South Lakes Wild Animal Park South Lakes Safari Zoo council visit

I never did get why there's only one wildebeest and nyala, while I didn't expect this to be brought up as a new licence condition, it's good that this is actually being addressed. The question is would it be better for the zoo to actually get in more wildebeest and nyala, or just re-home the two animals.
I think they should rehome them rather than add to them. I think perhaps losing species is preferable at this juncture.

Or shoot them maybe, if no other zoo wants them?
If the time written into the licence condition is short, then it might not be possible to re-home them before this expires.
It is not likely that the zoo would want to risk closure because of their continued presence.

Another condition has been added during a council meeting on July 22nd.
The zoo must have a closure plan in place within 3 months of the meeting to ensure " continued compliance with the zoo licencing act".The closure plan must also include a detailed animal stock list of animals moving to the new site as well as those the zoo licencing holder is not planning on moving to the new site. The current lease expires May2027.
So, are they planning on running two sites?

The new site is NOT A ZOO. Will not be a zoo, and will not allow public access. It will be purely for booking to stay there, but they MAY offer guided tours at some stage. The exhibits are not going to be Port Lympne style lodges, simply holiday cottages around the areas of where animals live. There are already lots of rare breeds up there, and they plan to add Rhino soon. If they wish to continue having a zoo, it would have to be South Lakes, but I expect, it's been made clear to them, their lease is not going to be extended, so that is why so much has left, and I would imagine, there will come a time, they either close the zoo prior to rehoming the animals, or if they plan to continue South Lakes, it will be a smaller zoo. When I visited last week, it very much did feel on phase out, loads of enclosures had way less animals than before and it felt kind of empty. There was also a near full phase out of birds already at the site. I don't know what is planned to move to Tebay bar Rhino, but based on the direction of the zoo, I don't see how they can long term continue to run the current site as it is starting to empty of animals already.

Do you know when the current lease expires?

Given the fact that you have a track record for posting misinformation with just as much repeated vehemence about your accuracy (for instance, your claims that Chester would be opening an exhibit complex for all eight species of bear, that Hemsley had received a breeding pair of Eastern Aardwolf from a private source nobody but you knew about and that they were unconnected to the population imported by Todd Dalton, and that Dartmoor Zoo were importing orangutans with the intention of teaching them BSL and using them in encounter experiences with deaf children) I think you can *probably* understand why people are unwilling to merely take your word for it here!

You may turn out to be correct this time, or alternatively those who have heard differently may prove to be correct - or indeed circumstances may change and neither scenario will come to pass. Time will presumably tell! :D:p

So is South Lakes eventually going to close permanently and rehome all the animals from there?

Based on what's been said, it seems the zoo will close either in or some time before 2027 when the lease ends, and at least some of their animals will be moved up to a new site they're developing in Tebay. The current owners of South Lakes also run the Brockholes Farm holiday cottages in Tebay, and the new site will be close to that.

Probably not a good idea with McKenna's horrible lot already breathing down their necks.
Maybe not... but then they risk being closed by their Local Authority who have no other legal option, if the 'directive' has a tight time limit. Breach of such directives requires closure or part closure of the zoo.

Where did @Alwaysevergreen say all this?

do they own any other zoos in the cumbria area ?
As far as I can tell, no they don't, they just have South Lakes and the above mentioned Brockholes Farm (which also does animal encounters with sheep and cows as part of the holiday cottage experience). It seems Cumbrua Zoo Company Ltd. were established in 2016 or 2017, for the primary purpose of taking the zoo away from David Gill and attempting to right the ship.

They recently stated on their FB page regarding the transfers of some White Rhinos, that one of them was held up or may have even been cancelled due to 'a dispute over ownership'. Is this anything to do with Gill,do you think or is it another zoo perhaps?

A short, positive update. A senior councillor for Westmorland and Furness Council said that the zoo was responding constructively to the directions and conditions that the council has given the zoo. However, the council would continue to monitor from an environmental health and licensing prospective.
