This thread will talk about the animals that once lived, and still live at the mappin terraces of London zoo.

The Current animals that live there are 2 emu, and approximately 6 Bennet's wallabies all called Ian.

The Original Terraces were designed for deer, Brown bears and waterfowl, over time, the terraces became home to various animals, such as
Goats
Pigs
Penguins
Snow leopards
sheep
polar bears

Inside the Mountains are where the aquarium was situated, until it's closure in 2019

Peccaries, Indian Wild Boar and European Wild Boar have all been housed on the Mappins in the past. Markhor, Ibex, Urial, Mouflon and Wild Cretan Goat have also been housed on top of it at one time in the past.

I think the sloth bears and Hanuman langurs moved in together on the Mappins in 1997 - certainly the guidebook I have from that year suggests the enclosure was brand-new for the year. The guidebook also says that a third species, the Reeve's muntjac, shared with them.

When were Snow Leopards kept on the Mappins?

I understand times change and animal welfare evolves but, good grief, what a sorry state of affairs this exhibit has become from what it once was.

Sadly, I get the impression it’s in a terminal state of decline, what with the defunct Aquarium practically propping it up, and would cost millions to restore.

Snow leopard however would be an excellent shout should an eccentric millionaire visit the ZSL offices waving a blank cheque!

And to think, there was once a masterplan that intended to house gorilla on the Mappins!

Hope you don't mind me asking ,but what made you think that snow leopards had been housed on the Mappins ?

I would personally love to see bears return to the Mappins someday. They are a major megafauna that London has a history with that isn't represented in the current collection.

I have mentioned this before (as have a few other members), but I think Sun Bears would be a great choice if London wants to bring bears back to the Mappins, which I personally think they should for the reasons mentioned above by JVM. Small enough to fit comfortably in the space and hopefully avoid too much controversy, but also geographically appropriate, perhaps able to combine with the nearby Komodos, gibbons, tigers and Babirusa to create a Southeast Asian zone of sorts, a theme which can definitely be expanded upon in the future. Sun Bears have also been mixed with Binturong at a variety of zoos, so that will be an option if London would like to expand their collection further.

The original Mappin Terraces were designed for all species of bears (not just Brown) with the Polar bears being initial inhabitants. There were also many more species than you list when the Mappin Terraces first opened but never Snow Leopards.

They did try that in the late 1990s when they turned it into a sloth bear exhibit, but for whatever reasons it didn't take.

Over the years, many different ungulate species were kept on the lower level of the Mappin Terraces but it's wrong to say the terraces were originally designed for deer.

It's inaccurate to say "over time, the terraces became home to various animals such as goats.....sheep". The "mountains" on the upper level were designed specifically for goats and sheep and they were kept there since the Mappin Terraces opened in 1913.

.

Have any Deer sp. ever been kept there?

Whilst many different species have occupied the lower terrace, it was initially used for deer (and flamingos) with Japanese, Formosan, Axis, Fallow deer and Chital listed in the 1914 guidebook.
