Tierpark Hellabrunn Munich zoo news

I just finished my partial trip to Hellabrunn. The takin enclosure seems to have progressed with new climbing rocks placed to the area despite the construction work not being completed. Meanwhile the Antarctic penguin enclosure had no water in it unlike my last visit. The revamped savanna area only had some piles of sand in it but there weren’t any visible animals in the enclosure so I couldn’t tell if it was complete or not. The construction/maintenance in the wolf enclosure was complete with at least one animal outside. There was a mini-diger in the monkey islands so seems like it will take some time before the animals in the smaller primate building get out. Regarding the same building I was welcomed by this scene:

For those who don’t know the area with the removed glass is the cotton-top tamarin enclosure. If one seeks to go to the other side of the enclosure then they have to get out of the building to go to the other side.

I also saw an unsigned lizard in the giant katydid enclosure I will ask for ID later in the ID gallery.

On a personal note I saw a marmot for the first time on my visits to Hellabrunn.

Does it require luck to see the marmots? I saw them at my first try when I was there 2 weeks ago.
Perhaps they come out of hiding more now that the chamois are gone?

Not really I just never seen them myself ever since Spring started.

Updates from my visit:

  • the empty chamois enclosure is now occupied by domestic goats (Bulgarian longhair and African dwarf).
  • The mountain hares have left the collection. Their enclosure was unsigned and the zoo doesn’t list them on their website either so seems like they won’t be returning anytime soon.
  • The takin enclosure
  • Antarctic penguin enclosure renovation still isn’t complete.
  • The section of the savanna area that was under renovation was occupied with mountain zebras so it’s safe to assume the work is complete.
  • The takin enclosure is still going on with the rocky outcrop taking shape.
  • The construction around the cotton-top tamarins aren’t blocking the smaller primate house anymore. The outdoor enclosure of the cotton-tops seems to be covered with the wire-suspended climbing props being replaced with tree stems and branches.

Prehensile tail skink is in the tortoise house.

Brazilian guinea pig is in the children’s zoo. It shares the same building with kune kune and domestic guinea pigs.

Pallas’s cats and lynx are pretty much next to each other. They share the same visitor path with the storks. Marked red on the image.

Eagle and barn owl can be seen in the flight show.

Little owl is in the row of aviaries that are a part of the now closed bat house (shown in the map with a barn owl), specifically next to the path by the ibexes. But that path is now closed to the public.

The zoo does not list Satyr tragopan on the website nor the 2022 animal inventory. It instead lists Temnick’s tragopan. Those can be seen by the wild horses next to the (closed) path to the pelicans. The enclosure is easy to find with the screeching of the flock of Derby’s parrots that shares the exhibit with them. Marked blue in the image.

Rhinoceros ratsnake is in the Aquarium building, on the 'upper'/ground floor level, where the other snakes are. I am not sure if this part of the aquarium is currently inaccessible as it's the lower/basement level that is flooded.

Anthony's poison dart frogs are in the tortoise house, in the same terrarium as the prehensive-tailed skink (I didn't see any, but they were signed)

I did not see the milk frog, keel-bellied lizard or reticulated python in april, nor did I see any signage for them. They were probably kept in currently closed 'Dschungelwelt' and might have been moved behind the scenes, or left the zoo entirely.

The little row of aviaries with little owl and others was accessible when I was there in april. When and why did that path close?

Those are Baron‘s green racers per the zoo.

It might have to do with the fact that the aviaries are a part of the now closed bat house.

Well, I was sure you were wrong here because ZTL made no mention of Baron's green racer (only as a former holding) while it did for rhinoceros tree snake. So I checked my photographs and turns out you are right. Luckily I photographed the enclosure with the signage and it does say Baron's green racer.

The entry for the rhinoceris tree snake on ZTL might have been a case of mistaken identity because the only source is someone's visit in nov 2023. Both species are quite silimar despite not even being in the same genus.

I just got out of the zoo. Here are my observations:

The kiang enclosure was occupied by the chital and nilgai, which were not in their usual enclosure.

I saw two great white pelican chicks. I did see one under its mother but I didn’t announce it previously, not knowing if the chick would make it. Now it’s larger and

Subantarctic penguin enclosure, Dschunglewelt, takin enclosure, and cottontop tamarin enclosure are still under construction.

Panther chameleon and round-eared sengi are still not on display.

Blackbuck are in their usual habitat, next to the playground and across one of the rhinoceros habitats. I never had eyes on muntjac despite the sign still being up. I can’t say if they and the kiangs are bts or not since I never asked the keepers and other staff.

The path to the aviary row by the ibexes was still closed off during my visit.
