My first thought was Rhenen. There 6 gorillas there. It is the biggest male group. So, he could be male Bou (2011), or male Koundi (2016) but less probable.

I was just about to post this. I hope another female takes over the care of Makongo. If not I hope they do an adapted form of hand rearing. And don't go for the standard full hand rearing.25-year-old gorilla female Tamidol at GaiaZOO died on August 12. She had not been fit for some time and did not recover despite several treatments from the vet. Last week, she no longer wanted to eat and could hardly walk. It was therefore decided to euthanise her. Examination revealed that she had multiple abscesses in her liver and brain that were progressively multiplying.
An attempt is now being made to place her young born in April this year with another female in the group, as he is still dependent on a mother.

I think they must have been preparing for this as Tamidol was euthanased rather than a sudden or surprise death. I've heard the old female Dalila is being encouraged to adopt the baby but whether it will be successful or not is still not known.I was just about to post this. Slowly, gorilla female Dalila has taken over the care of Makongo. The keepers do feed him because he still depends on milk. But outside those feeding times, he is with the rest of the gorillas.25-year-old gorilla female Tamidol at GaiaZOO died on August 12. This is Nyuki's first offspring. Because of his poor social background I (along with others) suspected that the young male 8 year old Kibao might really be the father, but apparently he is castrated, so cannot be.At Zoo de La Palmyre, female gorilla Ybana had a baby in early August. It is a female. Father is Nyuki.

He was probably castrated as there are too many males in the zoos, and few are needed for breeding. So only a few will be allowed to breed and there are certainly others that are genetically more important. Good for Kibao, now he can stay in his family group. Why was kibao castrated? His father belongs to a relatively underrepresented lineage and he does not come from a consanguineous relationship.
These are both good moves. At least Shomari will have some company again. I have heard the new baby in Apenheul(mother M'Fugaji) is female. The 17-year-old gorilla male Nasibu will move from Pairi Daiza to Fasano in Italy on October 28.
At Pairi Daiza, male Shomari will then live with females Uzuri and Gasira. Although there will still be no breeding then.

Another sad day.... Unfortunately there is a two year old in the group which will no doubt delay a replacement. The 33-year-old silverback Malabo has died at Zoo Madrid. He died of a rapidly progressing malignant tumour.
