Australasian African Wild Dog Population

A little info about the 4 brothers that were born in Dvur Kralove, went to Sydney zoo and later to Altina.

They were all born in January 2018 (around 12th of January but I´m unsure on exact date). The litter had 4 males and 7 females. Mother of the litter was Fiona - born in Bioparco di Roma in 2012. Father is unlear to me - because Fiona lived with two mates long term (full brothers) called Jezevcik and Dedek - born in Zoo de Cerza.

Thank you

thank you, yes I think historical issue with number in this case. Known 4 older 2;2 (confirmed who) and 4 younger siblings confirmed number 2:2 but not name. I’m still waiting on hopeful information via a source. Thank you
Hi sadly Monarto safari park update on numbers 4.3.0 loss of Penda (adult female) march 2024

Hi sadly Monarto safari park update on numbers 4.3.0 loss of Penda (adult female) march 2024

Thanks for that. This leaves Monarto with the following:

0.1 Bulu (14/01/2016) Jengo x Kibi (Monarto)
1.0 Baraka (21/04/2017) Hasani x Kisuri (Perth)
1.0 Onika (21/04/2017) Hasani x Kisuri (Perth)
1.0 Masikio (27/04/2021) Baraka x Bulu (Monarto)
0.1 Ajani (27/04/2021) Baraka x Bulu (Monarto)
0.1 Amani (27/04/2021) Baraka x Bulu (Monarto)
0.1 Sanaa (27/04/2021) Baraka x Bulu (Monarto)

Monarto will presumably hold a non-breeding pack into the future; at least until the older dogs pass. From there, they can transfer out the young male if desired and bring in 2-4 males to pair with the three females. They have at least 2-3 good reproductive years in them.

Opps should have read 3.4.0. ‍♀️ Numbers typo

Can you please be certain of what you’re reporting before posting as we’ve had a number of contradicting reports about Monarto’s pack throughout this thread now. It leaves me with little confidence of what’s true and what’s false.

I will contact the zoo to confirm what they hold to make sure this thread has accurate and up to date info.

Monarto's website actually states they currently have seven individuals (Penda isn't listed anymore).

Meet our playful African Painted Dogs at Monarto Safari Park

Yes, it appears Penda has passed. We just need confirmation from Monarto on the gender of their pups, which was initially reported by the zoo as 2.4. Masikio and Jasiri were the males, with Jasiri now deceased.

Whether Amani is a female (as previously reported) or male (possibly misexed) remains the point of contention; with the pack containing three of each gender minimum, with Amani then added to either males or females.

Yes exactly. And I’m so sorry I was working from two conflicting but direct pieces of information sources as in not hear say . Thank you

Romeo (2012-2024)

Hamilton Zoo have today announced their last African wild dog, Romeo, will be farewelled tomorrow around noon.

Very sad news, but by no means unexpected. He was 12 years old, which is a phenomenal age only attained by one other African wild dog at Hamilton Zoo to date.

I visited Hamilton Zoo on Saturday, but sadly didn’t see Romeo. I attributed this to the bad weather as he’s usually active on brighter days.

This represents a phase out of the species by Hamilton Zoo after 21 years of keeping African wild dogs since the arrival of the first three dogs in 2003.

Yes sad but not surprising news. Thank you for the update

The species will be a great loss to the zoo. Despite setbacks over the past 10-15 years in their attempts to breed from them, Hamilton Zoo once had a thriving breeding pack.

With Hamilton Zoo phasing the species out; Wellington having phased out in 2014; and Orana Wildlife Park reduced to four ageing dogs, it’ll be interesting to see what future direction the New Zealand population takes i.e. whether Orana similarly phase out (especially as regional interest in Spotted hyena grows).

When/where was the last litter of Wild Dogs born in the region? Seems like a while, and more and more zoos seem to be phasing them out.
I love the recent region-wide support Hyenas have been receiving but I do worry wild dogs are starting to be neglected as a consequently

The last litter was born January 2023 at Altina:

1.0 Kasigo (10/01/2023) Adrian x Rita (Altina)
1.0 Jumaane (10/01/2023) Adrian x Rita (Altina)
1.0 Shujaa (10/01/2023) Adrian x Rita (Altina)
1.0 T’Challa (10/01/2023) Adrian x Rita (Altina)

Prior to that, the last surviving litters were born March and April 2021 at Perth and Monarto respectively.

I agree with you and it wouldn’t surprise me if Orana followed suit of Hamilton in phasing the species out (replacing them with hyena). This is speculation to be clear, not confirmation of their intention; but the fact remains Wellington, Melbourne and now Hamilton have all phased out.
