Tennōji Zoo Osaka Zoo News

So I seem to have missed over some news. The area where the peasantry row and chimpanzees is under construction. Which is why the chimps and pheasanty birds have moved to new enclosures.

This is the enclosure the chimpanzees are subjected to. They moved near where the petting area used to be.

The birds moved near the multi purpose square. Here’s a blog entry from the zoo showing parts of the exhibit area:

『鳥のセカイ』オープンしました!
Is this a quarantaine area? Do you or any other Japan(ese) fora ZooChat poster know what is happening in the construction area?

I suppose crammed conditions, concrete and city environs small layout is where some of the major city zoos in Japan still need to make an evolution to more acceptable state of the art modern zoo exhibitry. I am not so surprised ..., but sure it ain't too nice.

Do you think the zoo will get more kiwis?
In the previous collection plan, kiwi was set for phase-out, but the zoo has partially revised the plan and is now working to reintroduce kiwi as a symbol of Tennoji Zoo. To the best of my knowledge, the most recent update was from two years ago, when a hearing was held with the ISB coordinator. Given kiwi was the most popular species at Tennoji Zoo and held symbolic significance, I hope they will refurbish the exhibit and bring kiwi back once they have a better display. Public awareness of kiwi in Japan has significantly increased in recent years, and Japanese people seem to have a relatively high level of recognition compared to other countries. The announcement of the death of the kiwi in July this year received 70,000 reactions on Twitter. I believe their exhibition in Japan has a substantial impact on conservation education and outreach.

It seems like we may be very well getting kiwi back again. If anybody can find the email of the zoo or organisations related heavily to the zoo, please do comment.

If I may ask, what was discussing during the hearing between the zoo and the ISB coordinator? Also are there any links or videos discussing about Tennoji's plan to rework kiwi into a symbol of the zoo?

According to Veno, the zoo is in the process of finding new kiwis. He translated a document which I’m not sure was written before or after Pukunui’s death.
Here is the translated document:
“In the review of this collection plan, the kiwi was designated as a symbolic animal for our zoo, as Tennoji Zoo is the only place in the country that keeps it, and it is also an endangered species. Additionally, for this kiwi, we have started the process of introducing new individuals, including hearing from species coordinators at the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA).”

@Veno and to all of you, based off all of the information we have right now, what is the possibility of kiwi coming back to Tennoji? If you don't remember, the zoo was under scrutiny for a small kiwi exhibit and the article from Veno dated back to 2022. To be honest, I believe it all depends on the zoo's collection plan, which I don't know if it's still the same as it was back in 2022.

Since my email didn’t go through, I decided to call the zoo for a price. One of the higher ups in the zoo answered me and he said that the zoo is trying to get kiwis, but as of now it is very difficult to obtain them due to permits and the like. He also said it’ll most likely take a couple of years to obtain another one.

Kiwi update: The zoo is currently under discussion whether or not to import another kiwi. The zoo also confirms that kiwi is a symbolic animal to them. There are also plans to renovate the kiwi enclosure if the decision to import another goes through. I will be back with another update once the zoo has finalized their decision.
Also, for drill, the zoo will most likely not get another drill after the last one dies.
