon

SWEDEN:
Goeteborg

TURKEY:
Istanbul (Faruk Yalcin Zoo in Darica/Kocaeli, that does not belong to Istanbul afaik)

Feel free to continue...

We have twin towns Pardubice and Hradec Kralove (each almost 100k). Dvur Kralove safari partially serves them but it´s 50 km away.

TURKEY:
Istanbul (Faruk Yalcin Zoo in Darica/Kocaeli, that does not belong to Istanbul afaik)
FYZ in fact isn’t in Istanbul city. In fact it is not even in the Istanbul province but in Kocaeli/Gebze province.

Istanbul technically had a zoo in the Gülhane Park next to the Archeology Museum in Istanbul. However from what I heard it was not a properly managed zoo and was rightfully shut down in 2001.

Unless you are the type of player that pulls a no true Scotsman (and no, a bad zoo is still a zoo), there are zoos and aquarium in the istanbul city and province limits. Except they would cause second hand embarrassment to anyone who has an idea how zoos should function. That and most of them are in Asia Minor so I guess they wouldn’t count as in Europe.

Edit: Ankara also doesn’t have a major zoo.

Thank you for the great list @zoomaniac ! The sad truth for me is that almost all the cities that you mentioned have a decent zoo in a close proximity. Oslo pick the shortest stick out of them all. The citizens of the only other capital on the list Brussels have access to the two of the best zoos in Europe in short trip by train and are an hour away from the Zoo Giant Pairi Daiza.

AUSTRIA:
Graz - Turtle Island - probably the Biggest collection of Testudines in the World

BELGIUM;
Brussels - Plankendael
Gent - Antwerp

FRANCE:
Marseille - Parc Zoologique de Barben
Nantes - Planète Sauvage
Nice - Jardin Animalier de Monaco
Strasbourg - looks like the Zoo de L'orangerie was closed

GERMANY: - all the German cities, but Bremen probably are located in a heavy zoo areas.
Bielefeld -
Bonn
Bremen
Essen (Grugapark ?)
Mannheim
Wiesbaden

ITALY:
Bari - Zoosafari Fasanolandia
Bologna - Safari Ravenna ?
Catania - not many zoos in Sicilia
Florence - Giardino Zoologico di Pistoia
Messina - not many zoos in Sicilia
Milan - Parco Faunistico Le Cornelle is next to one of the Milan's Airports Bergamo, Parco Faunistico La Torbiera, Pombia Safari Park, Oasi di Sant'Alessio
Palermo - Bioparco di Sicilia Carini
Torino - Zoom Torino
Venice (excused because of obvious reasons)
Verona - Parco Natura Viva
-I did not count Genua because of their huge Aquarium with Mammals and Birds, but in fact the city would also fit here)

NETHERLANDS - same as in Germany, Dutch people hardly can complain :)
Den Haag - Rotterdam
Groningen -
Utrecht - DierenPark Amersfoort

NORWAY:
Bergen - at least Aquarium
Oslo

PORTUGAL:
Porto (Zoo Santo Inacio in Avintes, that does not belong to Porto afaik)

SPAIN:
Zaragoza - only Aquarium
Bilbao - Cabarceno Park
Malaga (except you count marine parks) - Bioparc Fuengirola
and a few smaller cities like Oviedo or Gijon

SWEDEN:
Goeteborg - Nordens Ark, Båros

TURKEY:
Istanbul (Faruk Yalcin Zoo in Darica/Kocaeli, that does not belong to Istanbul afaik)

@twilighter and @PossumRoach: Yes, but the Headline of this thread is: CITIES without a MAJOR zoo. So - as far as I can see - my list is correct...;)

I think it might be important to define what @HTZ means by a "major city", since some of these I definitely would not classify as such.

I would defentivily call the Heimattierpark Olderdissen in Bielefeld a Zoo. It is larger then some smaller zoos. It only has native species, but still some larger species like brownbears, euopean bisons, boar, deer, birds of pray, water birds, lynx, Chamois and ibex.

And you should also not put it on the list, since Bielefeld does infact still not exist >:(

Also Enschede in the netherlands, also has no Zoo
