The South African government has set out plans to end canned hunting and captive lion breeding - which then presents a problem of too many lions in situ. However there is no date for it.

Either way, Aspinall will indeed not help that issue by sending more lions to anywhere in that country.
It is not the Govt. but public pressure by private individuals and several NGO's. The one that should be singled out in this endeavour is the NGO Spots that by virtue of a very forcefull communicative fired-up lady and species Champion has managed to put the scandalous private lion parks' industry and canned hunting on the conservation agenda so the South African Govt. could no longer ignore it or wrap it under the carpet ....

Visited today for the first time.
Even though it was raining in the morning, all of the hoofstock species showed themselves.
Seeing Cape Buffalo for the first time since 2019 was an amazing experience considering how close up they came to the fenceline. I always thought some species of Buffalo (or even Wildebeest) would fit in so well at Whipsnade.
The Sables were active around midday which was massive highlight and the Kudu, Waterbuck, Red Lechwe and Sambar Deer were all hiding from the rain but I managed to photograph all of them.
Howlett's Bongos are the most active Bongos I have ever seen as they came really close and didn't mind the rain.
ZTL lists Howletts as having Roan Antelope and Brazilian Tapir but both were not signposted at all or on the map or on the website.
It was Dhole day today so a lot of attention around the Dhole exhibit, it was nice to see them feeding on carcasses.
Managed to see Serval, Sumatran Tiger, Lions and a handful of apes and monkey species.
Overall a really good day- hoofstock photography checklist up to 61 species so far this year.

Sad news. Guessing that only leaves two Chinese leopard in the UK now.

We just wanted to take a moment of your time to let you know that our dearest North Chinese leopard, Tingting has passed away at nearly 20 years old.

She arrived at Howletts in 2008, joining 2 year old Saian and just a couple years later she gave birth to two cubs, one of whom remained with her until the day she died.

She has always been such a huge personality, and certainly knew how to keep her keepers on their toes. She was like your shadow, always keeping an eye on you, always there, hoping you’d give into those big eyes and hand her an extra little snack.

She really was one of a kind and will be seriously missed by all!

If you have any memories of our north Chinese leopard family we would love to hear your stories and equally we would appreciate seeing any photos you have of her to help keep her legacy alive

We will continue to monitor Saian and Baiya following Tingtings' passing, as she has left a big void that no one can ever fill!
