Singapore Zoo Singapore Zoo News 2024

Notes from today's visit, mostly reptile related
  • The 2 outdoor RepTopia enclosures for the crocodile monitor and Chinese alligators have had their pools drained. The former Chinese alligator exhibit has essentially become a macaque playground
  • Several exhibits are up at the hatchery, didn't see most of the inhabitants but one tank had a pair of crested geckos, there were 2 small tanks with electric blue geckos and another had a chameleon. Below were some plastic tubs, one had a red-bellied short-necked turtle. If anyone else knows what's inside all the hatchery tanks it'd be much appreciated
  • Glad to've been wrong about the Gila monster, it's still with the western diamondback rattlesnakes
  • Another tree fell along the path in Primate Kingdom from the colobus monkey island the douc langur island

3 questions after today's visit:

1. are the ostriches still in the collection?

2. is the mantis kept in Fragile Forest's discovery outpost Deroplatys desiccata?

3. based on the files attached, is there a chance that these 2 species will be displayed in the future?

1. They don't have ostriches anymore
2. Didn't see that species but I think they do have it
2. Unlikely, those are just promoting the conservation projects they participate in but getting another sarus crane would be great

1. No new Ostriches since the last pair died.

2. Should be Deroplatys lobata, a native species.

3. There are/were plans to bring in Javan Gibbons, but it seems to have been delayed/shelved. Not sure about Sarus Cranes.

I am not sure if this is still the plan, but sometime back one of the ex-keepers had told me about Sarus Cranes being considered for the future expanded Asian Elephant enclosure that would have taken over KidzWorld.

If it is still a thing then it would be nice if done right, if I recall the Night Safari used to mix Sarus Cranes with them in the past (I think I remember seeing them on the tram ride) and there were even chicks inside the exhibit.

I heard that in the past there used to be Himalayan Griffon Vulture along the tram route and African Porcupine along the east lodge trail, can anyone help me verify?

I remember watching a Night Safari Tram Tour video where there at some point there were some "Parrot on Stick" enclosures, I believe the thumbnail was the Red Crowned Crane in the Barasingha enclosure. It was a 2 parter video that I'm very sure I saved into my Mandai playlist but currently I can't find it

I'll be on the search for some other old Tram Tours if I can

Extra Edit: Chiang Mai Night Safari has or at least had Himalayan Griffon Vultures, just to confirm it wasn't them right?

Eons ago Himalayan Griffon Vultures were winged clipped and displayed on perches above a cascade between the Bharal and Markhor exhibits.

African Crested Porcupines were mixed with the Sloth Bears but suffered from health issues and died off.

Is there an official confirmation for this. How old was he? Did staff take biological specimens including semen off him (for the WAZA GSMP Anoa program)?
Mandai doesn't really do official death announcements, last one I remembered was for Rod the Egyptian vulture. They never announced the deaths of other high profile animals like Kayla the lioness who died last year

According to Mandai's announcement page, the Komodo dragon and giant tortoise exhibit will be closed from September 1st until March 1st, 2025. Does anyone know what is going on?

Some small updates:

The 0.2 Nile Lechwes are now on display at the Giraffe exhibit throughout the day and no longer very skittish.

Red River Hogs are still being rotated with the 0.5 Nyalas for display. It seems like the original older pair have been swapped for 3 younger Hogs.

The Reptopia aviary is being upgraded. Heavy duty steel mesh is being added to the boardwalk railings.

Stitch the African Dwarf Crocodile is back on display at the former Chinese Alligator/Indian Pond Turtle exhibit. 0.2 Alligator Snapping Turtles have also been added to the exhibit.

So happy to see the dwarf croc and alligator snapping turtles back! I did notice the metal bars on the aviary railing but what animal would even need to have those put in place. Hopefully it will reopen soon
