Private aviculture in Japan

Hello, I just wanted to know what the situation of private aviculture is in Japan. Not much posts here explain about it, but it seems that finches are very commonly kept, with the population of Gouldian finches exceeding that of public zoos in Japan. I also know that there are a variety of parrot and owl species being kept by bird cafes, especially this one called Torino Iru Cafe. If anyone knows anything about private aviculture on this island country, feel free to share.

I've seen a keel billed toucan in the pet industry about 5 years ago, so it may be still in the trade, but in fewer numbers. The Toco Toucan is more common, and is available in the market though rare.

Regarding the websites, the first link is so called "pet information website" that shown information about the whole industry. I believe the list on the website may not completely be up to date, but good enough to get an idea of the industry.

The second link is ペットのコジマ, which is one of the largest pet chain stores in Japan. This list looks like up to date, and has links to actual individuals on sale around Japan.

If you are referring to the toucan in the first link then it is either a Choco or a yellow-throated toucan, not a keel-billed toucan.

I did see an import of red-breasted toucans a few years back. There might be an animal cafe or two that might have this species.

I see, when I translated it was named a keel billed toucan. According to news, the last keel billed toucan in Japan was an individual at Omoriyama Zoo that died a few years ago.

I also have seen this trend where some importwrs seem to just sell animals immediately rather than keeping them in an attempt to properly breed them. Two examples that come to mind are a certain bird cafe that also acts a broker which sold a red legged seriema and purple crested turaco to a Moff brand petting zoo and Kakegawa bird garden respectively.

Yes, unfortunately there are.

I think I can say this especially with raptors. Private breeders and pet dealers keep and breed various species that public zoos do not have.

Brahminy Kite, White Bellied Sea Eagle and Morepork are just to name a few.

I think it depends on the situation.
Some vendors import animals based on orders, so they just sell it to customers directy after import and quarantine,

I've seen cases ahere the importer bred the animals and sold the offsprings too.

Sorry, my way of saying might have been a little misleading.
I meant that there must be at least a few individuals since it is likely that they are breeding domestically. However, I don't have an idea how many there are in private collections, since not all vendors make it open that they own the species.

If you are referring to the Tori Cafe Sendagi Moff Lalaport Tougou I am under the impression that the seriamas there are the same individual sold to Moff by Tori Cafe. The moment Moff had theirs the animal in Sendagi was gone.

Moff has posted a picture of the seriema as recent as May 25 on instagram.

Edit: after looking on twitter I found out that the animal from Tori Cafe Sendagi/Asakusa is in fact the same individual in Moff. The animal has a ring on its right leg. It got sold/transferred to Moff at early 2021
