Asian Elephants in Europe 2024

He’s settling in! I’ve heard that he’s been outside for a short while getting used to his enclosure.
Great to hear that Aung Bo has arrived already and is settling in (elephant database suggests that he moved 18/6/2024). Upthread it was stated that Anjan would be leaving Chester first meaning he would also have now departed from Chester, or is this not the case and his transfer isn't quite as far along as his father's (which wouldn't surprise me and would probably make sense)?

Probably a little misleading as I don't believe Anjan has left yet, let alone be crate trained! With discussions surrounding a new bull for Chester it's possible this was mixed up with Anjan leaving first prior to the arrival of a new bull which should be very soon imo (depending on whether Sundara is pregnant or not).

Thank you, this is what my thinking also was prior to the discussion on the previous page of this thread, and what my experience would lead to being the case, especially considering I hadn't heard anything formal about Anjan leaving previously (though of course it is/was always going to happen at some point).

In terms of the next breeding bull at Chester, I wouldn't have thought it would be an urgent matter considering it looks like Sundara is going to have had at least a 5 year gap between calves this time around (though maybe this was a decision made considering the deaths of Sithami and Thi that would have followed Sundara conceiving Riva rather than the normal), and Indali only turns 8 at the end of the year, so if it was to take until next year I don't think that would be a massive issue. However if Sundara isn't pregnant the arrival of a new bull should probably be prioritised more, but even if she is the arrival of a new breeding male is surely only good news.

If Sundara is pregnant, I doubt they would transfer a bull in soon as the bull wouldn't be able to be in with the main group until the calf is a little older. The bull would have little application in the meantime.

In Aung Bo's absence, Chester also now have the luxury to separate Anjan if required before he is also inevitably transferred. There was also talks of expanding/renovating the current bull enclosure and if that is the goal, there would be the time to do this before a new bull arrives.

Once again I completely agree, and these were my thoughts of the situation before I heard any rumours of Anjan leaving. If Sundara is pregnant, they don't presently NEED a new breeding bull, and remembering those talks of improving the bull facilities they can be worked (if it is still the plan to do so of course) on in the meantime if necessary and simultaneously provide a way for Anjan to be manoeuvred and separated from the rest of the herd as you say.

Indali is at the perfect age to have her first calf currently, but it wouldn't surprise me if the goal was to wait a few years so that Indali and Sundara could give birth around the same time. If they're doing 4-5 year birthing itervals for Sundara anyway, then they could even wait until Riva is at the ideal age to reproduce and aim for three calves close together.

Let's just hope Sundara is currently pregnant however we won't know until she gives birth. If she is let's hope it's another daughter although I'll be happy if it's healthy

Will all five females be bred to Aung Bo or is it likely Dina will not, both given her age and that she neglected to care for her last calf?
Priority will be to breed from Asha who will be approaching eight years since her last calf. I don't see why Dina won't be bred from again; especially as the younger two (Zinda and Avani) are perhaps still a little too young to breed. Asha and Samiya will be the two priority females though I imagine.

You are forgetting that the EEP needs to limit the number of Casa calves due to space restrictions. I am pretty sure Dina won’t have another calf because of that. Only the young females.

A new elephant bull will move to Eindhoven Zoo (formerly Dierenrijk) in September. The only thing that is mentioned is that he is from Emmen. So it seems very likely that will be Timber.

gee whiz. Then they will have to find another breeding bull to try for more females.
