Zoochat Big Year 2024

And finally, I'm ending with a question. A part of my time in Kenya involved live trapping and releasing small mammals as part of an ongoing research project. Am I allowed to count those species as a part of my list? As far as I can tell, it's unclear in the rules - the animals were wild, but I would not have seen them had they not been trapped. Anyway, Kenya update will be posted whenever that matter is clarified!
Agree with @Chlidonias. Mammal watchers usually count trapped small mammals, as it is often the only way they can see or identify them. Some even take traps with them on trips to use when legal. For myself I don't believe my hobby of watching animals in the wild justifies the risk or trauma that me trapping can involve. However I am more than happy to count animals trapped as part of a research project. As had been said, it is your list. If interested in mamma watching more generally I suggest you check out www.mammalwatching.com.

Really nice additions all around from the first part of May
Had a nice time visiting family and parks in the Chicago area last month, including an excellent morning at Montrose point. Probably my favorite day of birding with many nice shorebirds on the beach and a long-awaited warbler lifer. Best of all, I finally saw a Piping plover, Imani, who landed on the beach and walked within feet around me, redemption for when I missed his parents by a week in 2022. The Ruddy Turnstones and Dunlins were beautiful too, as was the male Cerulean Warbler I spent almost three hours waiting for at a forest preserve in Lake County. The lazy guy decided to wait till 11 am to wake up and start buzzing away, which I heard from the parking lot as I was stepping into the car to drive away. Afterwards I also narrowly avoided dipping on the pair of European Goldfinches in northern Cook Co, an established species that has just now gained recognition in IL. It all made up for missing the Swainson's Hawk and other targets earlier in the week.

Sheboygan beach?
Yes. Not even the first time I've had Little Gull there, and both the Little Gull and the Laughing Gull are far from the weirdest gull I've ever see on that beach (that would be Black-headed).

Didn't mention them in my prior post but I also had Franklin's Gull and 40 Lesser Black-backed Gulls there today. Had a couple of Great Black-backed Gulls there too a week or so ago.

Big messy catch-up post incoming...

Birds
468. Little Gull Hydrocoloeus minutus

Also got my state first Laughing Gull, which has been a glaring gap on my Wisconsin list for some time now.
Birds
469. Worm-eating Warbler Helmitheros vermivorum

470. Louisiana Waterthrush Parkesia motacilla
471. Bell's Vireo Vireo bellii
472. Dickcissel Spiza americana
473. Northern Mockingbird Mimus polyglottos

If the weather permits next list might be quite long, but likely only for one species group.

And so it happened! A few nights of moth watching got me quite a neat list of species, including several lifers, though there were few particularly rare species among them. The hundreds of tortrix moths were quite spectacular though, and there were plenty of lovely species present. Other additions were seen during a butterfly monitoring session, when I could not resist to check out some meres close to my butterfly patch. While it was quite sunny, it wasn't particularly warm, so most dragonflies were still hidden away in the vegetation. Nonetheless one of the most hoped-for species did show quite well: two males yellow-spotted whitefaces. Whitefaces are only small dragonflies, but their character and striking colouration more than make up for what they lack in size.

Okay, sorry for the delay but typing this all out took much longer than I was anticipating! I'm posting mammals, reptiles, and amphibians first, as birds are long enough I feel they justify their own post.
Everything sighted here comes from Laikipia (mostly the Mpala and Ol Pejeta Conservencies), Aberdare National Park, Nairobi, or from traveling between these places.
I put everything into an iNat list so I could easily get scientific names, so the sorting of the lists originates from there.

Sorry to keep questioning, but were these all in WI? If so, very nice!

Sounds like a fantastic trip. There are several mammals in there I am very envious of.

Just got back from the Atlantic and Ocean City area, and boy was it spectacular! I got as many new species in just 2.5 days there as I did in the entirety of last month’s migration season in North Jersey. The Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge was easily the best place I’ve ever gone birding and the Ocean City Welcome Center felt (and smelled) like the Aquatic Bird House at the Bronx Zoo with Hundred of Herons, Ibises, and Egrets. I set a personal record of 20 new species in one day (18 Birds, 2 Herptiles, and an additional heard species,) something that will likely only be broken after I travel to an entirely new continent later this year. Definitely not a Holiday Weekend to forget!
