ZooParc de Beauval Zooparc de Beauval news 2024

This sounds interesting. Do you have more information on it?
It's a large panel with pictures of some emblematic threatened animal species from Vietnam, that are bred in captivity (i.e. no Saolas).
There's a nearly identical signage for a dozen years about Chinese wildlife, near Giant Pandas' enclosures ; and this Vietnamese-themed panel seems to complete the signage already present near the Great One-Horned Rhino enclosure about the threats to Asian wildlife (poaching, deforestation...) that's in place for around 10 years.

Births from late Summer in Beauval : 4 Xingu River Rays, 1 Crested Partridge, 12 Fulvous Whistling Ducks, 6 White-faced Whistling Ducks, 2 Ringed Teals, 2 Nicobar Pigeons, 1 Pink-necked Green Pigeon, 1 African Spoonbill, 4 Masked Lapwings, 2 Black-cheeked Lovebirds, 1 Barbary Macaque, 2 Patagonian Maras, 2 Capybaras, 1 Java Mouse-Deer, 1 Axis Deer, 1 Beisa Oryx.

As far as I know, only the Mossy Frogs are currently present in Beauval's collections.
Of course there are many other Vietnamese native species in Beauval, including some very threatened ones (Yellow-cheeked Gibbons, Douc Langurs...) but none is reported among the 9 flagship species of the Vietnamazing campaign.

Sadly the male Greater One-horned Rhino SAHIB has just passed away.

This is a great loss as the bull was only 20+ years old and a huge blow to the breeding program (with so few bulls and those proven around in Europe)!

NOTA BENE: Would be nice to have some more information surrounding his unexpected passing...

I received this information yesterday.
The crew was still waiting for the necropsy results.

I received this information yesterday.
The crew was still waiting for the necropsy results.
The death of SAHIB seems to have been very sudden, as he fell without any trial to stand up after, during the day. The keepers found him dead when they came around him.
The autopsy has revealed haematomas, probably caused by the fall itself, but no major wounds.

He left four offspring, including the young male GAINDA, recently transferred to Nürnberg Zoo in Germany.

Yesterday I was in Beauval, I have a couple of news to notice :
  • at least 2 joeys (if no more) are present in the Red Kangaroo mob ;
  • the Mata-mata Turtle has been transferred in the Lesser Antillean Iguana exhibit ;
  • in the bird show there weren't any Owls nor Condors, but I've spotted the two young Kookaburras and at least 2 Yellow-billed Storks (both are new species for this year), plus signage about a third new species (not seen) : the Black-faced Ibis ;
  • I attended the Sea Lion show and I've seen once again MAOUSI, that is one of the oldest Sea Lions of the Zoo (she's 28), she probably stayed for many years in the OAPs pool (that can be seen from above in the cable car among other backstage enclosures, but not directly) ;
  • finally I've seen a guest with a medium-sized dog near the Persian Leopard enclosure (technically he had the right to go in this part of the park with a dog ; I add that conversely the dogs are strictly forbidden in the Chinese zone, in the Wolf/Bear area and in all the exhibits with free-ranging animals), sparkling intimidation behaviour from the female Leopard, while the visitor didn't seem bothered. It ended without major issues but I felt some fear for the reaction of both animals (obviously the Leopard was behind heavy fences end thick glass panels, but the dog could feel panic behaviour).

Various births have been reported in the early Autumn in Beauval : 1 Crested Partridge, 1 Indian Peafowl, 1 Fulvous Whistling Duck, 6 Australian Wood Ducks, 1 Hadada Ibis, 2 African Spoonbills, 1 Cattle Egret, 1 Barbary Monkey plus 1 Koala joey, son or daughter of the female GENOA, remaining in the mother's pouch.

Additionally there's a new species in the Bird House : the White-cheeked Touraco, with some birds in free flight inside the house.

Some news reported by Antoine on Howtank forum/chat :
  • the South American Coatis are now in the "historical" enclosure of the Serval (above the White Tiger exhibits) ;
  • the former Mediterranean Tortoise exhibit has been demolished, as well as the nearby Pygmy Marmoset aviary.
I add that the Servals of the historical enclosure are 2 or 3 geriatric animals that have been displaced in backstage.

Beauval has ceased to display Blue Tree Monitors Varanus macraei, with the recent death of the last individual. This one has just been replaced by a Fijian Iguana, probably a Brachylophus bulabula.
(reported by Anthony on Howtank forum/chat)

2 new bird species are present in Beauval :
  • The Collared Trogon Trogon collaris, personally seen in the Sloth exhibit (Bird House) and confirmed by Antoine on Howtank forum/chat ;
  • The Great Horned Owl Bubo virginianus reported in the bird show and confirmed by Juliette on Howtank.

Some news from Beauval, reported by Antoine on Howtank forum/chat :
  • a new species is displayed in the Australian Greenhouse : the Swift Parrot Lathamus discolor. It is really a great piece of news as this species is CR in the wild. It has been present (and even breeding !) in Beauval for a couple of years, but remained in the backstage all this time.
  • the return of Fishing Cats is likely, as signage representing this species has been placed in front of their former enclosure (Beauval kept a pair of these cats for many years, but they passed away at an advanced age last winter ; their enclosure went occupied by birds of prey during most of 2024).
