Chester Zoo Stories from the zoo

You can work alone with big cats (along with other dangerous animals as it happens), slides may be on a colour coded system such as red and black. So when the red slide handle matches up to the red lock on the wall, it means danger and slides are open etc.. I often find working with 2 people is more worrying.

On the note about leopards, they are also very dangerous, a pair got out at Bristol zoo once and were walking along the top terrace apparently! must of been a quiet day......

im shocked, the amount of big cats that bristol have kept.

The Lion cage that exists now used to be split into lots of different cages, there's a photo in the gallery. They looked tiny.

That was a relatively modern cat collection, housing four or five species originally- Lion, Tiger, Puma, Persian Leopard and ?.. The enclosures were very small with indoor dens offshow. Gradually over time they enlarged the space for the cats by opening up divisions and reducing the number of species. Now it is just the Lions but their whole area is now much bigger than the site covered by the former cages.

The Original Lion/Cat house was nextdoor on the site of the Nocturnal House on the main terrace. There were Lions, Tigers, including White Tigers, Leopards, Black Leopards & Jaguars. Five traditional barred main outside cages and about ten inside with a visitor walkthrough passageway.

I suspect the Leopard escape mentioned above was probably from that era?
