African Elephants in Europe 2024

Probably later this year, 43-year-old elephant cow Ingha will move from Zoo d'Amnéville to Safari Park Dvur Kralove. The intention is that she will keep the cow Drumbo company there. It was previously planned that an older cow from Ouwehands Dierenpark would move to Dvur Kralove, but in the animal's interest it was decided to refrain from doing so.

Really hopeful signs coming out of Bioparc Valencia. I would assume that all cows with no rattending calves are the focus of the breeding program (allthough, I would expect the oldest cow Matla who calved in 2022 may re-breed with Tooth in the not too distant future.

Any local Zoochatters know which cows have been mated by Tooth at all?

NOTA BENE:
This just goes to show that the episode at Rhenen-Ouwehand where their only breeding cow Duna did not accept Tooth's advances - while he had mated her successfully a few years before and she calved in 2021 as a result - was something of a fluke and freak aberration. I do hope before long and fast Rhenen-Ouwehand may get a new (proven) bull elephant for the reproductive cows here.

Tooth and Duna never got along very well. The father of her calf Bumi is the late Tusker. Duna is by the way the only reproductive cow in Ouwehands.

The only (African) elephant left here is Niko (b. 3/6/1997 Ramat-Gan / Tel Aviv Safari Park)

Yes, You are right. It was Tusker.... I wish they could bring him back ... alas he rather unexpectedly died from Mycobacterium tuberculosis at Basel Zoo in August 2023).

Interesting indeed. Niko genetically is not really too interesting for a breeding situation given that he has three full brothers and three half brothers in a potential breeding situation. I can well imagine a small bachelor group over there

Also it maybe worth considering any cows mated by Jambo before he departed (which probably wouldn't include Matla or Maya), as these if pregnant would probably be due a matter of months before any successfully mated by Tooth from between is arrival to now.

Jambo at the moment more interested in Kimani who is not fertile yet.

For la Flèche, no. The Zoo considers that the facility is no longer suitable for elephants. So if the zoo wants new elephants (which is not sure) it must build a new facility... The last plans for the african extension didn't include a such thing but who knows for the future.

For Amneville, don't know unfortunately.
 
At Aalborg Zoo, the two elderly African elephant cows Tanja and Mai have died. Matriarch Tanja's health had been deteriorating for some time. She was thoroughly examined and had several treatments, but without success. It was therefore decided to put her to sleep. Mai too had health problems. A combination of these health problems and the fact that she would otherwise be left alone in the zoo meant the decision to euthanise Mai as well. There are now no more elephants at Aalborg Zoo.

I was wondering who is the father of Makena and Malik from Valencia? A bull from another zoo or a wild male? I know that the females were artificially inseminated.

Aalborg is not getting any more elephants, the current exhibit is not up to todays standards and they don't have the space for an expansion. They had known for quite a while that Tanja and Mai would be the last.
