Cities in need of zoos

It sounds counterintuitive but I think a tropical themed zoo would do very well in Vegas.
The sort with mainly indoor buildings and dome ish exhibits. If they were kept between 75-85 F in the summer time they would actually be cooler compared to outside!
And toasty warm in the winter.

Yeah, exactly! Shark Reef also kind of leans that way, and it’s in keeping with the city’s other exotic experiences. It would give an opportunity for some really innovative exhibits, and you could easily still have some zoo staples like hippopotamuses in a mostly indoor facility too.

With the current water crisis/shortages, it's sadly not likely/realistic to have a tropical themed zoo be created now. It would just be too specific. However, a desert zoo is more realistic and plausible. I'm designing one in and positing it on here in a couple months.

While obviously a desert theme is very doable, to say a tropical theme is out of the question is
not true. Las Vegas banks water every single year due to the credit of water returned to Lake Mead. The Southern Nevada Water Authority has explicitly sanctioned water projects
if it leads to tourism (example the Bellagio- though in their defense they mainly use
untreated reclaimed water for the fountains).
Look forward to seeing your plans. Are they for a proposed project or just theoretical?

It's just theoretical and it's meant to be as realistic as possible ( with some unrealistic parts, like having elephants ) but an emphasis on making it stand out in Las Vegas as there are multiple other attractions like Mandalay Bay Shark Reef that would be a likely competitor in popularity/visitation

cool. look forward to it. IMHO the location will largely dictate the design. Something on the strip
(there are a couple possible locations on the South end) would have to be more compact
whereas a decent sized zoo (100 acres or more) would have to be much further out.
One idea I have thought of is a partnership with the Pauite tribe in the Northwest off of 95.
They have about 3000 acres of completely unused land. they have 3 golf course on part of their used land so they have no problem getting water.

I was thinking maybe in Henderson so it is less urban but still close to the Strip
 
Huntsville, Alabama, with all of its explosive growth, really has nothing to do for young families- who are the primary demographic driving that growth. A zoo may be a great idea for the city- providing another source of revenue unrelated to the Redstone Arsenal or the military base. Madison County has a lot of sparsely-populated rural land in the far-northern and eastern parts of the county, which would be a perfect place for a zoo with large acreage, similar to the NC Zoo.

Columbus, Georgia might be another good option, as it’s the second largest city in Georgia. The problem is that it’s in the middle of nowhere, with Phoenix City, Alabama, being the only proper “city” of any size within an hour’s drive of Columbus. A nice zoo would definitely benefit the city, which currently doesn’t have one. (I suppose that Pine Mountain Safari counts as a “zoo”, but it’s about 45 minutes away from the city, and it has a “roadside” feeling to it).

I agree with the point about the Phoenix Zoo. Plus I think Vegas could stick with a desert themed zoo (if you stretch the definition a bit) and have some ABC species. Maybe make it open 24 hours.
 
There are no AZA zoos in New York State’ counties: Nassau (Population 1,400,000)Suffolk ( Population: 1,500,000) or Westchester (1,000,000)

What do you mean by Cambria? Do you mean Wales? Or do you mean the city in Alberta, California, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Wisconsin or Wyoming?

If the theory is to service the Central Coast, specifically San Luis Obispo County, I could see the reasoning. It probably wouldn't need to be a really big zoo as it isn't servicing a huge metro area. But it would be another thing to do in the region for families, like the Central Coast Aquarium is, so I'd in theory be in favor.

Lots of counties don't have zoos in them. That doesn't mean a zoo is far away. Most of Westchester County can be at the Bronx Zoo within 30 minutes. Sure traffic, can get bad, but that still won't put it outside an hour. Same thing with Nassau County. Bronx would likely take the farthest parts of that county under an hour with no traffic and an 1.5 hours with it. Nassau County also have the Queens Zoo even closer. Suffolk, I'll give you as it is a bit more out there and could benefit from a smaller zoo like most of the boroughs benefit from, but it wouldn't support anything on a large scale
