ZOO Antwerpen Zoo Antwerpen News 2024

The two warthogs (1.1) live on the same plane as the three giraffes. The giraffes are relaxed, but the warthogs are still a bit nervous.

A transport crate is placed aganist the okapi builing. Probably to move one of the two young males, Xandor or Xambo.

Three hamlyni monkeys (2.1) are moved from the building with the small monkeys to the building with the chimps and gorillas. Purpose is to introduce them to the gorillas.

It was reported recently on Laafsekikkers and in Facebook groups that the warthog pair now has at least two piglets.

Some updates from my visit to Zoo Antwerpen today.
  • The former Hamlyn's monkey exhibit in the small monkey house has been emptied. It will be interesting to see what they will do with these rooms. I saw the Hamlyn's monkeys in the smaller gorilla indoor exhibit (not the sunroom), still separated from the gorillas.
  • The ruffs in the wader aviary were very actively lekking, I also saw a few brief fights between the males in their full breeding plumage. Quite impressive and nice to see.
  • The avocets in the wader aviary have several chicks (on the Laafsekikkers it was reported there being five), I also saw a very freshly hatched chick during my visit.
  • In the savanna aviary I saw the African spoonbills and yellow-billed storks working on nests.
  • The warthogs currently appear to be separated from the giraffes again, perhaps because they have piglets, as reported above. I did not see the piglets myself, I only saw the male Boboti outside.
  • In the reptile house two exhibits - the rhinoceros iguana and radiated tortoise exhibits - are under renovation, with the substrate removed and the inhabitants off-show for the time being. Another exhibit, the Komodo dragon exhibit, has had all of the sand on the visitor side removed, but the Komodo dragon was visible. In there row of terrariums near the Komodo dragon exhibit there have been some changes: the former Great Lakes bush viper terrarium now houses Emperor scorpion and Mourning gecko, the former rhinoceros viper terrarium now houses juvenile Red-footed tortoises and Cuban iguanas. In the reptile house nursery a baby Brazilian rainbow boa has gone on show.
  • In the Mediterranean outdoor aviary of the bird house, a person was conducting some kind of research. There was some equipment in the aviary and a guy was walking around on the roof making observations. In this aviary I also saw the European thick-knee for the first time in several years.
  • The renovations at the hippo house continue. At this point it seems they are doing a full renovation of the facade on the side of the outdoor exhibit and adding some structures on this side. Unfortunately it still remains unclear what they are doing and whether the upper viewing area for the hippos and the marabou/vulture aviary will return.
  • The Australian indoor aviary in the bird house is undergoing a deep cleanse, all the birds are off-show for the time being, all branches and nests had already been removed and all the substrate was being removed.
  • The Emei Shan Liocichla aviary has been fully screened off with a reed mat.
  • The demolition of the jubilee complex seems to progressing pretty fast. The former dolfinarium/sea lion building and bear indoor areas have been reduced to a giant pile of rubble, and of the big cat/Nocturama/raptor section most of the front of the building on the zoo side has been removed.
I will be posting some pictures of the hippo house renovation and the jubilee complex demolition in the gallery as soon as possible.

Californian sea lion Zoë died yesterday, after suffering loss of appetite and gastro-intestinal illness. Treatment failed to improve her condition. She would have been 13 next week.

Soon a new species will arrive at the zoo. Multiple Black-bellied sandgrouse were confiscated a couple of months ago and were kept to rehabilitate in VOC neteland. Soon they will leave for Antwerp zoo. After a quarantine period they will be displayed and housed permanently.

Good to have sandgrouse back in Zoo Antwerpen after the chestnut-bellied sandgrouse were lost from the Asian indoor aviary a few years ago.

Curious to see whether the black-bellied sandgrouse will go to that aviary or perhaps to Mediterranean outdoor aviary, or yet another place.

A rarely shown species in European zoos, with a certain history at Antwerp.
I hope the 1.0 confiscated specimen at De Zonnegloed could join them.

Apparently this species is not so easy to keep in captivity when I look at the recent results in Berlin.
The species is no longer listed on ZTL for de Zonnegloed, citing that it's no longer listed on the website of the park.

According to news posted at the Laafsekikkers (Nieuwstopic Zoo Antwerpen (2024) - Pagina 11 - Laafsekikkers.be):

The sandgrouse are now on show in the African indoor aviary in the bird house.

Hump-head/dolphin cichlids (Cyrtocara moorii) have been added to the clawed frog tank in the reptile house.

Some additional designs for the new jubilee complex were published.

On the Laafsekikkers forum recent photos of the renovation of the hippo house were posted. A new spiral staircase near the tapir house and a new bridge are being installed, it looks like the upper viewing area will become a fair bit large than the previous one.

In the building next to the entrance, which formerly housed the members' service, the zoo has opened an ice cream parlor, which will sell ice cream to eat on the go, as there will be no table to eat in the space. The ice cream is made by an artisanal manufacturer. The graphics for the ice cream parlor have the same or very similar fonts and drawings as the Grand Café Flamingo in the zoo. As the parlor directly opens onto a public square people who do not visit the zoo will also be able the get ice cream there.

I think elephant bull Assam is leaving this evening since he was standing inside the building in a stable which is connected to the container.

The gorilla now have some food enrichment which will hopefully have as result that they spend more time in the outside area.

There are young birds: 1 yellow-billed stork (Mycteria ibis), at least two Abdim stork (Ciconia abdimii), some superb starlings (Lamprotornis superbus), two blue-faced honeyeater ((Entomyzon cyanotis). I think one king penguin has an egg and another couple was mating. A blue-crowned laughing thrush (Garrulax courtoisi) and a chestnut-backed thrush (Geokichla dohertyi) are sitting in a nest.

At least one oriental garden lizard (Calotes versicolor) has arrived and is on display with the rhino iguana. The Motagua spiny-tailed iguana (Ctenosaura palearis) has a nestbox in which she was digging in the ground.
