African Building Advice

So I’m writing a comic taking place in the zoo, and want to plan out the buildings. Note that not all of these species may be consistent characters, I just want to get advice on the layout. Its heavily based on Lincoln Park Zoo’s African Journey, but with some differences. Should I get more diversity in certain taxa?

here’s the current species list
  • Aardvark
  • African penguin
  • Painted dogs (w/ yard access)
  • Sable antelope (w/ yard access)
  • Elephant
  • Secretarybird, maybe housed with a smaller bird on higher levels of exhibit?
  • Some sort of kingfisher maybe
  • Nile crocodile
  • Meerkats
  • Von der deckens hornbill (housed w/ meerkats)
  • Pygmy hippo

You can maybe do an ancient Egypt theme with some of those animals or a Southern Africa theme

Where is the zoo? It's the more important part
Roughly midwest/northeast US area? Its a sort of Springfield in The Simpsons situation where its just kind of in a vaguely temperate environment. Drawing inspo from Cinncinati Zoo, Lincoln Park Zoo, Brookfield Zoo, and St Louis Zoo

If you take the Ancient Egypt route, you can have
  • Aardvark (sometimes a symbol of Set)
  • An aviary with Egyptian Geese, Northern Bald Ibis and Sacred Ibis
  • Striped Hyenas (Also a symbol of Set)
  • Addax Antelope mixed with North African Ostrich, and Dorcas Gazelle
  • Hippopotamus
  • Pied Kingfisher aviary with Eurasian Hoopoe
  • Nile Crocodile
If you take the Southern Africa route, you can have
  • Cape Porcupine mixed with Bat-Eared Fox
  • African Penguin mixed with Cape Shelduck or White-Breasted Cormorant
  • Cape Painted Dog
  • Hartmann's Mountain Zebra mixed with Impala, Eland, and Greater Kudu
  • African Elephant
  • Secretary Bird
  • Malachite Kingfisher
  • Nile Crocodile
  • Meerkat
  • Southern Ground Hornbill

Pied Kingfisher aviary with Eurasian Hoopoe
I don’t think pied kingfishers are present in North American zoos. If this was meant to be realistic I’d steer away from this but if realism isn’t the goal than ignore me.

I just wanted to make the poster’s goal of having kingfishers. I can help with any other sections if needed.
