Chimpanzees in Europe

Maja in Ostrava has a male baby born last year.

My had her first baby born last month but it died soon after.

What year was Lone born?

(BTW Ostrava is in the Czech republic, not Turkey)

Oops, thank you for the correction, not sure how that mistake ended up happening!

And thanks for the update on My and Maja.

Lone was born 14.08.1995.

Full overview of the chimpanzees who used to be in Aalborg from the original list
Dorte (0.1) 1967 - has passed away
Jutta (0.1) 1974 - has passed away
Martin (1.0) 1989 (Mom: Dorte) - ?
Laura (0.1) 14.09.1994 (mom: Jutta) - Burgers Zoo
Lone (0.1) 14.08.1995 (mom: Dorte) - Ostrava Zoo
Sebastian (1.0) 31.01.2007 (mom: Dorte) - Walter Zoo
Maja (0.1) 07.02.2007 (mom: Laura) - Ostrava Zoo
My (0.1) 06.09.2012 (mom: Jutta) - Ostrava Zoo

I also forgot to mention in my earlier post that I'm unsure what happened to Martin, but I know he was pretty sick back in 2017 and might unfortunately have passed away from complications from that. Danish Zoo's rarely announce when animals have passed away but if they suddenly dissapear it often seems to be the case.

Lone was born 14.08.1995.

I think that Lone was sent to Zoo Liberec (a non-breeding small group of 1,2 old animals) last year.

To clarify. Both Ostrava and Liberec has decided to no longer announce names of their animals to general public. So when they announce a birth or death or transfer, it´s hard to tell the identity of the animal in many cases and track it forward.

Last year, Liberec received a 28-years old verus-female from Ostrava (which I think is Lone). She repeatedly refused to take care of her infants after birth so EEP coordinator has decided to retire her from breeding program.

I only know for the Copenhagen chimpanzees sadly, but have been planning to ask Odense Zoo about theirs. I think Knaus was born around 26.10.2010 though, I'll update if they give me an answer! Since my last post did find out that in Odense that Svabba and Nikoline are hybrids and the other 3 are western chimpanzees.
According to the 2014 studbook, these are the date of births of the chimps at Odense:

0,1 Amanda, 01-11-1992 (Frits x Diana)
0,1 Franka, 06-12-1992 (Frits x Louise)
0,1 Nikoline, 16-07-2002 (Peer x Franka)
1,0 Svabba, 22-06-2003 (Peer x Agneta)
1,0 Knauss, 25-10-2010 (Frederik x Agneta)

Thank you so much! Odense still hasn't answered my mail. Do you know when Agnete was born? And also where the studbook is available, I haven't been able to find it.

I downloaded the studbook via here: European studbook 2014 - PDF Free Download

I wouldn't pay too much attention to the subspecies. There have been new improved tests in subsequent years so the subspecies in this 2014 studbook are not always correct.

Does anybody can write me please which zoos still keep the subspecies in Europe:

• Central chimpanzee (P. t. troglodytes)

• Eastern chimpanzee (P. t. schweinfurthii)

• Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzee (P. t. ellioti)

I usually see in the zoos Westafrican chimpanzees and hybrids. I would like to visit/see other subspecies too.

Twycross keep a single female P.t. schweinfurthii called ‘Samantha’ both of her children were hybrids (0.1 DNS) while the other ‘Peter’ lives in Blair Drummond.

Of the Central chimpanzee (P. t. troglodytes), there are a number of breeding groups in Europe. For example, a large part of the group at Safari Park Dvur Kralove is Central chimpanzees, and the same applies to the groups at Zoo Plzen and Zoo de La Palmyre, among others. Furthermore, some individuals can also be found in the groups at Zoo Antwerpen and Tierpark Hellabrunn, for example.

There are not very many Eastern chimpanzees (P. t. schweinfurthii) in Europe. The entire group in Pakawi Park consists of Eastern chimpanzees. Furthermore, individuals can be found in the groups of Artis, Leipzig and Twycross, for example.

According to Zootierliste, there is only one male of the Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzee (P. t. ellioti) in Europe at Leintalzoo in Germany.

Thank You for the answer!
Do you know which individuals Dvúr Kralove, Plzen and Laa Palmyre have nowadays?
I knew the the chimps from Veszprém moved to D.K. some years ago but I don't know are they still living or not.

Who knows how was that chimpanzee in little Leintal zoo assigned to Nigerian-Cameroon subspecies ellioti?

ZTL showed ellioti chimps in the past, for example 2 females at Monkey World, but they no longer show as this subspecies neither current or former keeper.

I am a big enthusiast of genotyping all pure subspecies chimps of breeding age and creating self-sustaining breeding groups of central, eastern and if they exist in human care, Nigerian-Cameroon chimpanzees. This may involve swapping zoo chimps between Europe, America, Africa and Asia. In 10 or 20 years, zoos will congratulate themselves for a foresight in another endangered species. Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzees are already rarer in the wild than Sumatran and Bornean orangutans, and other subspecies are also declining fast.

I would concur that all confiscated chimpanzee forthwith and also those already in sanctuaries are all genotyped and chimpanzees relocated either to existing functional breeding programmes or integrated into African Great Ape sanctuaries with a view to either ex situ conservation breeding and/or release of rehabilated groups to the wildlands only with the correct subspecies in mind when releasing in any area of Tropical Africa.
