Monumental new book on Asian Rhinos has been published - The Rhinoceros of South Asia ! The author LC Rookmaaker is famous with another great publication The Rhinoceros in Captivity.

The rhinoceros is an iconic animal. Three species once inhabited South Asia, two of which disappeared over a century ago. This survey aims to reconstruct the historical distribution of these large mammals resulting in new maps showing the extent of their occurrences. Thousands of sources varied in time and nature are used to study the interactions between man and rhinoceros. The text is supported by over 700 illustrations and 38 maps showing the importance of the rhinoceros in the scientific and cultural fabric of Asia and beyond.

I already went through the Sumatran Rhino and Javan Rhino chapters and highly recommend this read. There are interesting facts regarding those species in captivity as well.
 
A very interesting book!

Clearly, the Indian Rhino found a suitable habitat in large areas of north and west India. Like many large animals, it currently exists in reserves which are continuously protected from poaching and well managed. However the habitat suitable for it extends much further, also to reserves in dryer and more southern regions of India.

I wonder if it is realistic to reintroduce groups of Indian Rhinos to Corbett, Ranthambore, Pench and Kanha National Parks? They would be major tourist attractions, generate funds and their protection would by synergy help protect habitat and prevent poaching of tigers and other existing wildlife.

Or is it a kind of a speculative conservation?
