Zoo/Aquarium Hot Takes

The Memphis Zoo calls themselves "The Hippo Capital of the World" because of their "record" 38 births when the Royal Artis Zoo has nearly double that with 69 Nile Hippo births (though they don't have hippos anymore) and also several other zoos have had 40+ births, like Leipzig, which has 50.

Does that really surprise you, given the quintessential stereotype of Americans being completely unaware of / ignoring the rest of the world? ;)

You do live up to your name:D

It's surprising how little most zoos know about each other/communicate with each other still in the digital era where information travels at the speed of light (sometimes literally depending on your cable connection)

I suspect they often know, but just don't care, the general public isn't going to find out anyway that Omaha's desert dome isn't the world largest indoor desert or that its aquarium isn't the largest aquarium inside a zoo. So why not use some marketing lies to your advantage....

I don't really see an issue with these types of claims.

What defines "The Hippo Capital of the World"? It is an entirely subjective claim.
Also the record 38 births could still be a record for the USA or North America. If it helps them get a few more visits out of locals or others visiting Memphis that is that really a bad thing?

The number of people who know that Artis or Leipzig have had more hippo births is going to be tiny and they would need to be big enough zoo nerds that it wouldn't stop them going anyway.

The root of the claim is lies, can you trust someone who builds their reputation off of lies?
Even a charity? A lying zoo these days is not safe either.

On the matter of "Capital of X species is entirely subjective" I do agree, but if they claim to be hippo capital based solely on breeding then they don't even beat that, let alone the habitat, there's far more superior designs over theirs.

"Largest indoor desert" has always been a bizarre claim to me. It doesn't rain inside, so aren't all indoors deserts?

The new believed tortoise yards are for donkeys and probably other domestics, I just have a feeling detroit will probably remove stingrays and bush dogs from their plans. I would love to be wrong though.
I thought someone reported a volunteer saying the donkeys were likely only temporary? Unless you’ve since learned something that contradicts that?

They seem to be temporary but I think the habitat is too. It is a standard store bought fence. The donkeys are planned to be in kid zone.

It’s unnecessary when zoos with a single aquarium building on their campus (like Toledo) add aquarium to their park’s official name.

What aquariums do you see as average? How many gallons defines an average aquarium
Numbers of gallons is not a good measure of aquarium quality. Most aquariums (at least in the US) are crappy tiny facilities that are not really worth visiting. SeaQuest, Blue Zoo, lower-end Sea Life, and some crappy standalone places. Toledo's aquarium definitely beats those.

I'm not saying gallons is the only way an aquarium can be ranked. The Dallas World Aquarium has barely more gallons than KCs new aquarium. But that being said immersion and species are crucial too, while Toledo has some neat species such as the spotted eagle ray, stone fish, leopard shark, etc. There is very little immersion and it is very bare bones.
