I think that kulans have been long gone from the zoo since their old exclosure at the bottom of the hill by the cheetah compounds was emptied off hoofstock. The 2 female kulan were transferred to Plzen Zoo - I believe -. The only zoo in the Czech Republic that currently maintains a breeding group of this sturdy beautiful equid species. This area is planned to become the new polar bear area....

Zoo Praha holds an all male Mhorr dama gazelle group now.

What I do find peculiar is that the current zoo map has an icon for kulan in the Across the Continents portion up the hill.

Ring-tailed lemurs have a tiny greenhouse in the middle of their island. You can walk right up to the house but it´s very impractical place for photographing.

White-belted black-and-white ruffed lemurs live in small hut connected with their island. You can peek inside the hut though a window.

White-fronted lemurs are in the last section of Afrika Zblízka pavilion. It has glass front but their space is rather dim-lit.

Mouse lemurs should live in a vitrine in reverse-light-regime section of Afrika Zblízka but I haven´t seen them in ages. A regular reported it´s currently under refurbishment so might be empty.
 
How many square meters does the Prague Zoo's elephant house have, does it have different sections for male and female herds?

Total area of the house is somewhere between 1300-1400 m2 (I had seen different numbers in different sources). Elephants can use around 1100 m2 I would say, rest area serves as keeper corridors, storage and technical rooms.

The house has male and female section (with a gate between them). Males have 2 boxes and smaller dayroom. Females have 4 boxes and larger dayroom. Both have access to the same round swimming pool.

Here a pic from before opening date. The zoo has since done some remodelling (sand floor etc.) but general layout remains.

The Prague elephant house is only 11 years old, but zoo elephant house design runs forward by mile steps. Compare it with elephant house at zoo Zlin that is 2 years old but feels whole 1 generation younger. 3600 m2 roofed area.

2 Geoffroy's kittens, 4 Amur leopard cats, male beisa calf, red kangaroo, Chacoan mara, prairie dogs, Goodman mouse lemur, blue sheep, 2 west caucasian tur lambs and some tayra cubs.

Indian star tortoise, Asian box turtle, secret toadhead agamas, Indian rock pythons, Egyptian tortoise, smooth snakes, giant Asian pond turtle, Aesculapian snakes.

Scaly-breasted lorikeets, hooded vulture, 3 southern festive amazons, 2 milky storks, scaly-sided merganser, squacco herons, Mitchell's lorikeet, waldrapp, lesser kestrels, Philippine scops-owl, purple-naped lory, yellow-billed stork, European greenfinch, Edwards pheasant, pink pigeon, Eurasian spoonbill and a little pied cormoran chick.

A temporary poison dart frog exhibit will again open on 6th July.

Presented inside Gočárovy house. Every Sunday 1pm-2pm a keeper will be at site and interact with public.

Based on experience from previous years, ca 30 frog species would be on show and the exhibit gets removed after period of 2 months. The frogs are loaned by a private owner (who happens to be a zoo employee).

The zoo has two Gočárovy houses (both stand along road behind white-lipped deer). One is used as a restaurant serving traditional Czech pub cuisine (link to their menu with prices). The second one is used for temporary exhibitions and souvenire shop.

History of these houses is interesting.

They were built in year 1920 at Kbely airport (Kbely today is a military airport but back then it was main civilian airport of Prague). One of them was an airport terminal hall and the second one was an apartment of airport manager. The houses are in style called "Czech art deco" built by architect Josef Gočár. They were slated to be demolished in 1970s but former zoo director Zdenek Veselovsky rescued them and moved to the zoo grounds. They stood in front of mountain hoofstock pen since 1977 and were used for children education, apartments for zoo guests and staff. Till 2002 when flood destroyed them. The zoo then salvaged some original wooden parts, found original Gočár´s blueprints in a museum and built these houses again, just at another part of the zoo that is not in danger of flooding.

I'm sure there have been many attemps, and I guess that's part of the reason one couple is kept behind the scenes. (Prague keeps 2.2 shoebills but only 1.1 are on display)

Pairi Daiza did it once, but those shoebills were/are kept in quite different circumstances.
I doubt we will ever see breeding success for this species again.

What was so different and successful about Pairi Daiza’s shoebill care that lead to this result, and why do ‘t you think it can be recreated?

Apart from Pairi Daiza both Al-Wabra and Tampa had success breeding shoebills. I think it is definitely possible, but it requires a different set-up from how shoebills were traditionally kept. Saddle-billed stork were supposedly very difficult too, but Cottbus clearly showed it can be done and that success was replicated in other places too. For shoebill you likely also need at least a tall enough aviary with fully-flighted birds that like each other, plenty of privacy and a dedicated keeper team... The problem is that without new imports from Africa it is likely doomed given the age of most of the current population...

It is a shame Al Wabra doesn't exist anymore, Tampa also changed its shoebill enclosure IIRC and Pairi Daiza now is just not the bird park it used to be anymore and they have significant trouble breeding many of their high profile birds....

Best news yet, Praha Zoo is having great breeding success with pangolin. What species are the pangolin exactly?

I do hope that Leipzig and other (future) zoos exhibiting the species will follow suit soon!
