List and Rank The North American Zoos You Have Visited!

Here's my thoughts on ranking the zoos I've visited (year listed is my most recent visit):

1. Bronx Zoo (2023): Far and away the best zoo I've visited. With very few exceptions, every exhibit at this zoo stands out. Both the collection and quality of exhibits is outstanding.

2. Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo (2024): My visit to Omaha's zoo was immediately after a small snow storm, which while making the newly completed African section less impressive, the zoo's Asian Highlands exhibit was fantastic with a fresh layer of snow on the ground. From the guest's perspective, the Desert Dome and Lied Jungle are a spectacle, but I found many of the animal enclosures to be underwhelming in both. Omaha's Madagascar exhibit was a letdown, though I found Kingdom of the Night to be the greatest nocturnal house I've been to.

3. St. Louis Zoo (2024): Another great zoo without many drawbacks. The zoo's reptile house was fantastic, as was the primate house. The maze of hoof stock yards was equally enjoyable. The least impressive aspect of the zoo was certainly the big cat exhibits, which suffered from poor viewing and small enclosures. The zoo's penguin and puffin enclosure was also small for the inhabitants, but the open air viewing of the birds made for the best viewing of those species that I've seen.

4. North Carolina Zoo (2021): Easily home to the largest enclosures I've seen. The indoor exhibits, while lacking the awe of the outdoor exhibits, are still very good. I was fortunate enough to visit before the Aviary shut down, which was my favorite indoor exhibit at this zoo.

5. Nashville Zoo (2024): The last zoo on my list that lacks any major disappointing exhibits. This entire zoo has a great layout, and is enjoyable to just walk through and take in the ambience. The exhibits are equally impressive, and all of an appropriate size.

6. National Zoo (2022): This zoo has some great hits but a few misses. The Asian Trail is spectacular, without a single bad exhibit. The American Trail, while less immersive, is still a well done complex. However, I thought the zoo's Orangutan's got the short end of the stick. While the O-line is fun to watch, the two exhibits on either end of the line were very small and lacking complexity. The newly opened Paws and Claws exhibits also had small exhibits for the inhabitants.

7. Cincinnati Zoo (2024): Overall, a solid zoo that lacks any truly memorable exhibits. Birds of the World and Manatee Springs were my personal standout exhibits. However, the Rhino Reserve was disappointing, and the Reptile House was underwhelming.

8. Georgia Aquarium (2021): Obviously, Ocean Voyager was incredible to see in person. I also thought the rest of the exhibits (minus the Sea lions and dolphins) were quite good. However, both the sea lions and dolphin exhibits are so bad that I couldn't justify ranking any higher.

9. Zoo Atlanta (2024): A nice mid sized zoo. I found the exhibits for the smaller primates were fantastic, I was less impressed by the gorilla and orangutan exhibits. The rest of Asia was overall fine and the newer Africa section was equally unmemorable. Their bird collection is quite large, though besides the Living Treehouse, the wire enclosures spread around near the children's zoo were not great for either the birds or visitors.

10. Riverbanks Zoo (2023): Excluding mammals, Riverbanks zoo is fantastic. Their bird house, while lacking the quantity of exhibits that the Bronx or Cincinnati have, make up for it in quality. Meanwhile, the newly renovated ARC is one of my favorite reptile houses. However, the front grottos are very poor, as is the Conservation Outpost. The rest of the mammal exhibits are more passable, with the gorilla exhibit edging near greatness.

11. Zoo Knoxville (2021): Now that Zoo Knoxville no longer has elephants, if I were to revisit it likely would move up on my list. The newly opened ARC is a splendid reptile house. The Asian Trek is also of high quality, as is the nearby Panda Village. The African side of the zoo was brought down by a rather poor elephant enclosure, and while most of this section is underwhelming, I was impressed by the size and privacy of the gorilla and chimpanzee outdoor enclosures.

12. Philadelphia Zoo (2021): I visited while the indoor bird exhibits were closed due to avian flu, which likely would improve my rankings. Across the board, the Philadelphia zoo was underwhelming. While the zoo 360 system is fun to witness, the exhibits on either end of the overhead trail is less impressive.

13. Milwaukee Zoo (2024): Excluding this zoo's very well done bird house, the rest of the zoo is missing quality. The many predator/prey exhibits make for good sightlines, the predator exhibits are quite small. I do, however, appreciate the many indoor holdings that are viewable to the public.

14. Greensboro Science Center (2021): The science center's animal exhibits are all of good quality, it mostly ranks lower on my list due to the smaller size. The aquarium is well done, minus the the room given to penguins. The outdoor exhibits are all of high quality, though (minus the small cats section) there was little to no connection between one exhibit to another.

15. Greenville Zoo (2024): A very small zoo, without anything worth writing home about. The primates certainly get the short end of the stick. However, the flamingo lagoon is quite scenic, and I found walking around the zoo to be enjoyable.

16. Chattanooga Zoo (2024): Another quite small zoo. Once again, no exhibits that stood out. I mainly ranked Greenville Zoo higher than Chattanooga as Greenville has a better layout than Chattanooga.

17. Mystic Aquarium (2023): While having a great beluga exhibit, the rest of the aquarium fails to come close. The main gallery lacks a cohesive pathway or connection between the various tanks. While home to a great collection of rescued seals, the exhibits are rather small and without great viewing opportunities. The penguin exhibit is likely the worst exhibit here.

18. Western North Carolina Nature Center (2021): Every exhibit here is of good quality, however, on my visit there were only eight species out (Covid meant the indoor reptile section was closed, and the birds of prey pathway was closed). The animals I did see, however, were in large and naturalistic enclosures.

19. Elmwood Park Zoo (2023): Even though it is last on the list, I found Elmwood Park Zoo to still be worth visiting. The main drawbacks I found were the disappointing indoor exhibits, lack of cohesion, and some smaller outdoor exhibits, particularly for the bison. The Trail of the Jaguar was very well done however.

If this list looks weird it's because I looked on a map to see what I have visited.
There are a couple more drive through parks I can't remember their names (yeah I'm getting old)

I have a rather small list:

#1 Toronto Zoo -> my 'home' zoo, and one I've grown up visiting. As I expand the list of zoos I've visited I imagine it will fall down my list.

#2 Rosamond Gifford Zoo -> a recent addition to my list of zoos I've visited. While it was small, it was very nice to see some of the species I hadn't had a chance to see at Toronto, specifically the elephants and Andean Bear

#3 Jungle Cat World (Orono) -> only makes my ranking list because I have nothing else... not a facility I remember fondly, mostly due to incredibly small and non-enriching habitats

Toronto Zoo is a really solid facility, and massive. There are not that many truly two day zoos, but Toronto can certainly be included in that list if you want to see everything. I spent from about opening until 3PM and missed close to half the zoo. It is a really nice zoo, top five for me even without seeing everything.

Personally I’ve never actually spent an entire day at the facility. I got close, again going from opening till about 3pm like you did. That was back in March, and many of the outdoor animals weren’t on display, so it made my trip through a bit quicker. Still hit every area though, which was nice for a change from the “do the main part and leave everything else” mindset of my parents

Yeah, we were there in July and only had time to see Indo-Malaya, Africa, Lunch, Canadian Domain, and then the tram through the other parts (but we did not stop). The path between Indo-Malaya and Africa was closed, so that caused a fair amount more walking than one would normally do if you could just connect through that direction.

1. Shedd Aquarium: Shedd blew me away with how good it is, the Oceanarium is great, Wild Reef is excellent, and I can't wait to see the new changes for the aquarium.

2. Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum: Not a true zoo, I know, but it is still a very impressive facility that focuses on native wildlife from the Sonoran Desert. The Desert Loop trail is amazing and while it is a 40 minute drive from Tucson, it is worth it.

3. Houston Zoo: A great zoo that keeps getting better. Galapagos, The Pantanal, Texas Wetlands and the McNair Asian Elephant exhibit are all amazing exhibits. That said, some areas of the zoo are still pretty disorganized and I hope that with Birds of The World finished now, the zoo starts working on them soon.

4. Guadalajara Zoo: It's been a long time since I've been there, but I still remember a good chunk of it. It's still to this day the largest zoo I've ever been to. The Safari is really good and I still remember the really long lines it created, the aquarium there is pretty good too. Probably the best zoo outside the US I've been to so far.

5. Brookfield Zoo: Brookfield, despite being stagnant for a decade and losing animals such as the Orinoco Crocodile and the Przewaslki's Horse, is still a pretty good zoological facility. Great Bear Wilderness is decent, the bison and bear exhibits are pretty good, and the wolf exhibit is still in my opinion the best exhibit in the zoo. The North America aviary south of Tropic World is actually not bad, I thought it was decent. Tropic World, despite its brutalist design, is still decent in that gives animals a good amount of space and at least tries to look natural, and I hope that somewhere along the way, the interior of the building gets a new renovation (yes, I am aware that the zoos is making outdoors spaces for the primates, but still). I still think that both Desert's Edge and the Clouded Leopard Rainforest needs changes, and it'd be nice if the buildings are able to some space from the grottos while also leaving room for that planned amphitheater.

6. Lincoln Park Zoo: A nice free zoo. While many think that Lincoln Park is much better than Brookfield (and I can understand why), I'm of the opposite camp. That being said, I still think that LPZ is pretty good, the gorilla and chimp exhibits are great, and the lion exhibit is also pretty good. However, I still have some criticisms, mainly with how the Kovler Lion House massive upgraded the lion exhibit, but the rest of the animals there didn't get an exhibit as good as the lions. I also thought the primate house didn't give most of the primates there a lot of space.

7. Reid Park Zoo: For a small zoo, it's actually surprisingly decent. The African Bush Elephant exhibit was surprisingly well done and it has a pretty decent lineup of South American animals, just wish some of the exhibits were better. Hopefully the new Asia exhibit turns out great.

What changes would you suggest for Desert's Edge and Clouded Leopard Rainforest? I can imagine some myself, just curious.

I would agree the updated southern cat exhibits aren't as effective as the new lion habitat, although giving the snow leopard and lynx each access two two outdoor spaces is an improvement on previously each only having one.

I'm very fond of the Primate House but it is a shame there isn't a way to carve more space in that area.

As I stated, expand the buildings by taking space from the grottos while also leaving room for the amphitheater. I believe that having more space would allow many of the exhibits to be expanded and/or improved.

Another change that could be done is move some of the African animals from Desert’s Edge to the Habitat Africa Savannah building. This could be done to either expand habitats, get new species to replace old ones or to move existing animals to those exhibits.

  • SeaLife Orlando - 5/10
  • Austin Aquarium - 4/10
Out of interest, how does SeaLife Orlando rate so close to Austin Aquarium? SeaLife is a legitimate AZA aquarium that is overall quite nice, albeit fairly small and expensive....whereas Austin Aquarium is a pretty sad place that takes about 15 minutes to see in its entirety and has some legitimately concerning habitats.

My reasoning is that both are relatively small facilities that don't take long to get through. Austin Aquarium is problematic for sure and I would say I meant to lower it to a 3.3/10 following the excessive mammal "experience" enclosures and after learning about some of the bad stuff behind the scenes, I just forgot to update the list I copied from. I do think SeaLife Orlando is a better facility which is why it had a whole 1 point star rating above it. The large shark exhibit alone is far better than anything Austin Aquarium has. Basically anything with 5/10 or above is a facility I deem good or worth visiting again. I don't personally see myself ever going back to the Austin Aquarium, but I wouldn't mind going back to SeaLife Orlando again.

That all makes sense :)

Yeah, I am in the same boat in regards to visiting again. I could see going to SLO again, but not Austin Aquarium, even though I go to Austin a few times a year I can see going to the zoo again before ever going to the aquarium.

Update for visits this year. My #10 for zoos and #10 for aquariums changed this year. Previous #7 Audubon Aquarium dropped off the list after visiting it again in 2023 (prior visit 1998). 10 new zoos and aquariums this year in purple.

I am going to list my top 10 and the full list below it. My list would probably be different if I visited these places again. For example Miami, I went around 7 months after Hurricane Andrew, so it was still a mess (and that was a long time ago).

Here’s my list and ranking

2 Arizona Sonoran Desert museum
3 Bronx Zoo
4 Philadelphia Zoo
5 Bear Country
6 Adventure aquarium
7 Jeinkinsons aquarium
8 Sea World Orlando
9 Disneys animal kingdom.
Update to the list
1 Omaha zoo
2 Lee G Simmons conservation park and wildlife safari and this place takes second spot because it was my first up close encounter with wolves and also the closest I have ever been to a bald eagle without a barrier separating you from the eagles and it also takes second spot for its wide variety of owls, grey fox and bobcat and what I mean by up close regarding the wolves is that where you view the wolves from you can see the entire exhibit but as for the rest of the rankings it’s still the same as of now however that may possibly change in the summer or fall of 2025 and it depends on if I get to go to the Bronx zoo again.
