Snowleopard's Mammals: A Lifetime List of Species Mammalian and Non-Mammalian

I've seen Coatis at 117 zoos, which makes them one of the most frequently spotted mammalian species in zoos worldwide and likely to make my top 10 all-time most common critters. I will list all the zoos as 'Coatis', even though I've seen two species: South American/Brown-nosed Coati and also White-nosed Coati. If I had a dollar for every time a roadside American zoo had a sign saying 'Mountain Coati' I'd have at least twenty bucks, but obviously I have likely never seen that species.

There were two summers in particular when I saw a LOT of zoos with Coatis. The first was my trek through the southern United States, with Coatis popping up in zoos in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, etc. in 2015. Then in 2019 I saw a heck of a lot of Coatis in European zoos. Zoos in Western Europe LOVE small, active mammals such as Coatis, Meerkats and all types of Mongooses.

I'll highlight 10 memorable Coati exhibits and 10 horrible ones.

Denver Zoo (USA) has a famous structure called Bear Mountain that opened in 1918. Originally it was home to various monkeys, then a retired circus Polar Bear named 'Velox', then California Sea Lions. The federal Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 banned the bears and sea lions and eventually Coatis took up residence. Here's my photo from 2012:

Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum (USA) has a fabulous Coati exhibit that uses a deep, hidden moat in the foreground and 'invisnet' in certain areas to contain the Coatis. It works remarkably well and makes it seem as if the animals could escape at any moment. Recently, this exhibit sat empty for at least two years and I'm not sure what the status of it is right now, but when I visited the zoo in 2008 and 2011 it was a genuine highlight.

A memorable exhibit, because I'm not sure that it's even occupied these days, is the 'Mountain Coatimundi' enclosure at San Diego Zoo Safari Park (USA). Here's my photo from 2017 and this exhibit was tucked away near the entrance to the zoo. Even San Diego wasn't afraid to post a Mountain Coati sign!

There's been a lot of really poor Coati exhibits in subpar accommodation in American zoos. Some of these cages are truly shocking. Hemker Park Zoo (USA) had a sleeping Coati in a log in this tiny cage in 2014. Really, really, depressing.

Corn-crib cages are the bane of existence for American roadside menageries. Here's one at Indian Creek Zoo (USA), with the Coatis enjoying a cement floor, a few climbing props, and a small wooden box for shelter. When it rains, the roof creates a noise so loud that the animals most likely go deaf.

There's not even a metal roof at this Coati exhibit at Jo-Don Farms (USA):

A similarly inadequate Coati cage could be found at Boulder Ridge Wild Animal Park (USA) in 2018. Two Coatis laying on logs in a tiny home.

Perhaps the worst of the 10 awful ones I've highlighted was at Animal Haven Zoo (USA). Before it closed down, it was a real 'haven' to captive animals! You can see a hapless Coati peering out of its box and this cage has a wire floor and two branches and that's it. Insanity.

So, I've showed 3 memorable, decent Coati exhibits and 10 that verge on horrendous. Let's explore 7 more and stick to European zoos. Quality.

At Maubeuge Zoo (France), one that I recall well is an old bear grotto of a decent size, with Coatis and Raccoons together. The space available to the two species is much larger than what is shown in my 2019 photo.

A brilliant one at Planckendael Zoo (Belgium) has Coatis in a spacious exhibit (on the left) and then they can leave that space via overhead walkways (think of the Ewok Village in Return of the Jedi) and go over the heads of visitors. There's at least 3 Coatis in my 2019 photo:

Here's another Coati/Racoon mixed-species exhibit that is once again an old bear grotto with more space than what is shown here. This is at Tiergarten Monchengladbach (Germany).

Look at this stunning exhibit. It has Coatis and Squirrel Monkeys together, with full access to mature trees. A pair of commonly seen mammals showcased with perfection by Burgers' Zoo (Netherlands).

@ZooTripper365

Osnabruck Zoo (Germany) has the same design approach as Planckendael, with a nice Coati exhibit on one side and then a series of overhead walkways for the animals that truly stretches the realm of their available space. I suppose the theory is that the height of the trail system is just high enough to stop a Coati from leaping to freedom and somehow not fleeing into the German wilderness. This exhibit at Osnabruck is really successful by incorporating a children's wooden playground in the distance, with kids being able to run beneath the Coatis and it becomes immersive for the kids.

I'm assuming that you don't have good numbers for exactly which coati species you've seen where, but I'd be curious to know which is more common.

The enclosure at ASDM unfortunately currently contains South American Coati, which is just so sad. :( That facility is just not what it used to be.

Animal Haven Zoo is not closed, it's still open but only for a couple more years I think, when it will go up for sale (if anyone's interested).

I think I've seen a coati exhibit better than any of yours! The Belize Zoo displays a large colony of white-nosed coatis in the exhibit pictured below. This exhibit contains plenty of lush foliage, is extremely large, and has lots of climbing opportunities (including live trees!). Especially the fact they exhibit such a large group is impressive, as well as that the exhibit is massive. I'm pretty certain the four other coati exhibits I've seen could all fit in here with room to spare.

Coatís and raccoons are very common I’m Mexican zoos as they are often found in rural areas. Black bears are also common in Mexican zoos as they are found in northern Mexico and often problem bears end up in zoos. Chapultepec zoo and Zacango zoos have also brown bears which seem European. Leon zoo has a single Grizzly bear as well as black bears. There are spectacled bears at Chapultepec, Zacango and Morelia which are descended from Jersey bear, Charlie, who was paired with a female bear from Leipzig at Chapultepec. Guadalajara zoo has the last polar bear in Mexico, a female called Ágata. Chapultepec has the only giant panda in Latin America. Chapultepec is the Mexican zoo with the most bear species with black, brown, spectacled and giant panda.

Here's my photo from 2012:

full

Really, really, depressing.

full

A 'Mountain Coatimundi' cage at Timbavati Wildlife Park (USA) in 2014. There were two youngsters here, with another crappy enclosure elsewhere in the park for when they got older. And this was at a brand-new zoo!

Here's a Coati cage that is literally a slab of dirt at Tiger Safari (USA):

You can see a Coati perched on a branch in this 5-foot long raised box. Brutal. East Texas Gators & Wildlife Park (USA). How would this even be allowed?

Coati exhibit at Roscommon Zoo (USA) in 2018:

Corn-crib cages are the bane of existence for American roadside menageries. Here's one at Indian Creek Zoo (USA), with the Coatis enjoying a cement floor, a few climbing props, and a small wooden box for shelter. When it rains, the roof creates a noise so loud that the animals most likely go deaf.

full

There's not even a metal roof at this Coati exhibit at Jo-Don Farms (USA):

full

A similarly inadequate Coati cage could be found at Boulder Ridge Wild Animal Park (USA) in 2018. Two Coatis laying on logs in a tiny home.

full

Perhaps the worst of the 10 awful ones I've highlighted was at Animal Haven Zoo (USA). Before it closed down, it was a real 'haven' to captive animals! You can see a hapless Coati peering out of its box and this cage has a wire floor and two branches and that's it. Insanity.

full

Or is this one worse? A Coati in a box within an indoor desert, with no outdoor access, at GarLyn Zoo (USA).

The space available to the two species is much larger than what is shown in my 2019 photo.

full

A brilliant one at Planckendael Zoo (Belgium) has Coatis in a spacious exhibit (on the left) and then they can leave that space via overhead walkways (think of the Ewok Village in Return of the Jedi) and go over the heads of visitors. There's at least 3 Coatis in my 2019 photo:

full

Here's another Coati/Racoon mixed-species exhibit that is once again an old bear grotto with more space than what is shown here. This is at Tiergarten Monchengladbach (Germany).

full

Look at this stunning exhibit. It has Coatis and Squirrel Monkeys together, with full access to mature trees. A pair of commonly seen mammals showcased with perfection by Burgers' Zoo (Netherlands).

This looks suspiciously like it could have also been an old bear exhibit. Now there are Coatis here at Tierpark Hagenbeck (Germany) in a spacious, excellent habitat.

The Mountain Coati thing is out of control. I have no idea how it happened but it's taken the world by storm! Out of the first 20 results on google images for "Mountain Coati" only 4 are actually Mountain Coatis, and one of those is a drawing. I've been in more than one zoo where I attempt to tell staff they don't actually have Mountain Coatis, and they just confidently reassure me that they do.

@snowleopard I think you could comfortably say you've definitely never seen one. I've never heard of them being outside South America, other than Antwerp Zoo from 1948-1950 (which I just looked up on zootierliste right now lol.)

@birdsandbats from my check on zootierliste ring-tailed coati were far more common than white-nosed. They also feature 6 subspecies compared to none for ring-tailed.

The unfortunate reality is that the last major project/new attraction in a Disney World park that wasn't IP-based was Expedition Everest in 2006. As such, I'd unfortunately expect any future additions to DAK to be based in one or more IPs. Now, I'm not completely opposed to having IPs in DAK when done right (e.g., the Wilderness Explorer's program is a solid inclusion based on Up, Festival of the Lion King is a really solid show), and there are existing IPs that I think would fit the park well, but it's important to realize that this is the way Disney Parks as a whole are moving. Hopefully they chose to tie in IPs appropriately, and not try to shoe-horn in a land which doesn't fit in at all with the overarching theme of the park (e.g., Avatar).

While Indiana Jones isn't a perfect fit for DAK, Indiana Jones Adventure at Disneyland is a popular attraction using the same ride system as Dinosaur, making it a fairly logical re-theme. Hopefully they can find a way to tie it in to the park's nature theming. Encanto is a really popular movie at the moment, so it's only a matter of time before it makes its way into one of the parks, and since animals form a major plot point in the movie, DAK does seem like a logical choice.

As of now, I'm cautiously optimistic about this new addition- and hopeful that they incorporate a number of live animals in addition to the IP-based attractions, but it's a good sign that imagineers visited multiple locations in the Neotropics when planning this expansion. Hopefully soon we'll see a more detailed plan for this area.
What does IP mean?

My bad, stupid mistake. Here is the exhibit I referenced here:

All the trees in this picture are part of the exhibit and fully climbable and the exhibit is around 900 square metres (or 0.23 acres if you prefer that), which based on the Belize zoo map and satellite imagery is probably over twice the size of the one in Belize (which is still a very good enclosure for coati).

Interesting, that picture does look very impressive- and those are certainly very tall trees the coatis have access to! What's the social structure like in Burger's Zoo's exhibit?

They currently only have a few elderly females of ring-tailed coati, together with a bachelor group of Peruvian squirrel monkeys. As ring-tailed coati are on the phase-out list due to the EU invasive species regulation, this species will likely be gone in a few years time (they used to have an impressive breeding group of 10-15 animals before). Many zoos are now switching to white-nosed coatie, so I hope they will switch to that species in the near future too.

I've seen Raccoons, occasionally called Northern Raccoons or Common Raccoons, in 94 zoos. On some long road trips, when I'm occasionally visiting 4 small zoos in a day, I'll come across animals like Coatis and Raccoons 4 times per day and so that explains why I don't always hang around exhibits viewing common species. I get Raccoons in my backyard all the time, and curiously enough frequently in the middle of the day, so here is a species that I struggle to get excited over.

What is exciting is seeing Crab-eating Raccoons as I've only ever seen those guys TWICE in my entire life.

What are some memorable Raccoon exhibits?

The one at Minnesota Zoo (USA) is kind of crazy. It's designed to look like a forested area outside of a cabin, with hardly any natural substrate anywhere. I think the floor is mainly wood and mock-rock and there's even a half-obscured rocking chair on the porch. Weird.

Bear Country U.S.A (USA) must not have read the manual that Raccoons are arboreal species, because other than a bizarre fake cliff at the back, there's nothing to climb on in this flat enclosure.

Perhaps some of the junky Raccoon exhibits in American zoos are due to the animals being ex-pets? This setup at Wisconsin Deer Park (USA) almost appears to be an environment for someone's pet. A Raccoon living on wood panels! And 'RACOON' is the wrong spelling!

Not all European zoos are packed with great exhibits, as Tierpark Fauna (Germany) had a Raccoon cage in 2019 that included a picnic bench and a themed little swimming pool!

There's two Raccoons and one Striped Skunk in this photo I took at Artis Royal Zoo (Netherlands) in 2019. Not only did the zoos of Western Europe have FAR superior exhibits for Raccoons, but quite often there would be other species in there too.

Raccoons and Striped Skunks were together again at Antwerp Zoo (Belgium):

@KevinB

Maubeuge Zoo (France) and Tiergarten Monchengladbach (Germany) were both already mentioned in my previous post as those zoos had Raccoons and Coatis together, something which I saw a few times but never in North America. Pairi Daiza (Belgium) has Raccoons and Striped Skunks in the same exhibit. Safari Parc Monde Sauvage (Belgium) has the same combination.

Why are North American zoos so reluctant to have Raccoons with other species? The number of mixed-species exhibits in European zoos is FAR MORE than North American collections. What is the reasoning for that? I've seen Gorillas with Meerkats, Orangutans with Binturongs and things that North American zoos would never even conceive of.

You can see at least two Raccoons and one Striped Skunk together in this exhibit at Harry Malter Familiepark (Belgium):

Aachener Tierpark (Germany) has Raccoons sharing the same space as Small-clawed Otters and the exhibit is terrific. I saw a Raccoon up in a tree and several otters in their winding stream and it was something I'll probably never see in North America.

Procyonidae:

Coatis - 117 zoos (2 species: South American & White-nosed)
Northern Raccoons - 94 zoos
Crab-eating Raccoons - 2 zoos

I saw a raccoon at San Diego Zoo in the Northern Frontier/Polar Bear Plunge complex, alongside creatures such as polar bears, reindeer, and Arctic foxes.

I’d question the geographical placement, but then again, this complex supposedly also covers the distant exhibits for African hoofstock like zebras, cougars, and giant anteater.

@birdsandbats It's totally crazy how I saw Raccoons at loads of North American zoos and they were by themselves 99% of the time. Then in a single month in Europe I must have seen a minimum of a dozen exhibits with Raccoons combined with other species such as Striped Skunks, European Mink, Small-clawed Otters or Coatis. From a visitor's perspective, it's fantastic and some of these combinations have been around for decades and seem to work really well. It's actually super frustrating that more North American zoos don't adopt the same policies of having mixed-species exhibits for many mammals, as these species would encounter each other in the wild anyway.

@MGolka Omaha having Raccoons above American Alligators reminds me of a similar exhibit (also in Omaha) of Squirrel Monkeys above an Amazon river tank. Here's my photo of that exhibit from 2008 and it was in the Scott Aquarium.

@Jurek7 I'm shocked that a European zoo hasn't come up with a walk-through Coati exhibit...or is there one somewhere? I've seen photos of tourists in Mexico walking around with 15 or 20 Coatis near them and the animals would probably do well in a walk-through environment. There's tons of Barbary Macaque walk-throughs in European zoos and the big males have huge canines, so Coatis cannot be more dangerous than those primates.

@NNM. I know the exact exhibit that you are referring to and here's my 2011 photo of the Raccoon enclosure in the Northern Frontier/Polar Bear Plunge complex at San Diego Zoo. This exhibit has held a lot of different species, such as Snowy Owls, Yellow-throated Martens, Arabian Wildcats, Caracals, etc. Maybe even Arctic Foxes, or else that was an adjacent enclosure. San Diego has swapped species around a half-dozen times in some of their enclosures.

The exhibit at Omaha has Toco Toucans now instead of squirrel monkeys.

I can confirm that wild coatis are super chill, or at least White-nosed Coatis are. I've gotten within a few feet of them in Arizona and Costa Rica.

I've seen Kinkajous at 28 zoos. After seeing this species in a series of AZA zoos, I then saw Kinkajous in more than a dozen non-accredited roadside collections. I don't think any of them kept their animals in a nocturnal environment, as most of my examples are very basic metal cages. It's interesting that I've only ever seen Kinkajous 3 times in 120 European collections. I must have visited the wrong countries, haha, as there's loads in the United Kingdom.

@alexkant

Kinkajous can be popular pets, as they are friendly, inquisitive creatures. However, they can give a nasty bite if provoked and are mainly nocturnal animals who will be up making noise while humans are sleeping. Occasionally, zoos have used them as ambassador animals, as they can be put on a leash and taken out into public.

This is a great link that lists 21 reasons why NOT to have a Kinkajou as a pet. #7 is titled 'Bites are bad' and goes into detail about how Kinkajous can have deep bites. #12 tells how destructive they can be.
