Giant panda cub update:

From socials:

The panda twins have successfully survived their first five days!

Thanks to their mother, Meng Meng, and the great panda team, they are developing magnificently. Cuddling, drinking, and even more cuddling are the order of the day for the twins.

Every hour or so, the two cubs take turns drinking and cuddling with their mother. They are still completely helpless, but the care and their mother's milk give them the strength they need.
The baby Pandas are two girls.
Zoo Berlin on Instagram: " GIRLPOWER: Unsere beiden Panda-Jungtiere sind Weibchen. GIRL POWER: Our two panda cubs are female. The offspring are healthy and are now developing the characteristic coloration of pandas. ⬛⬜ The reason behind the black and white coloration of this endangered species has not yet been conclusively clarified scientifically. However, it is believed that it primarily serves as camouflage or for communication with conspecifics. As soon as the young animals are visible to zoo guests, we will, of course, let you know. Until then, we will keep you updated with all the latest news here. #panda #pandababy #pandabear #nachwuchs #zooberlin"

To celebrate world gorilla day the zoo has announced the donation page to raise funds for the new gorilla enclosure. The fundraiser gies by the name “a Villa for Tilla”. In case this hasn’t brought up yet, the website confirms that the enclosure will be built on the entire extension area (kangaroos, wild horses, South American animals, and African hoof stock I forgot the official name of the area). Personally I find this odd because I do remember from my visit in 2022 that the zoo was just working on some renovations in that area. So will that be all for nothing?

There are not yet any build project plans available. Certainly will be interesting how and where in the extension area they will site the indoor and outdoor habitats. I would hope they include other species from within the focal West African area ... in the set up.

I cannot imagine that that would sent off African hoof stock AND/OR create a natural African savannah area nearby. Remember: in the old zoo area they have quite a lot of African hoofstock close by the extension area (zebra, Hippotraginae, ... others).

Great to see another development plan on the cards. Although I’m looking forward to seeing some more concrete design plans for the new exhibit. The new footprint will make this one of the largest exhibits in the zoo and will also make the other existing great ape enclosures look small in comparison .

I would love to see an African Primate House on the Extension area.

The zoo - former Primate House - could than be partially refurbed for Asian and South American species. Just an speculative idea ... of mine.

@Kifaru Bwana: I share your thoughts. Using the old ape/monkey house for Asian and South American species would be a great idea.

However, it is still unlogical to me that the extension area will be used for gorillas/african monkeys instead of elephants. A new elephant exhibit is imo at least as necessary as a new gorilla exhibit. I know, there was and still is opposition of the Spanish embassy against an elephant exhibit right in front of their building (At least if been told so from a local). But their fierces of having to much "traffic" won't be over. Gorillas - specially in Berlin - draw also a lot of visitors...

I could understand the move as you say if other African primates or even a second ape species were to move over there too. Originally I think the gorillas and orangs were to make use of the converted elephant house. Keeping taxonomic groupings in similar areas. Perhaps the gorillas making way will allow more space for the species in the primate house. As mentioned before if orangs were to move to the tierpark also this may leave more room for the far corner of the zoo to expand the elephants in the future.

Is there any word where the species who will have to make way for the new gorilla area will go?

Prewalskis horse already at tierpark. Kangaroo and wallabies to move there also?

It’s great to see new developments in the pipeline but boy as a zoo geek it makes you think what’s next!

Just a brief remark: The visualization may be misleading, as it indeed seems to highlight the entire extension area. But I think this is just meant to give an idea, where the extension area actually is. The website also states they plan 12,000 square metres for the new gorilla complex. Altogether, the extension area has some 34,000 square metres. So there should be some space for additional species. They could indeed move bonobos or the like. But we will have to wait.

What I'm pretty sure about, though: I don't see them give up their orangs and let the Tierpark have them. They never did anything like that in the past and they will rather give up a number of "boring" species than loosing one of their highlight species.

Very fair points @markmeier! It would be nice to other species move too!

Yes I’d say deer, antelope and cattle species may well decrease in coming years to make way for further developments!

Just came back from an amazing zoo week over at Berlin and I have a few questions;
- ZTL says that both "Barbary" and Transvaal lions are housed at the zoo, does anyone know which is which?
- Any idea of what's going on on the water buffalo exhibit? It was under consturction and the buffaloes were nowhere to be seen.
- The chinese water deer have left the collection? When I reached their enclosure there was a sing saying that the exhibit was empty.
- The oncillas are no longer visible indoors in the carnivore house, right? I only saw their sign on one of the outdoors exhibits, but the oncillas were nowhere to be seen.

I saw the Water Buffalo during my visit at early September and the sign for the Chinese Water Deer was still there at the time too. I know there were no Japanese Sika Deer on my visit as construction was going on in their exhibit (I think) so I think they have left the collection but not sure.

Hello! I just joined :) I'm visiting some European countries in October and I wanted to ask if the Berlin Zoo is usually too busy on Saturdays? I can go either Saturday or Monday and I'd like to avoid large amounts of people and kids since I really want to appreciate the animals and even draw some of them. However on Monday I have less time since I'm leaving Berlin that day.
Thanks!
Ola Alexa,

Nice to have another Zoochatter from South America and especially Uruguay!

You bet that Mondays are definitely preferable over weekends if you want to avoid the crowds. Berlin Zoo is sprawled over close on 34ha and the parkland invites you to spend a full day there. So arrive early at opening at 9am (opening hours 9am-4:30pm)!

There is enough to see and enjoy at the zoo to allow yourself to spend more time in some parts that may more catch your interest. I would recommend the Bird House, Primate Building and new Carnivore House and the Aquarium (a real gem this last one).

Do a stopover at the Zoo restaurant at midday to have a taste and filling hot meal and allow yourself the time to enjoy the exhibits and how the animals go about their business.

ATM: obviously for you the twin giant pandas and the pygmy hippo calf in the Hipparium are a must see! Enjoy your day!

BTW: Tierpark Berlin in the Eastern part of Berlin is just as interesting and very much larger still ....! Plus they do maintain a breeding group of the very rare - at least in neighbouring Paraguay and northern Argentina - Gran Chaco peccaries. Zoo Berlin itself used to have a lot more South American species like marsh deer and the only Paraguay pampas deer in Europe (alas now long gone ...).
