ZooParc de Beauval Zooparc de Beauval news 2024

A bit of news from Beauval, where I was yesterday with one of my daughters :
  • there's a third vulture species in the former Douc Langur outdoor aviary : the African White-backed Vulture, in addition to the Rüppell's and Eurasian Griffons ;
  • in the same aviary the Marabou Storks show signs of nesting (building of a platform), I strongly hope that this species will breed there in the near future, if not this year.

Beauval is breeding ex situ two species of endangered, endemic snails native to Desertas islands (small islands off the Portuguese coasts). I haven't got more information about the species nor the conservation programs that target them.
Both species are placed off-show, it's unlikely they will be displayed to the public because they are very small species, without any specific interest for the average visitor.

I went in Beauval yesterday, and I have a bit of news to notice :
  • various new babies, including 1 Barnacle Goose, 1 Javan Lutung and several Bolivian Squirrel Monkeys (the first ones for Beauval) ;
  • no more Four-eyed Fish in the South American vivarium of the Dome ;
  • the African and White-tailed Fish Eagles weren't displayed in the Bird Show, nor the Kookaburras (however I've seen the latter species in the backstage) ; there's new signage about Yellow-billed Storks near the arena, but I didn't see these birds in the show, I don't even know if they're actually displayed now.

Various births to be noticed (mainly birds) in early Summer : 2 Emperor Flat Lizards, 1 Crested Partridge, 3 Fulvous Whistling Ducks, 3 Mandarin Ducks, 1 Wood Duck, 3 Ringed Teals, 1 Red-crested Pochard, 4 Guira Cockoos, 3 Red-legged Seriemas, 2 White Storks, 1 Black-faced Ibis, 1 Hadada Ibis, 2 African Spoonbills, 1 Palm-nut Vulture, 4 Black Kites, 1 Moluccan Eclectus, 1 Barbary Monkey, 3 Southern Dwarf Mongooses, and 2 Red Pandas (these ones born on June 21st).

On June 21st too, the older Red Panda DARSHAN (born in 2023) has been transferred to Gelsenkirchen Zoo in Germany.

I was in Beauval on Monday with one of my daughters ; the weather was very hot, so we didn't stay long.

Not much to say about the animal news, but there are probably no more Rheas (signage removed) and the Capybara troop is down to 3 animals (2 adults and 1 young born in 2023) but it may be an underestimate (some animals may have been placed apart, especially if there are newborns as it often happens in summer).
In the main Vivarium the Northern Caiman Lizard has been replaced by a Green Anaconda in the largest aquaterrarium ; the latter species was displayed there for a long time in the past (2010s).
Near the Beauval Nature kiosk there's a new box that plays the calls of various ape species ; this device is loved by kids, including mine.

The endemic snails belong to the Discula lyelliana and Geomitra grabhami species, as reported in the Beauval Nature annual magazine.

As reported earlier this year there's an art exhibition themed on pandas in the Chinese Zone, it opened yesterday and will remain till Aug. 8th (a very lucky date in Chinese culture, probably the luckiest in the year).

On a more sad tone, the breeder Reticulated Giraffe male MOMO (aka MISTRAL) passed away a few days ago. He suffered from incurable urethral stones. Now the Giraffe herd of Beauval is entirely feminine (adults + 2 juveniles born last year).

Various births have been noticed in Beauval in the mid-Summer : 4 Southern Screamers, 3 Ringed Teals, 7 Blue-winged Teals, 1 Nicobar Pigeon, 1 Goodfellow's Tree Kangaroo, 2 Bolivian Squirrel Monkeys, 2 Domestic Goats...

Also some news about the small carnivores :
  • 7.0 Meerkats have been transferred to an (unspecified) Irish zoo ; the remaining individuals of both groups swaped their enclosures (respectively near the Lions and the Giraffe/White Rhino plain) ;
  • among the Asian Small-clawed Otters, two young males have first left the "main" enclosure to go in the Binturong exhibit during last Spring, then one of them (SUMO) has been transferred to Pessac Zoo, while the remaining male (LIAO) has been joined by the young female NASURA from the "Parc d'Isle Zoo" in Northern France. The "main" otter enclosure hosts now a breeding pair plus 3 of their daughters.
