Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo Discussion thread 2024

I don't know of anything in the last 2 weeks, but she did go in for a teeth/reproductive health check back in early July (it was streamed on Zoolife). She had 6 teeth removed plus a polyp (I assume from her uterus). Last I heard she's been recovering well and spending most of her time with Jingga.
I knew she had that down in July, but her nail polish from that surgery faded. Then she was off exhibit for about a month between mid August to mid September, and now she's back with new polish. That would suggest she had something done medically, but I haven't heard anyone talking about. I wonder what it could be

Did anyone get to see orangutans Budi, Sekali, and baby Wali on enclosure recently? I think this family group has only come out 3 times so far, but I wish I could see it!

Judging by Ramai's age she is 40 years old I feel like its too late for her to have kids fingers crossed we do get at least one out of her. But to me I think she is to old and it is to late for her to have kids. Also if she is reproductive issues she could die while giving birth or after just like sakura she was too old to give birth and she died shortly after.

Yes, she is turning 39 years old this Friday, so she is reaching reproductive limits. The Orangutan SSP will continue recommending her to breed until she is 40 years old, so she has about a year left to get pregnant. When I said she had reproductive issues, all we know is that she so far hasn't conceived with Budi, and they have been breeding for 2+ years, but that is likely because they just found a polyp in her uterus that likely caused some infertility. Now that it has been taken out, she doesn't have any other known (at least to me) reproductive issues, besides just not yet having conceived. Puppe had Budi when she was 40 years old and she's still okay lol! What happened with Sakura is super sad, but she is a different species than Ramai so hopefully that won't happen. If her being pregnant was really a health concern, I would sincerely hope that the zoo and the SSP would stop efforts to get her to conceive, but who knows for sure. FIngers crossed she can have one more baby while it is still safe and manageable for her to do so!

This might be a silly question - but why does Ramai (orangutan) get nail polish? I get why it would be indicative of a surgery (i.e. while she's under anesthesia) - but why at all?

According to my research, primates get their nails painted when they have surgery to avoid them picking at their scars! They really don't like having to put primates in "cones" so they use bright nail polish. Typically primates are much more focused on taking the polish off, they don't even mess with their scars.

It depends when her birthday is. But my feeling is it might be too late for Ramai she is already almost 40 years old and Puppe has really good genetics I mean look at her she is 57 and she doesn't look a day past 40. Ramai also has pregnancy problems so its less likely for her to get pregant at 40 years old. I think might only ever have 1 child which is jingga. How come we didn't breed all those years ago after she had Jingga was it because the pregnancy issues.

Her birthday is this Friday! I'm holding out hope that she has one more, but we will see! If she doesn't get pregenant by Oct 4th, 2025, they will stop trying to breed her. She didn't breed all these years because after Molek (Budi, Jingga, and Kembali"s dad) died, there wasn't a breeding male for the adult females. They had to wait for Budi to grow up to try to have a baby. Also, we don't know that it is less likely for Ramai to get pregnant, because we don't really know if she still has reproductive issues. She had a polyp that likely cause infertility, and it got removed. So she might not have any more reproductive issues because it is gone, we just don't know for sure yet either way.

I attended the virtual Toronto Zoo Board meeting - it was a relatively short meeting:

1) Toronto Zoo Strategic Plan - Dolf presented the 2025-2027 Strategy Plan - most of it in line with ongoing messaging (connecting people with animal conversation, engaging stakeholders etc.). He did put some emphasis on "saving" Canadian species with a focus on biobanking, conservation breeding and translocation programs;

2) Orangutans - it was almost a blink and you miss it moment - but he did acknowledge Kembali's escape. He confirmed the outdoor exhibit had reopened for the female orangutans with some modifications already underway - and more comprehensive modifications planned for the fall after the exhibit closes to prepare for a re-opening in the spring;

3) Amur tigers - Dolf confirmed the new habitat was complete and the "tigers" (although at this point it would just be Mazy) have access and have been exploring it;

4) Snow leopards - someone on this forum asked recently when the "baby" snow leopards would be on exhibit - apparently their debut is expected later this month; and

5) Oasis Zoo Run - apparently raised $80K this year, taking the total to over $1M since inception.

@Zooer how do I attend the board meetings.

It's pretty easy - the Zoo falls under the City of Toronto's operating budget/remit so it's through their normal access to any City meetings which the public is invited to.

Toronto City Council

The meetings aren't posted yet for 2025 - but they did submit them for approval at the meeting so I took a screen shot.

So I've gathered that I won't be likely to see the tamanduas and apparently the armadillos aren't out either--should I still plan extra time into my trip to go to the Kids Zoo or just skip it then? I'm admittedly a bit torn because I skipped it last year and would still like to see bunnies... :c

Also, I've had to postpone my trip to next weekend because the train line from Union to Rouge Hill is out of service this weekend, so I hope the Zoomobile will still be running by then and the Smoke's in the main plaza will still be open...

The Sumatrans have also been rotating through the new Amur tiger exhibit for the last week or so. And it looks fantastic!

I hope we get a Canadian lynx and a caracal lynx soon it would we awesome to have two different species at the Toronto Zoo again. I got a question though why did we get rid of the Canadian lynx and the caracal lynx. Cause all that I remember is us having a 2 Canadian lynx cubs in 2016 then after that I never herd anything from the Canadian lynxes again. And for the caracal lynx I think we just got rid of them randomly in 2015 or 14 I don't remember exactly when they did get rid of them. All I just remember about them is that they lived between the lion's and hyena's and I remember going back to where they were and not seeing them there anymore.
