Bird Paradise Bird Paradise news 2024

I remember seeing blue-eared pheasants for the first time at the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park. The male was very friendly. Looking forward to seeing them again on home soil.

I'm also curious if puffins and other alcids may make a return to Mandai's collection down the road.

Yeap, I’m aware of that. But it didn’t really matter in the past when they were at the old Penguin Coast in JBP.

I have fond memories seeing the Atlantic puffins beside the penguins back then, & it was a nice touch to showcase the parallels in convergent evolution.

Separately a male Lesser Bird of Paradise has been moved to a holding cage at Mysterious Papua. Seems like they are trying to introduce him into the aviary.

I'm excited with this new and hope they can successfully release it in the aviary! Ironically, once you know the location of the holding cage, it’s relatively easier to spot it from afar as compared to the various BOP cage setups at Winged Sanctuary.

Does anyone know whether yellow-streaked lories were recently introduced at the Australian Outback? I spotted a lory with black face patches earlier but unsure which species it was. It was very similar to the yellow-streaked lories that can be found in the aviary next door.

Lastly, what is the current Bird Paradise policy on pinion/wing clipping? I’m curious whether the feathers of some of the flamingos/storks/cranes are pinioned/clipped?

Sambisig has access to both sides of the aviary via an opening at the nest platform

The Burrowing Owl is no longer in Mandai's collection. Not sure if he died or was exported.

IDK on that part but one keeper explained to me that the one Toco Toucan from Amazonian Jewels had to move because she wasn't being a good neighbour to the rest of the birds.

I see, I did see the individual disturbing other birds' nests few months ago and it even ate an egg in one occasion. I was quite surprised the keeper was quite chill when I mentioned that incident.

2 qns about Winged Sanctuary:

1) how many Southern Ground Hornbills are there? i saw only one in my last few visits

2) are the Negros Bleeding-hearts off show?

There are 1.1 Southern Ground Hornbills at Winged Sanctuary. They like to rest in the nest box so they might not always be visible.

The Negros Bleeding-hearts were on show at Winged Sanctuary as of last weekend.
