ZOO Dvůr Králové Dvůr Králové

Update on Satu, orangutan from Twycross - The carantene time of orangutan Satu ended on 10 March when she met Elmar, the breeding orangutan male in Dvur, for the first time. Satu climbed up to the ceiling and tried to avoid his proximity, Elmar seemed not intersted in her at all. But on 11 March morning, both changed their minds, and their first mating was observed.

Great news :) Fingers crossed for a successful birth in due course.

Short video of her first moments in Dvůr (hammock included):

(with czech commentary, nothing what wasn't said in this thread already)

Wow just shows how clever these apes our.

If you analyse the video a bit further you will see how Satu is obviously very nervous in her new surroundings. She quickly finds the highest and therefore most secure point in the enclosure- the ceiling bars and constructs her hammock there and within less than a minute of entering the enclosure is hidden inside it to shut out all the strangeness.

Some Orangs become very depressed longterm when they are moved to a new home like this- but evidently Satu has settled in okay and mated with their male.

My first thought on seeing the video was that she was clearly expressing her opinion on her situation. It's good that she was given something to use as a hiding place.

I was at Dudley the day after a new fully adult male Bejamin arrived there(he is still there today.) He had chosen a tire strung high up in the cage as his 'secure' place and would not leave it. He didn't have anything to cover himself with though. I noticed the floor was splattered all over with diahorrea, clearing indicating his emotional upset. These Apes are clearly often very upset when moved to new housing. When Batu arrived at Twycross he remained hiding on a shelf for months before finally accepting his new home.

Well, the clip is more highlights, she didn't start to build that hammock immeadiately, it's not a one take video, more a kind of summary. Not that you are wrong, but hopefully everything will go as smoothly as possible.

Oh, okay, I understand. I thought it was amazingly quick for her to go and hide like that, but the overall impression is the same. They can be very nervous when first introduced to new surroundings.

Is she pregnant yet, do you think?

I don't know, I'm not an insider. No recent news about orangutans on the official site, last new is 2 weeks ago about persian leopard cubs born (3 of them). If I would run into anything I would post it here.

New orang female is with Elmar- adult male. They are waiting for mating. Afterthat she will join to second female and her son.
Some more news: My colleagues started to join 2 northern white rhino females (Fatu- born in 2000 and Nabire- 1983) with male Sudan on Wednesday (25. march).
Zoo director decidet to take 6 year old elephant male from Colchester Zoo.

Orangutan Dona

There is some confusion as to whether Dona is still at Chester (see the thread about Member's Day at Chester). Have you heard anything about her?

Last weekend I attended an ape keeper talk in DK. They introduced all currently held animals with names, and also mentioned Dona´s departure to the UK. So I can´t help, it´s all I know.

Gorilla female Messy died due to cancer last Sunday evening (17.5.).

Yesterday, 2-years-old Amur tiger Boris was sent to zoo in Klajpeda.

Today, three young Black rhinos Deborah, Jamie and Jabu (2,1) are leaving Dvur and are travelling to a wildlife reservation in Tanzania.

sad news reagrading messy ..

how is satu getting along ?

And people are saying that Dona has died have you heard anything to confirm this ?

Can you tell me anything about her history ?

many thanks

I hope to visit Satu soon to see how is she doing.

Yes, Dona died, it was told by keepers in Dvur, who received a message from Chester.

Dona was born wild in Borneo, but illegally caugth as a baby and sent to Europe, in 1981 she came to Madrid zoo where she was hand-raised. In 1991 she came to Dvur, where she lived together with male Elmar and a second female Zaneta. She had three youngs, but she was a bad mother and only one of them, male Dahi survived (by beeing hand-raised), he lives now in Madrid.

According to their website Dvůr is sending their african lions to Bojnice (to phase out) and switching to asiatic ones (first two females should arrive soon). Great.

Hmmm...strange...they sent their Indian rhino away...and now want to change african lions for Asian. I thing african lions are better or Dvur than asian.
