Chester Zoo Chester Zoo News 2024

I think they were looking for a new male.
We have a breeding mare in Azita (b. ...) and new stallion foal Jasper (b. 2024). So, failing another 1.4 individuals ... right!?

What is the current sex / age ratio like within this herd? A few months back it was 1.5 (with 1 birth ..., probably not included the latest one).

What about a new male? Where did they find the new one ...?

Chester Zoo seems to be the only onager herd in the UK left. Of course, never numerous ..., just without a shred of a doubt a bit too dramatic by half.

A few of minor observations from a brief visit yesterday morning: at least one Visayan Warty Piglet was visible, which I don't think has been mentioned here yet; the Sun Skinks in the Monsoon Forest have bred and a juvenile was showing well near the entrance; a female wild Tufted Duck has hatched three ducklings on the small round island in the Chimp moat; a new fish species has been added to the Gharial pool in Monsoon Forest and although the ones I saw were small and some distance from the glass they appeared to be some form of Panchax.

@Jambo has kindly compiled a list of Chester’s chimpanzees in this thread too for reference:

Chimpanzees in Europe
Any idea how many chimps the zoo has had over its time being open? And who were the very first group of chimps to arrive?

The first was a female named Phyllis who arrived in 1942. She passed in 1945. Another female, Topsy, arrived in 1948 before passing in 1958.

In 1950 the first so called 'group' arrived; males, Elmer, Simon and Solomon and females, Meg and Babu. The first offspring born at Chester in 1956 were from those two females.

Chester have confirmed via Instagram that they have successfully bred Banggai Cardinalfish in the Aquarium.

I’ve just read that the Aquarium will be closing in 2025 after 70 years due to the building coming to the end of its serviceable life, with some species being relocated but others leaving the collection. Such a shame to lose such an iconic part of the zoo. Does anyone think the building will be kept?
