Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo Discussion thread 2024

Went for a visit yesterday, cool but sunny day. Front entrance is coming along, a ton has been cleared on the right side as you come in, where the new building will go, and the left side where the old entrance was is cleared out. The old ticket booth for all the rides is gone and that areas is widened and paved over, I suspect for where the temporary entrance will be during construction.

Unfortunately both the giraffe house and Indo-malaya pavilions were closed for power system maintenance. It was announced on the website prior, I was just silly and forgot to check.

The Malayan woods is so nice to have back, the clouded leopard was right out hanging out, best view I have ever gotten. They are such beautiful animals. It's nice to have some inverts back in there as well. It still makes me so sad to think about losing the clouded leopards, which then gets me down the spiral of being sad about species being phased out. We could see down where the new boardwalk was being built, and the fences for the tigers are completely gone. Will be interesting to see if there are going to be any exhibit modifications when they go back up.

Americas was its usual self, but the Sakis were not on display, some exhibit maintenance in the middle exhibit. It seems so much quieter with only the two sloths, a few of the Golden Lion Tamarins there. RJ, the otter was super playful and the snapping turtle was up sunbathing which was cool to see.

There was some maintenance on the core woods boardwalk as it looks like a tree fell on the railing during a recent storm.

At the Rainforest pavilion the Gorillas were in the day room due to the glass being broken. They are fixing it now as there is some construction boarding up and there was some welding going on. Interestingly, the panel that was broken last year and replaced with solid wall was not behind the cladding, so looks like it will be permanently covered. Family troop was in the day room. The bachelors in the back off view.

I don't know if has been mentioned but the Aldabra Tortoise who had surgery is back in the enclosure with her companion.

The outdoor gorilla exhibit is getting a ton of new wooden structures built in it. They are beautifully done. Although far out, I can't wait for the day that we have an open air outdoor gorilla enclosure, although I don't know when that day will come.

The new board walk is coming along, as in the pictures it comes out at the picnic site, Right at the end of the Jungle rope course and the start of the restaurant. My hope is that it will sort of lead directly into where the new Savanna Pavilion will be in the future.

Savanna was quiet, the hippos were out, although when we went by they were starting to shift in it appeared. Cheetah, Baboons, Lions, Hyenas and Watusi were out. The rest (Giraffe, Warthog, Kudu, Zebra, Rhino, Ground hornbill, Eland, and ostrich) were inside and not viewable. The hyena, who I was told likely Kanzi, was very active and rich tup to the glass, although I see there is some new fencing that blocks direct access to the glass viewing parts of the hyena exhibit. I am guessing one of the hyenas was not responding well to guest being so close.

The new sign at the start of the walk to the Domain is great (they have two actually, one at the zoo mobile station and one past ostrich enclosure. Honestly would love to see more of these signs around the zoo (perhaps at the entrances of pavilions and areas). I attached a photo of it, although I don't know why it is sideways..)

The moose are off display, everything else is out, although we couldn’t see the raccoons. Bowen, the new cougar was quite active, all over the exhibit and up int he hammock. A definite highlight of the day. We got one vocalization. Shintay the grizzly was up and foraging midway through the exhibit. The bison were all at the back of their respective paddocks.

We were running out of time at this point so just saw the polar bears and tigers. Mazy the Amur tiger, and Kemal the sumatran were out, each with access to the inside and outside exhibits of their respective sides. Hard, the male sumatran, was not viewable, so much be in holding. We did not walk by the third new exhibit, but could still see lots of construction equipment around. Not sure what the status is there as it seemed to move so quickly and now came to complete halt.

Did not get to the temple, Australasia or the rest of Eurasia.

Overall a good visit, the amount of construction and closures does feel a little overwhelming. As a regular guest this doesn’t bother me too much, but could see it being frustrating for some visitors. However it is all steps in the right direction and hopefully things will be a bit more opened up for the summer! Let me know if any questions.

I was also there yesterday, quite an enjoyable visit. It's a pity you didn't make it to Australasia, the kangaroos were out (although I didn't see the joey), and both wombats were also outside enjoying the sunshine in the "Marsupial Summer Home".
I was also very lucky that when I went into the Americas pavilion there was a lot of primate activity - the sakis were out and chasing each other around (I saw them in the further exhibit where Sally the two-toed sloth lives) and, amazingly Nettie the new two-toed sloth was awake and very active for mid-afternoon. She ate from a puzzle ball, then hung from the ceiling and gave herself a long and vigorous grooming session. First time I've seen her outside her sleeping box.

This is a classic example of all about the timing. It's what I always tell people, some days one species will be doing nothing, and then the next time they are the most active. It is what makes going back multiple times worth it! Glad you got some good views of the Wombats and Sakis

Updates from my visit today:
  • The current echidna/bettong habitat has had some logs and other climbing areas installed. Could we be seeing the return of tree kangaroos?
  • The old Komodo dragon exhibit is now occupied by a red-legged seriema, likely from the Kid's Zoo.
  • Part of the former outdoor Australasia aviary (now holds peafowl) is now a visitor viewing area. A large shelter is also present in the aviary, but I'm unsure of what it'd be used for.
  • The former Meller's chameleon exhibit now contains a juvenile Fijian iguana.

It is interesting to see the Red-Legged Seriema there in Australasia, a bit of a geographic miss, but at least the exhibit is being used. Fingers crossed to get some Komodo Dragons again.

I would be surprised if we got a tree kangaroo again, I miss our old girl puzzle dearly, but the species was on the phase out list when that was published previously.

I am guessing the peafowl will be remaining inside due to bird flu.

The Zoo has released some new branding to coincide with the 50th anniversary. It is asking people to join the zoo as a Guardians of Wild. Lots of really nice pictures and a social media campaign has started as well.

Does anyone know if any of the orangutans have been out on their outdoor exhibit? Hopefully the family is less nervous about using the exhibit this year around!

Great question, I haven't heard or seen anything. I was hoping we might see a little sneak peak if it was happening on Dolf's Instagram. I wonder if with the boardwalk construction hey are keeping them in, although that is on the other side of the pavilion. My only other thought might be that they are letting the plants grow a little first to root in nicely, although it's not like they were rough on them last year haha.

The Zoo's social media posted today that Puppe was outside. This is the first I have seen of them going outside. Will be interesting to see how it goes this year.

I was there yesterday (Saturday) and it was open to the public - albeit with a sign on the door advising that although they have access they may choose not to go out, and advising that there are also orangutans on exhibit inside.
The keepers are doing the same as last year...basically encouraging them out with treats, either already hung up on branches or by throwing them into the habitat from the sides. I was lucky enough to see Jingga tentatively make her way out to grab something then high-tail it back into the safety of the inside world. Apparently she'd already done that a few times earlier in the day. And later in the afternoon, Budi did it too (with Ramai waiting to snatch the goodies from him).
I was also told that Kembali had been doing the same the previous day.

So, obviously for now Puppe is still the only one who will remain outside, but I think it's encouraging that the orangutans seem to have started off this year where they left off last year, and that they're reasonably comfortable with moving through the outdoor 'transfer tube' and then being in the research station, as well as sitting in the open doorway enjoying the sun (since there were fears that the zoo might have to start over again just getting them to transfer at all, let alone go out).
Small steps but there definitely is activity!

In Dolf's Instagram last week, Dolf posted that a new application will guide you in the zoo. The logo is the normal tz logo with 50 year anniversary. I will try to send it here.

Do you think the renovated Australasia outdoor aviary will actually house something other than peacocks at some point? I really find that space wasted on peacocks even though I know they are being housed there as a preventative measure for Avian flu.

The Animal Lives with Purpose plan did discuss making it an area for older macropods.

"Re-open the outside aviary to offer an immersive experience for guests. Wallaby’s or geriatric
kangaroos could be exhibited here along with selected bird species."

Will have to wait and see if that is the still the plan or not as things always change.
