Ueno Zoo I emailed Ueno Zoo about former species and here’s what they said

Hello, ZooChatters. Here’s what Ueno Zoo said regarding about their lost species in an email I sent to them.

Currently, species like mouse deer, Asian lion, bearded barbet, fossa, piping guan do not have a place in the zoos master plan at the moment, and so the zoo will focus on species they feel like prioritising at the moment like panda or Asian elephant. However, it is possible that the zoo might exhibit these former species sometime in the future if they decide to. The zoo does have plans to bring back okapi though.

Also, I contacted about the zoos maned wolf in the medical centre and it’s doing well, it’s just that the zoo will not exhibit it due to age related issues. This means maned wolf is not entirely gone from Japan.

Hopefully, we will see former species of Ueno Zoo and Japan come back, paving a path for more awareness of these animal species.

Thank you for this information. I surely hope that these species will make a comeback someday. Great news about the Maned Wolf, happy that it is still here!

I don’t think Indian lions won’t be returning either. If I remember correctly per the Tokyo Zoological Society’s Zoo Stock Plan, which planned to eliminate redundancies in TZS zoos to give more space for their animals, lions were planned to get phased out from Ueno. The Indian lions were only brought after public objections and now that the lions are gone I don’t see them being returned to gorilla and tiger wood exhibit of Ueno.

I will continue to message Ueno Zoo and other Japanese zoos and aquariums regarding their species, future plans and other topics.
I'd be most interested in what plans there are for the Japan Monkey Centre. It was difficult to work out which developments were new and whether these new developments were part of an ongoing plan for improvements. There is certainly a lot of scope - such a superb collection but so poorly maintained. However this was not a comment on the health of the animals which all looked well, but it would have been wonderful to see them in better environments.

Asian lion
Asian lion should not return to Ueno Zoo. After the last Asian lion died, both enclosures have been used for the Sumatran tigers. One enclosure is designated for elderly females and the male to go outside, while the other is exclusively for the females intended for breeding. This setup creates a territory similar to that in the wild, and Ueno's keepers mentioned that it might have led to successful pairings with the male.
