Asian Elephants in Europe 2024

A new elephant bull will move to Eindhoven Zoo (formerly Dierenrijk) in September. The only thing that is mentioned is that he is from Emmen. So it seems very likely that will be Timber.
It's now officially confirmed that Timber will move from Emmen to Eindhoven Zoo later this year. It is not yet known which bull will move to Emmen after that. Emmen hopes not to be without a bull for too long and that a new bull will arrive a few days after Timber's move.

Sadly, 7-year-old Zinda also died of EEHV at Dublin Zoo this evening.

Absolutely devastating for Dublin and their herd, you really can't make this up. They were in such a great position with their herd with possibly 3-5 breeding cows over the next few years following the arrival of the impressive and proven bull Aung Bo from Chester but now EEHV has wreaked through their herd as a cruel reminder of the damage it can cause.
If anyone really needed that...
Thoughts go out to their keepers and those close to the herd.

Its awful to loose ANY animal to eehv, but two young cows right at the beginning of their reproductive future is just another harsh blow. They are almost back to square one now with three (maybe only two if Dina isn't breeding) cows.

Although tragic to loose two young females right at the beginning of their reproductive future will cause the EPP and the zoo to consider breeding from Dina again she is still young enough that she can have at least 2-3 more calves.

Eehv is a terrible thing. Dublin has three breeding cows: Asha, Samiya and Bernardine if she can breed again. Hopefully things will be better next time.

Emmen: what bull does anyone like to see moved there? Hopefully he will shoot only female sperm that the zoo needs. (It’s the father that determines the sex).

Are there any bulls in Europe that have thrown more female offspring?

Aung Bo is one so far, albeit with a smaller sample size.

But from what I've seen, it's usually either fairly even with a one or two break either way or a heavily favour towards males.

Also, very sad to hear of Zinda's passing. Dublin are in a unique position now with three adult cows; do they choose to breed from Dina again, or just elect to continue with her daughters, Asha and Samiya of whom could still establish the herd quite well considering their still fairly young ages.

I do wonder if its worth the risk to breed Dina again. She did neglect to care for Avani after she was born and hand-reared calves are tough survival gambles. Asha and Samiya, if bred in short intervals, could easily bump the numbers up again. Im sure any surplus males would make their way to the US or Australia as well as they've done with previous animals.

I wouldn't be surprised if Dublin do indeed elect to just breed from Asha and Samiya; both females are relatively young and could still have more than two decades of breeding ahead of them. Breeding at natural intervals (three to four years) will be the intention either way.

I doubt Australia will want to import any more bulls considering they've already imported two bulls, and the same may go for the US who have the two bulls and their two mothers.

Breeding Asian elephants at natural birth intervals is no longer the goal of the EEP, though. Due to a lack of space, each female is supposed to have only 3 calves and the calving intervals are supposed to be 6-7 years. However, exceptions are possible if it’s necessary to safe a matrilineal from extinction, or for genetically reasons.

in that case, Emmen is in trouble because they have no matrilineal formed! Depending on one female is pointless when they need every chance they could get.

I know we don’t want a surplus of males but we are seeing more bachelor herds now.

The only female allowed to have more calves under the new guidelines is Swe Zin. But maybe they could get a permit for Ma Ya Yee too since the herd really needs all opportunities it can get to finally get female calves.

Despite having a raising number of bull groups, there are still not enough places for bulls. Especially places for adult non-breeding bulls are scarce.

Some upcoming changes for the Asian elephants at Pairi Daiza:

- The 6-year-old bull Ta Wan will move to Augsburg Zoo on July 18. There he will be joined by 12-year-old Assam from Zoo Antwerp.

- 49-year-old cow Jana and 48-year-old cow Praya will soon move to new zoo in Casablanca, Morocco.

- 13-year-old cow Soraya is pregnant. The calf is expected in the second half of 2025.

Emmen: what bull does anyone like to see moved there? Hopefully he will shoot only female sperm that the zoo needs. (It’s the father that determines the sex).

is it really only depending on the father's side?
is there not a common condition giving a possibility of gender? is there no female input giving the possibility of gender?

Pairi Daiza wrote answer to a person that they will keep 15 elephants after the moving of Ta Wan, Jana and Praya. (16 later in 2025 after the birth of Soraya's baby.) So, I guess Chamundi stays or will go to another place later. (Since the facebook post also doesn't mention his moving.) It looks it is cancelled.
