What animal would you instantly have if it became legal in your country?

As the title suggests, what animal would you instantly have if it became legal in your state? (Perhaps one within reason and one crazy one like lions or elephants etc)

I live in Australia and it’s illegal for us to have tortoise as pets, so I’m always jealous when tortoise owner pages pop up on my Facebook! I don’t have a particular species in mind but I do absolutely go giddy over any tortoise I see in the zoo.

If it was me, my realistic choice would be (very similar to you) an Aldabra Giant Tortoise - their calm demeanor and gentle nature makes them seem like really lovable animals.

Unrealistically, I'd love to be able to keep a Brazilian tapir. Something about them just makes them rather adorable, and, from what I've heard from keepers that have gotten to work with them, they are really friendly, and love a good belly rub, much like a big dog :D

About the Tapir, Gerald Durrel had one escape before, and it took him a long time to catch it in the pouring rain. The Little bugger was so slippery, it essentially dragged the search party around.
 
If tigers became legal, I would want my own guard tiger, no one would try to break into my house if I had one. No, just kidding.

Let’s say if it was legal to keep antelope, that would be nice on a big paddock or meadow. It would be something unique. Imagine having a herd of impala or springbok.
