Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo News 2024

I Always wonder why Doesn't Twycross zoo keep gorillas, They have orangutans, chimpanzees and bonobos, and they have enough space. I don't know whether they have kept them in the past, but maybe it's just not many are available currently

I must have been looking at a figment of my imagination when at Twycross yesterday watching the gorillas :D

Except that Twycross Zoo does have gorillas and have had them continuously since 1965 lol! :p And just to add something, the zoo only opened in 1963 so they have had them for nearly the entire existence of the zoo.

A few bits of news from Twycross:

The last Variegated Spider Monkey ‘Magdalena’ has left the collection. Her former enclosure near the Tamarins is now being refurbished for a different species.

The Emperor Tamarins were let out onto the trees neighbouring their exhibit. It was fantastic to see them in the large trees. I didn’t have my camera on me at the time so I’ll post images from my phone to the media page later.

‘Tommy’ the chimpanzee has settled in well. Whenever I’m in Chimpanzee Eden he is sitting next to the glass. The others seem to enjoy playing with him and it’s good to see him interact with a larger troop of chimpanzees compare to living alone or in a pair.

The area near the Tapirs is being cleared. This is possibly going to be turned into a new enclosure for a deer species.

The Diana Monkeys are back on show and can now be seen as the development inside the enclosure has been finished.

All of the babies which have been born in the last few months are all doing well. Both Francois Langurs are now starting to turn black. The Pileated Gibbon infants name should be a

nounced soon.

Told four of the Dianna monkeys moved to France mid May, unsure to which zoo.

Tufted deer moving due to the building work starting.

Shelley giant tortoise has passed away.

Is this for the Tufted Deer currently held or is this for a new/returning species? Also, what was your source for this and do you know the plan for the tapirs? Any information you could please provide would be appreciated as this is potentially a very exciting time for the zoo.

I was informed by a keeper that the space is being used for a deer species. I only post things on here if I was informed by a keeper or a member of the education team.

The tapirs are staying at the zoo. I don’t believe there are any plans for them as the zoo is focusing on the new Orangutan complex.

Interesting as unsure as where the tapirs may go? Not sure where there’s room. Maybe with the vicuña?

Is it known to what zoo and where the Diana monkeys were exported?

What Cercopithecidae species are left at Twycross (and I don't mean the single Diana monkey)? What is the long term plan for all their Colobine monkeys? Overall plan in the masterplan?

Like another post mentioned the L’Hoests and De Brazza’s Monkeys are still present within the collection. The zoo keeps a breeding troop of both.

The zoo keeps 2.3 L’Hoests and 2.4 De Brazza’s. The plan is to send a male L’Hoests ‘Kanye’ to a new zoo now he has reached maturity and keep the family group which consists of the two parents and their daughters. The father ‘Gimini’ may leave in the future to allow the young daughters to breed.

The De Brazza’s are split into two troops. The main troop consists of 3 females and a male who arrived from Blackpool in 2022 called ‘Marcus’ and the other troop consists of mother and son who’s future is not certain at the zoo and may leave in the future.

From my understanding the plan is to keep all 3 species of Guenon within the collection. I’ll get more information within the next couple of days and post it here.

The Tapir girls are staying where they are. The tufted deer are moving from their current location behind the old lemur outdoor enclosure (due to national research buildings given green light to start building) to wet and wild area into the old stork area directly opposite the current outdoor Dianna monkey enclosure. Other than A444 traffic noise it's a perfect location for the Tufted deer as lots of shaded trees.

There was another post about the Colobus monkeys further up, these left the zoo a year or two back. Debrazza and Howler monkeys took over there former enclosures.

Can you find out. Whi h Diana monkey is still there,if that is in fact the case. MY guess would be either the breeding male or one of his sons. Possibly they intend to restart the group with new females?

Once I found out some more information I’ll post it here. I don’t have the full details yet so I won’t share the current information I have incase it’s incorrect and misinform people.

The idea you have about creating a new troop with new females seems the smartest.

This male? Seems to be the only Dianna monkey at TZ. Taken 16/06/2024.
There is only one male left. He is also set to leave the collection soon. I did have a bit of information before about his future though I wanted to make sure everything was confirmed before I may have confused people. I believe the zoo has no plans to keep the species once the last male leaves. It’s a massive loss for the zoo. They’re a great species full of character.

From my understanding he’s set to go to a new collection where he will meet new females and create a breeding troop.

That doesn't surprise me..they do tend to give up on species rather than persevere. It was only a few years ago they formed this group and not so long after that, were publicising the first Diana birth at the zoo for many years, now just going out of them...I also guess this last male may go abroad or is it too much to hope another UK zoo is establishing a group.
