Asian Elephants in Europe 2024

@Kifaru Bwana: This is a theory, but I have never seen anything that actually proves this. I am absolutely not convinced there is any truth in this. Avani was healthy and thriving until EEHV killed her, so this case actually speaks against this theory.
 
We will never know all of the facts of Bernadine and Avani. Hopefully all will go well next time which it should.

I will admit the subject has not been that well researched till date (or any) what happens post partum both mechanically and behaviourally in the cow that birthed or the (or the lack of a) herd around her towards the calf and vice versa. However, I would like to see it properly investigated as I am not dead cert on either a Yes or a No (particularly so ... where the danger is looming that anthropocentric interpretations or personal convictions come into play).

While I do advocate for behavioural and evaluation research into this, ATM ... let us get back to the every day news surrounding current changes in the European elephant population. I know - from in-person (confidential and under embargo) information - that there is a lot going on or will come to pass shortly. It appears there is a lot of speculation around for example Amersfoort, Eindhoven and Emmen zoos with replacement or new elephants.

If he indeed goes to Emmen then he will replace Timber. Timber is moving to Eindhoven Zoo soon.

Since Ein She Min and Ravi's move, there is no longer a bachelor group in Emmen. The four young bulls are all still in the herd. Although Mauk and Manoa do reach an age to slowly leave the herd soon. Emmen has no more sons of Radza, by the way. They have all moved away in recent years.
 
Why is Emmen going to exchange the bull? I can’t see a reason for such a move - Timber has only been there for a few years and has not sired a daughter yet, so no concern of inbreeding.

Its probably because he sired yet another male there. They'll probably keep swapping bulls until they find one that sires a female

Although little has been shared about his move, it was said that the EEP said he is needed at Eindhoven Zoo. In addition, it could also have to do with the fact that he has often been on his own in Emmen for a long time. He cannot join the herd because Mingalar Oo and Ma Yay Yee are no longer being bred and Swhe Zin only ‘recently’ had a calf from him. Besides, he did not get along well with the young bulls in the bachelor group.

Sibu is moving to Safari Madrid? Does this mean he's retiring from breeding for now?

Many of the zoos on your list don’t want a bull and don’t have the facilities to keep one:
- Karlsruhe
- Hannover (no breeding allowed with hybrid females)
- Burgers Zoo (keeps only old females)
- Benidorm (keeps only old females now)
- Fasano (Asian females are all old).
