Good news from Valencia Tooth has been breeding with the females hopefully Valencia will have multiple calves running around in 2 years' time
Primeras cópulas del macho de elefante de BIOPARC Valencia
Really hopeful signs coming out of Bioparc Valencia. I would assume that all cows with no rattending calves are the focus of the breeding program (allthough, I would expect the oldest cow Matla who calved in 2022 may re-breed with Tooth in the not too distant future.
Any local Zoochatters know which cows have been mated by Tooth at all?
The herd members at Bioparc Valencia:
ADULTS:
1.0 Tooth (b. 1992, Kruger NP, South Africa)
0.1 Matla (b. 2000, Namibia)
0.1 Muti (b. 2001, Namibia)
0.1 Metzi (b. 2003, Namibia)
0.1 Miri (b. 2003, Namibia)
0.1 Maya (b. 2004, Namibia)
0.1 Manti (b. 2005, Namibia)
CALVES:
0.1 Makena (b. 9/11/2022 U x Matla)
1.0 Malik (b. 14/3/2024 U x Maya)
NOTA BENE:
This just goes to show that the episode at Rhenen-Ouwehand where their only breeding cow Duna did not accept Tooth's advances - while he had mated her successfully a few years before and she calved in 2021 as a result - was something of a fluke and freak aberration. I do hope before long and fast Rhenen-Ouwehand may get a new (proven) bull elephant for the reproductive cows here.
