Surabaya Zoo Surabaya Zoo News

Surabaya Zoo should have 3.3 Sumatran elephants.
Doa is supposedly born in 1969 and Lembang was born in 1990 in the wild and arrived in Surabaya Zoo from a Circus. The other wild born elephants all came from Way Kambas Elephant Training Center: M Doa and FF Gilir and Fitri.

Doa and Lembang had a previous calf in "Gonzalez", born in 2010. Why has it taken so long to have her second calf is not known. Apparently, there should be another captive-born male at the zoo which was born in Way Kambas Elephant Training Center.

@Rizz Carlton: If you have any further information on the Surabaya Zoo elephants that would be welcome!

I uploaded approximately 220 photos of the 37-acre/15-hectare Surabaya Zoo into the gallery. This older zoo is stocked with animals and there's a mixture of very good and abysmal exhibits. To have 8 huge Komodo Dragon enclosures is crazy, plus there's 7 Binturong exhibits, 5 Sun Bear exhibits, 4 Javan Rusa Deer exhibits with 200+ deer, 3 Pygmy Hippo exhibits, 3 Bornean Orangutan exhibits, and several double enclosures for animals such as Tigers, Lions, Agile Wallabies, Agile Gibbons, Siamangs and many other examples. There's even an Aquarium, Nocturnal House and Reptile Center all as a mini-zoo within the main zoo that requires an extra admission fee. One highlight is the Proboscis Monkey/Bawean Deer island jungle that's fantastic, plus there's apparently wild Proboscis Monkeys but I didn't see any during my visit.

Do you have a Zootierliste account? If yes, I'll appreciate you adding new species you saw throughout your Indonesian tours :)

I saw some empty exhibits in the Surabaya Zoo gallery. All I saw that there's a gorilla, a binturong and an orangutan statue in it. Rizz Carlton said they were left as is since they were old exhibits from before the 90s.

Like I said in one of the post, these exhibits are one of the site designated as a "historical site" of the zoo. The exhibit for Makua the western lowland gorilla is one of them with no plan of being filled with any animals.

Other sites include the older crocodile exhibits, the original management building, and a Dutch East Indies-era watchtower within the zoo.

Pity you missed the free ranging Proboscis Monkeys at historic Surabaya Zoo. They leave their Proboscis/Bawean island jungle by a rope or just jumping in the more quite hours, from about 3 pm onwards.
Being used to free ranging pea fowl or mara Proboscis at Surabaya Zoo are a VERY special experience!

Those are fantastic photos @Il gattopardo and having free-roaming Proboscis Monkeys is fantastic. I was already so impressed seeing them in two exhibits at Surabaya Zoo (one is with Bawean Deer) and so to see them roaming around in a visitor area would have been a dream!

I wonder how Surabaya maintained this free-roaming monkeys. I would guess they no longer have this from what I could tell, no? Especially since they had sent some of their large number of monkeys to places like Batu Secret Zoo a few years back.

I think the risk is having these monkeys ventured into risky areas (Other animals enclosures or well-hidden areas, risking escapees) as well as interactions with guests that would risk harming them or the monkeys.

As far as I know this situation of free-roaming Proboscis Monkeys on the zoo grounds exists already for quite some years. Have not heard of major problems so far. This might be due to the fact that the leaf-eating Proboscis Monkeys are not interested in the food that visitors eat. Quite different from Javan Monkeys I never saw Proboscis Monkeys approachting visitors. On the contrary: they keep a considerable safety distance to humans.
The photos were taken after a group of Proboscis Monkeys had left for Batu.

Surabaya Zoo houses a massive amout of species / individuals. It is no doubt the most successful breeder of Proboscis Monkey, Bawean Deer, Komodo Dragon.

Are there any data on how many offspring of these (and other) species are bred annually at Surabaya Zoo?

Of special interest are also the breeding successes of Malayan and Javan Binturong .

Surabaya Zoo is under scrutiny for allowing a one-year old Sumatran Elephant named Rocky to be ridden by its caretaker, an adult person.
