Snowleopard's Mammals: A Lifetime List of Species Mammalian and Non-Mammalian

Are you sure about seeing babirusa at Artis and if so, when was this? To my knowledge the species has not been kept there since the 1920s.

I visited Artis around ~1999? for the first time and I thought they were kept around the Minangkabause house. Either together with anoa or the area was split into two enclosures. But according to zootierliste, my memory is wrong..? I’m probably just getting old o_O

I do still feel they belong in Artis though.

Haven't you seen Visayan warty pigs at Planckendael (Belgium)? They have been there since 2013.

This is an interesting question. I looked up my review of Planckendael Zoo (Belgium) and I wrote 10 paragraphs about the place and at no point did I mention Visayan Warty Pigs. There's also no icon of one of the pigs on the zoo's map for 2019, either in a separate exhibit or in with the Indian Rhinos. However, the gallery has loads of photos over the years of Visayan Warty Pigs at the zoo, so it seems the species was there but I have no recollection of seeing any. It's a mystery. They could have been temporarily off-show, or perhaps there was only a couple in with a rhino and I missed them, or simply not on the detailed map for whatever reason, etc.

I am sure they weren't (I have been visiting Artis since the 90s and currently work there), also because I remember how wowed I was when first seeing babirussa, especially the impressive male, at Diergaarde Blijdorp/Rotterdam Zoo during my first visit in 1997.

From the top of my head, the species at the Minangkabause House in the 1990s were hog deer, roe deer, southern pudu and blue duiker.

Artis did have plans (at the time openly stated in guidebooks etc.) to house babirussa and anoa at the Minangkabause around 2010 (the anoa came, the babirussa evidently didn't). So maybe that's what got you mixed up?

Time for my last 'piggy' post and I will analyze TWO more species today. I've seen Wild Boars, also called Eurasian Wild Pigs and a host of other names, at 17 zoos. Wild Boars were incredibly rare for me for a very long time, with just my childhood zoo, my local zoo and Langenberg Wildlife Park all the way up until 2008. Then only 4 American zoos out of hundreds have had Wild Boar when I've visited, but I did see the species 6 times in a month in Western Europe. I bet that for some zoo nerds on that continent, who perhaps enjoy touring the excellent German 'wildparks', Wild Boar would be one of the more common species someone can see in zoos.

1- Alberta Game Farm/Polar Park (Canada) – Wild Boar – 1986
2- Greater Vancouver Zoo (Canada) – Wild Boar – 1998
3- Langenberg Wildlife Park (Switzerland) – Wild Boar – 2003
4- Minnesota Zoo (USA) – Wild Boar – 2008
5- San Diego Zoo (USA) – Wild Boar – 2008
6- Wild Wilderness Drive-Through Safari (USA) – Wild Boar – 2015
7- Capital of Texas Zoo (USA) – Wild Boar – 2015
8- Natuurpark Lelystad (Netherlands) – Wild Boar – 2019
9- Wildpark Gangelt (Germany) – Wild Boar – 2019
10- Wildpark Dunnwald (Germany) – Wild Boar – 2019
11- Tiergehege Kaisergarten (Germany) – Wild Boar – 2019
12- Dierenrijk (Animal Kingdom) (Netherlands) – Wild Boar – 2019
13- Olderdissen Zoo (Germany) – Wild Boar – 2019
14- Calgary Zoo (Canada) – Wild Boar – 2022
15- Scandinavian Wildlife Park (Denmark) – Wild Boar – 2022
16- AQUA Aquarium & Wildlife Park (Denmark) – Wild Boar – 2022
17- Taiping Zoo (Malaysia) – Wild Boar – 2024

AND...

I've seen Bearded Pigs, labeled as Bornean in each case, at 6 zoos. Here's a species that seemed to have gained a solid foothold in American zoos in the 2000s and I can recall seeing a number of them at one time during one of my San Diego Zoo visits. What the heck happened? Was there little to no breeding success? Not enough zoos on board to help sustain a population? An avalanche of Red River Hogs in AZA zoos? It seems that the viable future for accredited U.S. zoos is to choose one or two species and then to say "the hell with the rest of them", while in Europe there is FAR more diversity and rare species are sustained with more regularity. Yet another reason why Europe is the #1 destination for zoos. Having said that, Bearded Pigs seem to be pretty much extinct across the globe, as there's hardly any still in captivity.

1- San Diego Zoo (USA) – Bornean Bearded Pig – 2006
2- Philadelphia Zoo (USA) – Bornean Bearded Pig – 2010
3- Gladys Porter Zoo (USA) – Bornean Bearded Pig – 2010
4- Wild Wilderness Drive-Through Safari (USA) – Bornean Bearded Pig – 2015
5- Capital of Texas Zoo (USA) – Bornean Bearded Pig – 2015
6- Berlin Zoo (Germany) – Bornean Bearded Pig – 2019

Here's the final standings for all 'pigs':

Red River Hog - 65 zoos
Warthog - 51 zoos
Collared Peccary - 33 zoos
Babirusa - 24 zoos
Chacoan Peccary - 17 zoos
Visayan Warty Pig - 17 zoos
Wild Boar - 17 zoos
Bearded Pig - 6 zoos
White-lipped Peccary - 4 zoos
Javan Warty Pig - 3 zoos (including 1 with Bawean Warty Pig)
Bushpig - 1 zoo

For many years, Greater Vancouver Zoo (Canada) had a huge herd of at least 20 Wild Boar. But, just like their herd of 20 Collared Peccaries, both species were completely phased out of the zoo. Where those 40+ animals went remains a mystery. And zoo nerds everywhere shake their heads with dismay...

There was definitely some inbreeding going on because after a few years the 'boars' at Greater Vancouver Zoo began to look a little like feral pigs:

Minnesota Zoo (USA) opened Russia's Grizzly Coast to great fanfare, even though the complex held only 4 species. The exceptional Tiger, Brown Bear and Sea Otter habitats hold up brilliantly 16 years later, but unfortunately the Wild Boar exhibit appears to have sat empty for almost half that time period! What is going on there? Is there anything in this enclosure?

Capital of Texas Zoo (USA) had a small herd of Wild Boar in 2015, showing that the species does pop up here and there in obscure locations. Perhaps there are some hunting ranches in Texas with larger populations.

What really surprised me was seeing the minimal barrier for the Wild Boars. Anyone could easily step into the exhibit via the keeper's wooden access area and there were several of these posts.

The only Southeast Asian zoo (out of 59) on my recent road trip that held Wild Boar was Taiping Zoo (Malaysia). If you look closely, you can see a Crab-eating Macaque walking along the fence on the left-hand side. If you wish to see wild primates, deer, birds or lizards in Asian jungles, then you literally can see all of them just walking around zoos.

As for 'Bornean' Bearded Pigs, it was a treat for me to see them at San Diego Zoo (USA) on my visits in 2006, 2008 and 2011. After that, it was bye, bye piggies for me as when I returned in 2017 I think they had all disappeared. Here's a photo of 4 in one image:

@djaeon

My photo, taken at Philadelphia Zoo (USA) in 2010, shows at least 3 Bearded Pigs and of course they are now all long gone from that zoo too.

Here's another photo of possibly 3 Bearded Pigs that I took at Gladys Porter Zoo (USA) in 2010. I own the history book of that facility and it's amazing at how so much of the zoo was built in one shot in the 1970s and yet a lot of the enclosures have hardly changed since. In some respects it's similar to Milwaukee County Zoo (USA), which has faced the same problem of aging infrastructure.

The now permanently closed Wild Wilderness Drive-Through Safari (USA) had a spacious paddock for several Bearded Pigs. If you look past the Zebras in this photo, you can actually see a Bearded Pig in its shelter at the back.

Of all the zoos in North America, who would have guessed that the very last place with a Bearded Pig would be the Capital of Texas Zoo (USA)? It's a funny old world. I visited this relatively unknown zoo in 2015 and saw Bearded Pigs and there's still ONE left as of this past July. He's an elderly, arthritic individual.

@biggest_dreamer

I vividly recall seeing the very last Bearded Pig in Europe at Berlin Zoo (Germany) in 2019. What a magnificent specimen! The AZA would see this guy and quickly boot him out just to get more Red River Hogs in the door. :p

Minnesota's Wild Boar exhibit had been empty for a long time but recently some Domestic Pigs moved in. The zoo has said that they want to import some new Wild Boar but due to various import regulations it may be years before this happens.

Thank you for making me feel old o_O but genuinely thanks for clearing that up. I visited Blijdorp for the first time around that era as well, so probably got mixed up…

@snowleopard, I see that I seem to have missed a relatively easy way of ever seeing a bearded pig :(I’m surprised that you managed to tour so many south-east asian zoo’s and not see any more? Surprising that there are so few in captivity in Indonesia…

There is no Bearded Pigs in Indonesian zoos, as far as a know. There's no in Malaysia or Thailand either. The only place in South-East Asia is actually Singapore. @snowleopard and I missed them there, because we didn't attend the animal shows. I saw one in February at the Night Safari during the Creatures of the Night presentation, but I also heard that they went on display there after our visit.

This is an interesting question. I looked up my review of Planckendael Zoo (Belgium) and I wrote 10 paragraphs about the place and at no point did I mention Visayan Warty Pigs. They were kept that time in an enclosure next to the Asiatic lions and the oriental stork aviary.

Snowleopard, if you visited Singapore Night Safari recently, you might have seen Sumatran Bearded Pigs, too, including ones in a night animal show.

Wild pigs suffer from being related to the lowly domestic pigs. Wild species are not well studied, even their taxonomy is a mess, and they are neglected in zoos. But they are a major group of wild ungulates, many highly endangered due to hunting and interbreeding with feral pigs. They are also surprisingly intelligent and capable of learning tricks. So spare more heart to wild piggies, everybody :D !

Now that I'm done with all the 8 'pig' species I've seen in zoos, it's time to plunge into the family of Cervidae. I'll begin by lamenting the lack of diversity with muntjacs, as the book All the Mammals of the World (2023) lists 13 species and yet how many are easily seen in zoos anywhere on the planet? An individual can visit hundreds and hundreds of zoos and yet not see most of the types of muntjac that exist. It's actually remarkable how few different species pop up in zoos all across the continents.

There's also a question of accuracy with zoo signage, as a huge chunk of the muntjacs I've seen have been Reeves's Muntjacs, even though at times the signage in the past has said something like 'Asian Muntjac', 'Indian Muntjac', 'Chinese Muntjac' or various other names for species that are clearly Reeves's. While @twilighter and I were in Southeast Asia, we saw Southern Red Muntjacs everywhere, often labeled as 'Indian Muntjacs', and some Northern Red Muntjacs. (On a return trip to Khao Kheow Zoo while I was flying back to Canada, @twilighter also saw a Fea's Muntjac) There were some Northern Red Muntjacs in Southeast Asia at the zoos we visited, based on information from curators working there, as well as the odd Southern Red Muntjac and Northern Red Muntjac in American zoos in the past. Some zoos in Asia don't know if they have Southern or Northern Red Muntjacs as sometimes the signage is inaccurate. It's all a bit vague and I've done the best I can to compile my master list. One thing for sure is that muntjacs are common in captivity, as I surpassed a century of zoos with muntjacs last month.

101 zoos and 3 species (78 Reeves’s, 21 Southern Red, 4 Northern Red - and likely many more) + 2 zoos had 2 species at once

I might have even seen some Roosevelts' Muntjacs, with that name appearing on a few signs here and there, but perhaps the zoos back in the day didn't even know what species they had in their enclosures and I have no definitive way of knowing that I saw Roosevelts'. Some of those zoos likely meant Reeves's and got the name wrong...haha! Perhaps some zoo nerds reading this can privately message me and I can edit if necessary. Let me know what I saw. ;)

In American zoos, Reeves's Muntjacs are often 'stop-gap' animals to fill an exhibit when the regular species dies. There's no way that this cage was designed for muntjacs at Peoria Zoo (USA) and I'm sure the enclosure holds a different species a decade after my visit.

I've seen some species of muntjac that clearly isn't Reeve's signed as Indian Muntjac before at a few roadside zoos. I'm not sure what species these are, I assume Southern Red?

Let me know what I saw. ;)

These 5 trips had a lot of muntjac sightings:

2014 = 13 zoos (USA)
2015 = 11 zoos (USA)
2019 = 20 zoos (Western Europe)

There's been a LOT of mixed-species exhibits involving muntjacs and I'll go with that theme for today's post.

Mesker Park Zoo (USA) had Reeves's Muntjacs, Axis Deer and Przewalski's Horses all together in this spacious paddock in 2010. You can see a small fenced off area that allowed the muntjacs access but not the larger mammals.

This admittedly spectacular exhibit at San Antonio Zoo (USA) held Reeves's Muntjacs, Small-clawed Otters and White-cheeked Gibbons and it was fantastic seeing the interactions between the three species.

Montgomery Zoo (USA) had Reeve's Muntjacs, Axis Deer, Fallow Deer, Sika Deer, Banteng and Sarus Cranes all together in 2010:

What species are these two? Chattanooga Zoo (USA) in 2012 had these 'Indian' Muntjacs in with Bactrian Camels.

Franklin Park Zoo (USA) had Red Pandas with Reeves's Muntjacs in 2012:

Some establishments, such as Rosamond Gifford Zoo (USA), had signs saying 'Chinese Muntjacs' on their exhibits. I'm just assuming the animals were Reeves's Muntjacs, but who knows?

Oh boy. Here's two 'Muntjacs' at Hemker Park & Zoo (USA) in 2014. Apparently this exhibit no longer exists, but there were three animals in this tiny cage and I wasn't impressed. Another photo of mine in the gallery reveals a dad, mom and baby muntjac.

In American zoos, Reeves's Muntjacs are often 'stop-gap' animals to fill an exhibit when the regular species dies. There's no way that this cage was designed for muntjacs at Peoria Zoo (USA) and I'm sure the enclosure holds a different species a decade after my visit.

Tammar Wallabies, Red-necked Wallabies and Reeves's Muntjacs were all together, just as they would be on the grasslands of Australia, at Lincoln Children's Zoo (USA) :p.

Reeves's Muntjacs were together with White-handed Gibbons and Temminck's Tragopans at Pueblo Zoo (USA) in 2014:

Sharkarosa Wildlife Ranch (USA), a naff little roadside zoo, had Reeves's Muntjacs with Red Kangaroos, Eastern Grey Kangaroos, Red-necked Wallabies and Swamp Wallabies. What's with all the macropod/muntjac combos?

Alameda Park Zoo (USA) had Reeves's Muntjacs, African Spurred Tortoises and Ring-tailed Lemurs as one big family in 2015.

Elsewhere in the zoo, Alameda had Reeves's Muntjacs, Guanacos and Rheas together as well!

At many zoos, there's a combination of Red Pandas and Reeves's Muntjacs. Here's an example at Lille Zoo (France):

I like this image of a Reeves's Muntjac at AQUA Aquarium & Wildlife Park (Denmark), even though it's puzzling why the animal would be at a facility that is almost exclusively native Scandinavian species.

Sriayuthaya Lion Park (Thailand) had these guys, labeled as Northern Red Muntjac, and this species is very common in Thai zoos.

There have been no muntjac in Brazil since the 1970s... South America might be the only muntjac-free inhabited continent.

Time for my new favorite tradition of sharing my 1sts (that I can remember) for mammal groups from @snowleopard's epic thread. Ones I've seen wild in bold.

Suidae:
1.) (Babyrousa celebensis) North Sulawesi Babirusa (Bronx Zoo late-1980s)
2.) (Phacochoerus aethiopicus) Desert Warthog (Never captive, wild in Kenya 2021)
3.) (Phacochoerus africanus) Common Warthog (San Diego Zoo or WAP early-1990s, wild in Zambia 2019)
4.) (Hylochoerus meinertzhageni) giant forest hog (Never captive, wild in Ethiopia 2019)

5.) (Potamochoerus larvatus) bushpig (San Diego Zoo 2002)
6.) (Potamochoerus porcus) red river hog (San Diego Zoo late-1980s, wild in Gabon 2024)
7.) (Sus barbatus) Bornean bearded pig (San Diego Zoo mid-1990s)
8.) (Sus cebifrons) Visayan Warty Pig (San Diego Zoo 2002)
9.) (Sus philippinensis) Philippine Warty Pig (Avilon Zoo 2018)
10.) (Sus scrofa) wild boar (San Diego Zoo late-1980s, wild in India 2008)
11.) (Sus verrucosus) Javan Warty Pig (Taman Safari Prigen 2022)

Tayassuidae:
1.) (Catagonus wagneri) Chacoan peccary (San Diego late-1990s)
2.) (Pecari tajacu) collared peccary (Smithsonian National Zoo early-1990s, wild in Costa Rica 2014)
3.) (Tayassu pecari) White-lipped Peccary (Ménagerie du Jardin des Plantes 2009)

Tragulidae:
1.) (Tragulus javanicus) Javan chevrotain (Batu Secret Zoo 2022, wild in Java 2022)
2.) (Tragulus kanchil) Lesser Malay chevrotain (Dusit Zoo 2018, wild in Singapore 2023)

3.) (Tragulus napu) Greater Malay chevrotain (Bronx Zoo late-1980s)
4.) (Tragulus nigricans) Balabac chevrotain (Wroclaw Zoo 2010)
5.) (Moschiola kathygre) Yellow-striped chevrotain (Singapore Night Safari 2018)

Some notes:
I'm very eager to add a few more Suids either wild or semi-captive like Pygmy Hog, Sulawesi Warty Pig, maybe Togian Babirusa. But I was saddened to hear swine flu knocked out a bunch of the wild populations :(

Crazy I had to wait so long for White-lipped Peccary, but just wasn't kept in USA I don't think.

I'm listing the first T. javanicus and T. kanchil I can be sure of, although I had seen "Lesser Mouse Deer" in San Diego Zoo in the late-1990s and a few zoos in Europe including Frankfurt in 2010.

Wait, really? Thought they were common everywhere in the developed world. It's understandable, though. You Aussies are in dire need of new ungulates...
Yep. Australia and New Zealand are almost if not as bad as Brazil when it comes to lack of exotic species diversity in our zoos.
